Day 9: Exploring Ancient Wonders and Black Sand Beaches: A Day in Santorini's Past and Present
Uncover Santorini's history at Ancient Thera, relax on Kamari Beach, and enjoy local flavors. A perfect blend of culture and leisure!
A Journey Through Time and Tide
Today was a delightful mix of history and relaxation, offering a glimpse into Santorini's ancient past and its vibrant present. I set out with my friends, ready to explore the island's historical sites and unwind on its famous black sand beaches. It was a day of contrasts, from the rugged ruins of Ancient Thera to the soothing shores of Kamari and Perissa.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Il Maestro. While the online reviews I quickly glanced at weren't stellar, especially regarding the pizza, it was conveniently located and offered a quick start to our day. I opted for a simple Greek yogurt with honey and nuts, a classic combination that never disappoints. It fuelled me up perfectly for the adventures ahead.
Stepping Back in Time at Ancient Thera
After breakfast, we drove up to Ancient Thera, perched high on Mesa Vouno mountain. The drive itself was an experience, with winding roads offering panoramic views of the island. The entrance fee was a reasonable €10, and the site was open from 08:30 to 15:30, giving us plenty of time to explore.
The climb up to the ancient city was a bit strenuous, but the views from the top were absolutely worth it. Standing there, surrounded by the ruins of a once-thriving city, I felt a deep connection to the past. It was fascinating to wander through the remnants of Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine civilizations, imagining what life must have been like here centuries ago.
History is not a burden on the memory but an illumination of the soul.
The site is named after the mythical ruler Theras. I tried to picture what it must have been like in its prime. The remnants of houses, an agora, and temple grounds told stories of a vibrant community. I made sure to take plenty of photos, trying to capture the essence of this ancient capital overlooking the Aegean Sea.

Beach Bliss at Kamari Beach
After immersing ourselves in history, it was time to relax and soak up the sun at Kamari Beach. The black volcanic sand was striking against the backdrop of the azure sea. The beach was bustling with activity, but still retained a relaxed vibe. We rented sun loungers and umbrellas for a small fee and settled in for a few hours of pure relaxation.
The water was a bit chilly, but I couldn't resist taking a dip. The contrast between the warm sun and the cool water was incredibly refreshing. I even tried my hand at windsurfing, though I must admit I spent more time in the water than on the board. My friends laughed, but it was all part of the fun.

Kamari Beach has a reputation for being family-friendly, and I could see why. The atmosphere was welcoming, and there were plenty of activities to keep everyone entertained. I noticed several tavernas and restaurants lining the shore, offering a variety of cuisines. This beach is Santorini's most famous, with a two-kilometre sweep of dark volcanic sand and pebbles. I also learned that Kamari Beach is home to the Santorini Jazz Festival each July, which takes place at the open-air cinema.
Lunch with a View at Triana Tavern
For lunch, we headed to Triana Tavern in Perissa. This was a recommendation from a local we met earlier in the trip, and it didn't disappoint. The tavern had a charming, rustic ambiance, and the staff were incredibly friendly. We ordered a selection of traditional Greek dishes to share, including moussaka, souvlaki, and saganaki. Each dish was bursting with flavor, and the portions were generous.
The prices were very reasonable, especially considering the quality of the food and the stunning sea views. I particularly enjoyed the saganaki, a fried cheese dish that was crispy on the outside and gooey on the inside. It was the perfect complement to the chilled glass of local white wine I ordered.

Exploring Perissa
After lunch, we took a stroll along Perissa's black sand beach. It was a bit quieter than Kamari, offering a more peaceful atmosphere. I noticed several beach bars and cafes, each with its own unique charm. The black sand was hot underfoot, but the sea breeze kept us cool.
Perissa has a more laid-back vibe compared to Kamari, and it's known for its water sports. The village is dotted with traditional whitewashed houses boasting jewel-bright blue-domed roofs. As we strolled through the area, we passed the beautiful Timiou Stavrou church, featuring the iconic blue domes Santorini is famous for.

Dinner at Avocado: A Culinary Delight
As the sun began to set, we made our way to Imerovigli for dinner at Avocado Restaurant. This restaurant had been highly recommended for its creative menu and stunning caldera views. Thankfully I had made a reservation as the restaurant was quite busy.
Avocado is located at one of the highest points on the Caldera. The restaurant embraces local producers and their organic garden-fresh ingredients.
The location was perfect, offering panoramic views of the caldera as the sky transformed into a canvas of vibrant colors. The food was exceptional, a modern twist on traditional Greek cuisine. I opted for the grilled sea bass, which was cooked to perfection and served with a side of roasted vegetables.
My friends tried the shrimp pasta and the grilled octopus. For dessert, we shared a decadent chocolate soufflé that was the perfect ending to a perfect meal. The staff were attentive and friendly, making our dining experience even more enjoyable.

Jazzing it Up at Kira Thira Jazz Bar
To cap off the evening, we decided to check out Kira Thira Jazz Bar in Fira. This bar had been recommended for its live music and cozy atmosphere. It turned out to be the oldest bar in Fira.
The bar was a bit hidden away, but well worth the search. The interior was dimly lit, creating a relaxed and intimate ambiance. A live jazz band was playing, filling the space with soulful melodies. We ordered a round of cocktails and settled in to enjoy the music.
The bartender was skilled, crafting each drink with precision and care. The sangria was a particular highlight, a refreshing blend of local wine and fresh fruit. The atmosphere was lively, but not overly crowded, making it the perfect place to unwind after a long day of exploring.

As we sat there, listening to the music and sipping our drinks, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experiences of the day. Santorini had once again exceeded my expectations, offering a perfect blend of history, relaxation, and culinary delights.
Looking Ahead
Tomorrow, we're planning to explore Megalochori, the Venetian Castle of Emporio, and Panagia Episkopi. I'm also hoping to do a bit of shopping at Spicy Boutique/The Lace. It promises to be another day filled with adventure and discovery.
I am so glad Pieter encouraged me to take this trip with my friends. It is so important to make time for myself, and for the things I enjoy, even when I am busy with work and family. It is also important to remember that adventure can be found even in the most familiar of places. Sometimes, all it takes is a change of perspective to see the world in a new light.
Until tomorrow!
