Exploring the Enchanting Island of Santorini with Friends
Day 12: Scaling Santorini: From the Old Harbor to Fira's Heights
Join me as I explore Santorini's Old Harbor, ride the cable car, brave the Karavolades Stairs, and savor local flavors with friends.
Ascending to New Heights in Santorini
Today was a day of ascents, both literal and metaphorical, as I explored the captivating journey from Santorini's Old Harbor to the vibrant town of Fira. The island unfolded before me, offering a blend of history, stunning views, and, of course, delightful culinary experiences. I was excited to see what the day would bring, especially with my friends by my side.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Cosi Italian Restaurant. It felt a little strange to have Italian food in Greece, but the aroma of freshly baked pizza and the promise of strong coffee were too enticing to resist. The restaurant was cozy, and it reminded me of home in Matera, where good food and warm hospitality are always on the menu. We shared a few laughs over breakfast, fueling up for the day's adventures.
After breakfast, we headed to the Santorini Old Harbor, a place teeming with history and activity. It was fascinating to learn that this harbor was formed by volcanic activity way back in 1650 BC! The harbor used to be Santorini's main port until Athinios Port was built. Now, it's a hub for cruise ship travelers and smaller boats that take tourists to the volcano and hot springs. The waterfront was bustling with shops, restaurants and taverns. The energy was infectious, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement as we prepared for our next adventure.
The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, or in this case, a cable car ride and a climb up hundreds of stairs!
To get to Fira, we had a choice: brave the Karavolades Stairs or take the Cable Car of Santorini. The ascent was swift, and the views were simply breathtaking. As we glided upwards, the Aegean Sea sparkled below, and the iconic whitewashed buildings of Santorini dotted the landscape. It was a moment of pure magic, and I couldn't help but snap a few photos to capture the beauty.

Once at the top, we decided to tackle a portion of the Karavolades Stairs on our descent. I knew about the 580 steps that wind up the mountain, and I was curious to experience a bit of this historic route. As we started down, we quickly realized why the cable car is such a popular option! The steps were steep, and sharing the path with donkeys added an extra layer of challenge. However, the views were incredible, and the sense of accomplishment with each step was undeniable. It was a reminder of the traditional ways of navigating this island, and I felt a connection to Santorini's past.
After our brief stair adventure, lunch was calling. We settled in at Esperisma Bar-Restaurant, perched atop the cliffs of Fira. This restaurant offered a culinary journey through the flavors of Santorini, with fresh seafood, local vegetables, and fragrant herbs. The blend of traditional recipes with modern creativity was a delight, and the views of the caldera were simply unparalleled. Sipping on local wine while enjoying the sunset views made for a perfect afternoon.

In the late afternoon, I popped into Kisira Concept Store, a charming shop that caught my eye. I love supporting local businesses, and this store was filled with unique finds. I picked up a few small gifts for Alessia and Pieter, little reminders of our adventure in Santorini. It's always special to bring back something that reflects the local culture and craftsmanship.

As the day wound down, we made our way to Santorini Mou for dinner. This family-run tavern, located in Finikia, promised an authentic Greek dining experience. The setting was rustic and inviting, with options for indoor and outdoor dining. We chose a table on the terrace, where we could enjoy the sunset views. The food was delicious, and the live music added to the festive atmosphere. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with exploration and discovery. Apparently this place is a favorite haunt of celebrities, which I found amusing.

Tomorrow, we're planning to explore Monolithos, experience Santorini Horse Riding, and capture the beauty of the Picturesque Blue Dome Santorini. I'm particularly excited about the horse riding, as I've heard it's a fantastic way to see the island from a different perspective. And, of course, I'm eager to find that perfect blue dome for some postcard-worthy photos. We might even check out Lux Bar Santorini for a nightcap.
Today was more than just a checklist of attractions; it was an immersive experience that touched my heart. From the historical depths of the Old Harbor to the culinary heights of Fira, Santorini revealed its beauty in layers. And sharing it all with friends made it even more special. I am so grateful for these experiences and look forward to what tomorrow brings!
It's moments like these that remind me why I love to travel, to explore, and to share my experiences with all of you. Until tomorrow, keep exploring and creating your own adventures!
