Day 6: Chasing Waterfalls and Turquoise Dreams: A Day of Andean Wonders
Embark on a breathtaking journey to Humantay Lake and Perolniyoc Waterfall, immersing yourself in Peru's natural beauty and ancient history.
Andean Awakening: Lakes, Falls, and Ancient Echoes
Today was a day of breathtaking contrasts, from the serene turquoise waters of a glacial lake to the cascading heights of a hidden waterfall. It was a day that tested my lungs, rewarded my eyes, and left me feeling deeply connected to the ancient spirit of the Andes. I’m still catching my breath, both literally and figuratively, as I recount the day's adventures.
My day began before the sun dared to peek over the horizon. A hearty breakfast at Inti House fueled me up for the adventures ahead. The restaurant was cozy, and the promise of traditional Peruvian flavors was too tempting to resist. I opted for something simple yet satisfying – a quinoa soup, a local staple, paired with freshly baked bread. It was the perfect start to a day that demanded both energy and warmth.
The journey to Humantay Lake was an experience in itself. The drive wound through picturesque valleys, the landscape transforming with every turn. As we ascended, the air grew noticeably cooler, a crisp reminder of the altitude that awaited us. I was thankful I had packed layers, remembering Pieter's advice to always be prepared for unpredictable mountain weather. I even regretted not packing insect repellent and a portable phone charger! It would have been useful.
The hike to Humantay Lake was, without exaggeration, challenging. The altitude hit me hard, and I found myself pausing frequently to catch my breath. Each step was a conscious effort, my lungs burning with the thin air. I remembered reading about altitude sickness and the importance of acclimatization. Spending a few days in Cusco beforehand definitely helped, but nothing fully prepares you for the climb itself. I saw fellow hikers chewing on coca leaves, a local remedy for altitude sickness, and I considered trying it myself. But the sheer beauty of the surroundings spurred me on, the promise of the turquoise lake a beacon in the distance.
Sometimes, the most challenging journeys lead to the most unforgettable destinations.
And then, there it was. Humantay Lake. A shimmering expanse of turquoise, nestled beneath the imposing Humantay glacier. The sight was simply mesmerizing, a reward that transcended the physical exertion. The color was unreal, a vibrant hue that seemed to glow from within. I spent a long time simply gazing at the lake, absorbing its beauty, and feeling a sense of profound peace. The crisp mountain air, the silence broken only by the gentle lapping of water against the shore, it was a moment of pure serenity.

I learned that the turquoise color of Humantay Lake is due to the glacial meltwater, which carries finely ground minerals that reflect sunlight in a unique way. The lake is considered sacred by the local people, and it's easy to understand why. It feels like a place where the earth touches the sky, a place where the veil between the physical and spiritual worlds is thin.
After descending from Humantay Lake, my next destination was Perolniyoc Waterfall. The journey took me through more of the Sacred Valley's stunning landscapes, eventually arriving at the trailhead in the Socma community. This hike was different, a descent into a lush canyon, following the course of a lively stream.
The trail to Perolniyoc was a welcome change from the stark, rocky terrain of Humantay. Here, the air was thick with the scent of vegetation, and the sound of rushing water filled the air. The path meandered through agricultural terraces, a testament to the ingenuity of the ancient Incas. It was fascinating to see how these terraces are still in use today, providing sustenance for the local communities.
As I approached the waterfall, the sound grew louder, a crescendo of nature's symphony. And then, I saw it. Perolniyoc Waterfall cascaded down a sheer rock face, a torrent of water plunging into a pool below. The spray created a fine mist that kissed my face, a refreshing contrast to the warmth of the afternoon sun.

But Perolniyoc is more than just a waterfall. At the top of the falls lies the Raqaypata archaeological site, an ancient Inca complex perched dramatically on the cliff's edge. Climbing to the site was another challenge, but the views from the top were simply breathtaking. I could see the entire valley stretching out before me, a tapestry of green fields and distant mountains. It was a powerful reminder of the rich history and cultural heritage of this region.
After a day of hiking, I was more than ready for a good meal. I headed to Mapacho Craft Beer Restaurant for lunch, enticed by its riverside location and the promise of local craft beer. I settled into a table overlooking the water and ordered their trout ceviche. The fish was incredibly fresh, and the flavors were vibrant and zesty. It was the perfect way to refuel after a day of adventure.

For dinner, I chose Restaurante AYASQA - Comida tradicional, eager to experience more authentic Peruvian cuisine. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and the menu was filled with traditional dishes. I opted for a hearty stew, rich with local vegetables and tender meat. It was a comforting end to a day filled with both physical exertion and awe-inspiring beauty.

Before heading back to my accommodation, I took a stroll through the Aguas Calientes Market. The market was a vibrant explosion of colors and sounds, filled with vendors selling everything from alpaca textiles to silver jewelry. I picked up a few souvenirs, small reminders of my time in Machu Picchu, and practiced my haggling skills, remembering the tips I had read in my travel guide.

As I reflect on today, I am filled with a sense of gratitude. Gratitude for the opportunity to witness such incredible natural beauty, gratitude for the resilience and ingenuity of the Inca people, and gratitude for the chance to challenge myself and discover new depths within myself. Tomorrow, I plan to explore Choquesuysuy and Mandor, continuing my exploration of the wonders surrounding Machu Picchu. I might even treat myself to a drink at Modo Restobar in the evening, a well-deserved reward after another day of adventure. For now, though, I'm content to rest, recharge, and dream of turquoise lakes and cascading waterfalls. I am also looking forward to having breakfast at Laurita Wasi Machu Picchu, lunch at Toto's House and dinner at Restaurante Chicha Grill Cuisine.
This trip has already given me so much, and I know there is still so much more to discover. I feel so alive and inspired. I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings.
I'm also making sure to take it easy tonight to avoid altitude sickness, as I learned that it's important to stay hydrated and avoid alcohol.
In terms of local events, I learned that May is a busy month in Cusco, with celebrations like the Feast of the Cross and the Lord of Torrechayoc festival. I'm hoping to catch a glimpse of some of these festivities during my stay. I am also very keen to attend Inti Raymi Festival or the Qoyllur Rit'i festival.
