A Journey Through Time in Santorini's Heart

Today was a day of venturing off the beaten path, leaving the caldera's edge behind to explore the heart of Santorini. I was eager to discover the villages that hold the island's secrets, the places where time seems to slow down, and the traditions live on. It was a day of architectural marvels, culinary delights, and a deeper connection with the soul of Santorini.

Our first stop was Megalochori, a village that whispers tales of a bygone era. As we drove through the countryside, the landscape transformed from the dramatic caldera views to rolling vineyards, a testament to Santorini's rich winemaking heritage. I couldn't help but think of Pieter and Alessia back home in Haarlem, and how they would have loved to explore these charming streets with me.

Megalochori welcomed us with its tranquil atmosphere and traditional Cycladic architecture.

The village dates back to the 17th century, and its cobblestone streets, sun-bleached walls, and domed churches exude a timeless charm. I wandered through the narrow alleys, admiring the neoclassical mansions with their walled courtyards adorned with vibrant flowers. The iconic bell tower in the village square was a sight to behold, its whitewashed arches framing the beauty of Megalochori. It felt like stepping into a postcard, a perfect snapshot of traditional Santorini.

We paused at Xeporto for breakfast, a quaint spot where we savored local delicacies. The restaurant was a delight, and I enjoyed the chance to try some authentic Greek dishes, fueling up for the day's adventures. I made a mental note to try to recreate some of these flavors back in Haarlem, perhaps adding a Dutch twist to surprise Pieter and Alessia.

The beauty of Santorini lies not only in its iconic views but also in the hidden corners where history and tradition intertwine.

After breakfast, we continued our exploration, stumbling upon the Spicy Boutique/The Lace, a charming shop offering Greek-designed women's clothing and accessories. Though shopping wasn't high on my list today, I couldn't resist browsing through the collection, admiring the craftsmanship and unique designs. I imagined Alessia twirling in one of the beautiful dresses, her eyes sparkling with joy.

Next on our itinerary was the Venetian Castle of Emporio, a medieval fortress that once protected the island's inhabitants from pirate invasions.

As we approached Emporio, the landscape shifted again, revealing a village steeped in history. The castle, built in the 15th century, is a labyrinth of narrow streets, houses connected by bridges, and hidden corners. It felt like stepping back in time, imagining the lives of those who sought refuge within its walls.

The architecture was fascinating, a blend of Venetian and Cycladic styles, with tiny windows, archways, and secret steps adding to the castle's charm. We explored the churches within the castle, including the 16th-century Church of Panagia Mesiani, a testament to the island's religious heritage. The castle was one of five on Santorini, and it was built to protect the town's inhabitants during frequent pirate raids. I could envision the Venetians protecting settlements across Santorini, with Emporio acting as an important strategic point.

Lunch was at Theoni’s Restaurant, a delightful spot where we enjoyed traditional Greek cuisine.

The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. I savored the flavors of Santorini, appreciating the fresh, local ingredients and the simple yet satisfying dishes. It was a perfect break before continuing our journey.

Our final stop for the day was Panagia Episkopi, the oldest Byzantine church on the island. The church dates back to the 11th century and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It has survived many invasions, fires, and earthquakes, a testament to its resilience and the faith of the people who have worshipped there for centuries.

The church's architecture was unique, a beige-whitewashed cross-domed structure with a red-tiled dome. Inside, we admired the frescoes and icons, remnants of a rich religious history. The church has five entrances and was constructed on the site of a three-nave Christian basilica. I learned that the church was the seat of the Orthodox Diocese of Santorini until 1207 and from 1537 to 1827.

As the day drew to a close, we headed to Feredini for dinner, eager to experience the restaurant's culinary offerings. The panoramic views of the Aegean Sea were breathtaking, and the traditional Cycladic architecture added to the restaurant's charm. The food was exquisite, a perfect blend of traditional and modern flavors. It was a fitting end to a day of exploration, a celebration of Santorini's beauty and culinary heritage.

Tomorrow, I'm planning to hike the Fira to Oia trail, a scenic route that promises stunning views of the caldera. I'm also excited about the sunset cruise, a chance to witness Santorini's famous sunsets from a different perspective. And of course, I'm looking forward to trying the local wines at Rocka wine sunset bar, a perfect way to end the day. I’m glad I packed my camera, comfortable shoes, and lightweight clothing for this trip! I’m missing my adapter and swimwear though, so I’ll make sure I get those soon.

Today was a reminder that Santorini is more than just its iconic caldera views. It's a place of hidden gems, where history, culture, and natural beauty converge to create an unforgettable experience. As I reflect on the day's adventures, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore this enchanting island and share its secrets with you all.
