Today was a day of contrasts, a blend of bustling present and profound past. It was a day filled with unexpected discoveries, delicious flavors, and the humbling realization of how much history these ancient stones hold.

My day began in Aguas Calientes, the town nestled at the foot of Machu Picchu. After a restful night, I was eager to start exploring. The air was crisp and cool, a refreshing change from the warmer temperatures I'm used to in Haarlem. I decided to treat myself to breakfast at El Balcón Machupicchu. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and I was excited to try some local cuisine. I settled into a seat with a view of the bustling streets below. The menu was filled with traditional Peruvian breakfast options, and I finally decided on some scrambled eggs with tomatoes and onions, served with a side of fresh bread and a strong cup of Peruvian coffee.

As I sipped my coffee, I watched the town come to life. Locals and tourists alike were making their way through the streets, preparing for another day of exploring Machu Picchu and its surroundings. The energy was palpable, a mix of excitement and anticipation. I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to be here, experiencing this unique corner of the world.
After breakfast, I set out to explore Aguas Calientes a bit more. I wandered through the local market, a vibrant hub of activity. Stalls overflowed with colorful textiles, handcrafted souvenirs, and fresh produce. The air was filled with the sounds of vendors calling out their wares and the chatter of shoppers bargaining for the best prices. I picked up a few small trinkets for Alessia, knowing she'd love the bright colors and unique designs.
Next on my list was Winay Wayna, an Inca site along the Inca Trail. The name translates to “Forever Young” in Quechua, and the site certainly lived up to its name. To get there, I decided to hike a portion of the Inca Trail. The trail wound its way through lush cloud forests, with stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The hike was challenging, but the scenery was more than worth the effort. The air was thick with the scent of damp earth and exotic flowers. The trail itself was a testament to the Incas' engineering prowess, with perfectly fitted stones and impressive stonework.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found not in grand monuments, but in the quiet whispers of ancient stones and the gentle rustling of leaves in a forgotten ruin.
As I hiked, I couldn't help but reflect on the history of this place. Winay Wayna was built in the 15th century, during the height of the Inca Empire. It served as a vital rest stop for travelers on their way to Machu Picchu, a place for them to replenish their energy and prepare for the final leg of their journey. The site includes agricultural terraces, living quarters, and ceremonial fountains, showcasing the Incas' advanced knowledge of agriculture and water management. It's believed that Wiñay Wayna was a spiritual destination where Inca royalty could rest before reaching Machu Picchu.
Finally, I arrived at Winay Wayna. The site was even more impressive than I had imagined. The ruins were perched on a steep hillside, overlooking the Urubamba River. The agricultural terraces cascaded down the mountainside, a testament to the Incas' ingenuity in transforming the rugged terrain into fertile land. I spent hours exploring the site, wandering through the ancient buildings and imagining what life must have been like here centuries ago. The panoramic views of the surrounding valley and mountains were simply breathtaking.
The energy of the place was palpable. I could almost feel the presence of the Incas who once lived and worked here. It was a humbling experience, a reminder of the rich history and culture of this land. The stonework was incredible, and the way the buildings were integrated into the landscape was truly remarkable. As a translator, I often work with historical texts, but being here, surrounded by these ancient ruins, brought history to life in a way that words simply couldn't capture.
After exploring Winay Wayna, I made my way back to Aguas Calientes, feeling a deep sense of satisfaction. I was ready for a hearty lunch. I decided to try Govinda Restaurant VEGANO, a local vegan spot that had caught my eye earlier. I was pleasantly surprised by the variety of options on the menu. I opted for the vegan paella, a flavorful dish made with quinoa, vegetables, and a blend of Peruvian spices. It was absolutely delicious, and I savored every bite.

The restaurant had a calming green interior, and the staff were incredibly friendly. It was a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of the town. I learned that Govinda offers a fusion of Peruvian and Indian cuisine, and they use primarily organic ingredients. It's always a pleasure to find a place that aligns with my values of sustainable living and healthy eating. I made a mental note to try their dahl soup next time.
With a full stomach and a renewed sense of energy, I decided to spend the afternoon exploring more of Aguas Calientes. I visited the local hot springs, known as Baños Termales. The springs are located just outside of town and are accessible via a short walk or a shuttle bus. The water was warm and soothing, and I spent a blissful hour soaking in the mineral-rich waters. It was the perfect way to relax my muscles after the day's hike.
I also wandered through the town's public art installations, admiring the colorful murals and sculptures that adorned the streets. Aguas Calientes has a vibrant artistic scene, and it was inspiring to see how the local artists were using their talents to celebrate their culture and history. One installation that particularly caught my eye was a series of mosaics depicting scenes from Inca mythology. The intricate details and vibrant colors were truly captivating.
As evening approached, I started thinking about dinner. I had heard good things about Restaurante Tupana Wasi, a local spot known for its traditional Peruvian cuisine. I made a reservation and arrived just as the sun was setting. The restaurant had a warm and inviting atmosphere, with wooden tables and colorful textiles adorning the walls. I ordered the aji de gallina, a classic Peruvian dish made with shredded chicken in a creamy sauce, served with rice and potatoes. It was rich, flavorful, and incredibly satisfying.

During dinner, I reflected on the day's adventures. From the bustling streets of Aguas Calientes to the serene ruins of Winay Wayna, it had been a day of contrasts and discoveries. I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience this incredible place and to learn more about the rich history and culture of Peru. As I savored the last bites of my meal, I couldn't help but feel excited about what tomorrow would bring. Tomorrow, I plan to visit Humantay Lake and Perolniyoc Waterfall. I also hope to visit the Aguas Calientes Market.
After dinner, I decided to check out Green PUB machupicchu, a local bar known for its lively atmosphere. I enjoyed a Pisco Sour, the national drink of Peru, while listening to live music and chatting with fellow travelers. It was a fun and festive way to end the day.

Back at my accommodation, I opened my travel journal and began to write down my thoughts and experiences. As I reflected on the day, I realized that I had learned so much about the Inca civilization, the local culture, and myself. Solo travel has a way of pushing you outside of your comfort zone and forcing you to confront your fears and insecurities. It's not always easy, but it's always rewarding. I am so grateful for this time to reflect and recharge, something that can be difficult to find in the midst of my busy life as a translator and a mother.
Before drifting off to sleep, I sent a quick message to Pieter and Alessia, letting them know that I was safe and sound. I knew they were eager to hear about my adventures, and I couldn't wait to share all of my stories with them when I returned home. As I closed my eyes, I felt a sense of peace and contentment. Today had been a truly remarkable day, one that I would cherish for years to come.
Tomorrow promises new adventures, and I can't wait to see what awaits me. Goodnight from Aguas Calientes!
