A Fond Farewell to the Blue Pearl

As my final day in Chefchaouen drew to a close, a bittersweet feeling washed over me. This enchanting blue city had captured my heart in ways I hadn't anticipated. It felt like stepping into a dream, where every corner revealed a new shade of azure and every cobblestone whispered tales of a rich history. Now, as I prepare to leave, I want to share the experiences that made my last day in Chefchaouen so memorable.

The morning began, as most of my mornings here did, with a delightful breakfast at Hôtel restaurant La fuente. It's become my favorite spot, and I couldn't resist starting my last day with their traditional Moroccan breakfast. Sipping on sweet mint tea and savoring the local flavors, I watched as the city slowly came to life. The gentle sounds of the medina stirring awake were the perfect backdrop to my reflective mood. I savored the moment, knowing I would soon be trading this tranquil scene for the hustle and bustle of Amsterdam. I made sure to try the local breakfast composed of goat cheese, eggs and olive oil.

With a full stomach and a heart full of anticipation, I set out to explore the last few attractions on my list. First on the agenda was the Hero Eagle, a site that promised panoramic views of Chefchaouen and the surrounding Rif Mountains. The walk there was a journey in itself, navigating the narrow, winding streets, each painted in a different hue of blue. I paused frequently, camera in hand, trying to capture the essence of this unique city. Every doorway, every archway, seemed like a painting waiting to be captured.

Reaching the Hero Eagle, I was immediately struck by the breathtaking vista. The entire city stretched out before me, a sea of blue nestled against the rugged mountains. I spent a good hour there, simply soaking in the view, taking photos, and etching the scene into my memory. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of pine from the nearby forests. It was a moment of pure serenity, a perfect encapsulation of my time in Chefchaouen.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the simplest of moments, like watching the sun set over a blue city.

Next, I made my way to Bab El Hammar, one of the ancient gates of the city. This gate, steeped in history, served as a poignant reminder of Chefchaouen's past. As I walked under its archway, I imagined the countless travelers who had passed through this very spot over the centuries. It was a humbling experience, connecting me to the long and storied history of this place. I took a moment to appreciate the intricate brickwork and the imposing structure, a testament to the city's enduring spirit.

For lunch, I decided to try Restaurant populaire, a local eatery known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine. I ordered a tagine, a dish I had come to love during my stay. The rich, flavorful stew, cooked in a traditional clay pot, was a culinary delight. As I ate, I watched the locals going about their day, their faces etched with character and warmth. It was a reminder that beyond the tourist attractions, Chefchaouen was a living, breathing city with a vibrant community.

In the late afternoon, I found myself drawn to Restaurant Bar Chaouen. I don't usually spend time in bars, but I thought it would be interesting to experience the local nightlife. The bar was lively, filled with a mix of locals and tourists, all enjoying the laid-back atmosphere. I ordered a Moroccan mint tea and sat back, observing the scene. It was a far cry from the Italian aperitivo I was used to enjoying back home, but it had its own unique charm. It was a great place to watch a football game or socialize with friends.

As evening approached, I chose Restaurant Jbaria for my final dinner in Chefchaouen. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with traditional Moroccan décor. I ordered couscous, another local specialty, and savored every bite. The flavors were complex and satisfying, a perfect ending to my culinary journey in Chefchaouen. The staff was friendly and welcoming, making me feel like a cherished guest.

After dinner, I took one last stroll through the medina. The city was bathed in the soft glow of streetlights, casting long shadows that danced along the blue walls. The air was cool and crisp, carrying the scent of spices and woodsmoke. I paused at Plaza Uta el-Hammam, the main square, and watched as people gathered, chatting and laughing. It was a scene of simple joy, a perfect snapshot of life in Chefchaouen.

Before heading back to Dar Nokhba Inn, I stopped by a local shop to pick up a few souvenirs. I wanted to bring back something that would remind me of this magical place. I chose a small, hand-painted ceramic tagine and a colorful woven scarf, each a tangible reminder of my time here.

Back at the Inn, I packed my bags,整理我的東西, and reflected on my week in Chefchaouen. It had been a journey of discovery, a chance to immerse myself in a different culture and connect with a place that felt both ancient and timeless. As I drifted off to sleep, I knew that Chefchaouen would forever hold a special place in my heart.

I'm already thinking about my next adventure. Pieter and Alessia will be happy to see me, and I'm excited to share my stories with them. Perhaps we'll plan a trip together soon. Alessia would love the blue streets, I am sure. I should probably remember to buy sunscreen and a portable phone charger. Those would have been useful!

Tomorrow, I will travel from Chefchaouen to Tangier, and then fly from Tangier to Amsterdam. I'll be back in Haarlem before I know it, ready to share my experiences with Pieter and Alessia. While I am excited to return home, a part of me will always remain in this blue city, wandering its winding streets and soaking in its serene beauty. Until next time, Chefchaouen, goodbye.

As I close this chapter of my Moroccan adventure, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences, the people I met, and the beauty I witnessed. Chefchaouen, with its blue walls and welcoming spirit, has left an indelible mark on my soul. It's a place I know I will return to someday, to wander its streets once more and relive the magic of this enchanting city. For now, though, it's time to say goodbye and carry the memories with me, a reminder of the beauty and wonder that exists in the world.

My solo trip to Chefchaouen was more than just a vacation; it was a personal journey of reflection and discovery. It allowed me to step outside my comfort zone, embrace the unknown, and connect with a place on a deeper level. As a freelance translator, I often find myself immersed in words and stories, but this trip allowed me to experience a story firsthand, to become a part of the narrative of Chefchaouen.

And so, with a grateful heart and a camera full of memories, I bid farewell to Chefchaouen, the blue pearl of Morocco. Until we meet again.
