A Day of Peaks and Treasures

Today was all about embracing the adventurous spirit that Chefchaouen ignites within you. From conquering mountain peaks to savoring local cuisine and discovering hidden artisan treasures, it was a day of unforgettable experiences. I’m so excited to share all the details!

My day began with a delightful breakfast at Chez Aziz. I was looking forward to trying their traditional Moroccan breakfast, and it did not disappoint! The staff were incredibly welcoming, and the rooftop terrace offered a stunning view of the blue city awakening. I enjoyed a spread of fresh bread, olives, cheese, and mint tea, fueling up for the day’s main adventure: hiking Jebel El-Kelaa. The positive reviews I had read about Chez Aziz were spot on. I even overheard another guest mentioning how much they loved the location, just a short walk from the old town. It’s the little things like this that really make a stay memorable.

The trek to Jebel El-Kelaa Summit was definitely the highlight of the day. As I started my ascent, leaving the blue hues of Chefchaouen behind, I was immediately immersed in the rugged beauty of the Rif Mountains. The trail started with a gentle incline, gradually becoming steeper as I climbed higher. The paths were well-marked, thankfully, though I was glad I'd worn my comfortable walking shoes; I definitely recommend proper hiking boots, especially for the steeper sections.

The views along the way were simply breathtaking. The crisp January air filled my lungs as I navigated the winding paths, surrounded by diverse local vegetation. I even encountered a few friendly locals along the way, their warm smiles adding to the charm of the experience. Though I was hiking solo, I never felt alone; the mountain had a way of connecting me with nature and the people who call this place home.

The world reveals itself to those who travel on foot.

The final ascent to the summit was challenging, but the panoramic views from the top were more than worth the effort. From 1616 meters high, I could see the entirety of Chefchaouen spread out below, a mesmerizing tapestry of blue against the backdrop of the Rif Mountains. I took some time to capture the unforgettable views with my camera, wanting to hold onto this moment forever.

The descent offered fresh perspectives of the region, following a different path that wound its way back down the mountain. The tranquility of the mountains was palpable, a welcome escape from the bustling medina below. By the time I reached the bottom, my legs were tired, but my spirit was soaring.

Back in Chefchaouen, my stomach was rumbling, so I headed to The Magic Lamp House of Aladin for lunch. The restaurant's name alone was enough to draw me in, and the Moroccan cuisine certainly didn’t disappoint. I opted for the tajine, a traditional dish that was bursting with flavor. The well-trained staff made the experience even more enjoyable, and the exotic ambiance of the restaurant added to its charm. It was easy to see why The Magic Lamp House of Aladin receives such high ratings; the food and service were both spectacular.

After lunch, I decided to explore the local artisan scene and paid a visit to a Chefchaouen copper and lamps shop. The shop was a treasure trove of handcrafted copper items, from intricately designed lamps to exquisite decorative pieces. I was mesmerized by the artistry and skill that went into each piece, and I couldn’t resist purchasing a small copper lamp as a memento of my time in Chefchaouen. I had read that the cooking class meeting point was at a similar shop, and I could see why; these places are a true reflection of the city's artistic soul.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Restaurant Bab Kasaba for dinner. Located in the main square, the restaurant offered a delightful dining experience with its picturesque surroundings and delectable Moroccan cuisine. I chose a table on the rooftop terrace, where I could enjoy panoramic views of the city as I savored my meal. The menu was extensive, catering to diverse tastes, and the innovative dishes were a testament to the chef’s creativity. The stunning food presentation and amazing flavors made for a truly luxurious dining experience. The staff were friendly, adding to the warm and inviting atmosphere of the restaurant. It was the perfect way to end a day of adventure and discovery.

Reflecting on the day, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore Chefchaouen and immerse myself in its vibrant culture. The hike to Jebel El-Kelaa was a physical challenge, but it was also a spiritual journey, connecting me with nature and the beauty of the Rif Mountains. The delicious Moroccan cuisine, the charming artisan shops, and the friendly locals all contributed to an unforgettable experience.

Tomorrow marks the final day of my solo adventure in Chefchaouen. I plan to visit Hero Eagle and Bab El Hammar, soaking in the last moments of this magical blue city. I’ll also be having breakfast at Hôtel restaurant La fuente, lunch at Restaurant populaire, and a farewell dinner at Restaurant Jbaria. And of course, I’ll be sure to stop by Restaurant Bar Chaouen for a final taste of Moroccan nightlife. While I’m excited to return home to Pieter and Alessia, a part of me will always remain in Chefchaouen, amidst its blue alleys and stunning mountain landscapes.

Chefchaouen has a way of captivating your heart and leaving you with memories that will last a lifetime. I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings, as I bid farewell to this enchanting blue gem.
