A Day Among Giants

Today was a day of conquering literal and metaphorical mountains here in Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park. From navigating challenging terrains to indulging in the local cuisine, every moment was filled with awe and satisfaction. As the sun sets, casting long shadows over the peaks, I find myself reflecting on the incredible journey we undertook. Let me tell you all about it.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurante La Pradera de Ordesa. Fueling up with traditional Spanish fare was essential before tackling the adventures that lay ahead. Antonio and Gonzalo, who run the place, were incredibly welcoming. The restaurant is nestled right in the heart of the park, making it the perfect starting point for any excursion. I opted for some 'sorprendentes empanadas' , which were indeed surprisingly good, and a 'espectacular café cortado' to kickstart my energy levels. Nang went for a lighter option, but we both agreed the views from their terrace were the perfect accompaniment to our meal.

With our bellies full and spirits high, we set our sights on Pista la Caña. This unpaved road is known for its challenging conditions, and I was eager to test my mettle. The road, as I quickly discovered, was not for the faint of heart. It was narrow, potholed, and relentlessly steep, especially in that last kilometer. The average gradient of 16% in that final stretch was no joke!

I gripped the steering wheel, navigating our trusty vehicle (which, thankfully, had high clearance) through the rugged terrain. The views, however, were more than worth the effort. Each twist and turn revealed panoramic vistas of the Ordesa Valley, a tapestry of autumnal colors painting the landscape. The forests were ablaze with reds, golds, and oranges, a spectacle that made me reach for my camera every few minutes. I can see why autumn is considered one of the most breathtaking times to visit this park.

Reaching the summit of Punta Estaton, where Pista la Caña leads, was a triumph. The air was crisp and cool, and the sense of accomplishment washed over me as I gazed at the world stretched out below. It was a moment I won't soon forget.

Sometimes, the most challenging paths lead to the most rewarding views.

Next on our agenda was Faja de Escusana, a high natural balcony offering stunning views of the Ordesa Valley. This hike was less about physical challenge and more about soaking in the sheer beauty of the park. The trail wound along the cliffside, providing breathtaking perspectives of the valley floor, the towering peaks, and the meandering river below.

Nang was in her element, her keen eye spotting wildlife that I would have otherwise missed. She pointed out a lammergeier soaring effortlessly overhead, its impressive wingspan casting a shadow on the valley floor.

The crisp November air nipped at our cheeks, but the sun shone brightly, casting a warm glow on the landscape. I took countless photos, trying to capture the grandeur of the scene, but no image could truly do it justice. It’s one of those experiences you simply have to witness firsthand. The average temperature in Ordesa y Monte Perdido in November typically ranges from a high of 49°F (9°C) to a low of 34°F (1°C). It was indeed cold, but nothing that a good jacket couldn't handle.

As the day wore on, our thoughts turned to Monte Perdido, the third highest peak in the Pyrenees. While we didn't have time to scale its summit today, we admired its imposing presence from afar. Its snow-capped peak glistened in the afternoon sun, a beacon of natural beauty and a reminder of the challenges that await more seasoned mountaineers. I made a mental note to return someday and conquer that giant. Maybe I'll need crampons and an ice axe, if I attempt it in winter !

With the sun beginning its descent, we made our way to Broto for a late lunch at Restaurante Casa Joaquín. After our morning of adventure, we were ravenous, and this restaurant came highly recommended. Fortunately, we arrived before the main rush and secured a table in their cozy dining room. The 'ambiente acogedor' was immediately apparent. We started with some tapas, savoring the local flavors and enjoying a glass of house wine. For our main courses, Nang ordered the 'chuleton' , while I decided on a hearty stew, perfect for warming me up after a day in the mountains. The food was excellent, and the service was friendly and attentive. I can see why this place is so popular with locals and tourists alike.

Before heading back to our campsite, we stopped by Artesanía las Nieves in Torla. I wanted to pick up a few souvenirs to remind us of our time in Ordesa. The shop was filled with local crafts, from hand-painted ceramics to woolen garments. I found a beautiful little bell, which I bargained for, and Nang bought a handcrafted bracelet adorned with Pyrenean flowers. It's always nice to support local artisans and take a piece of the region home with us.

As we drove back, the sky was ablaze with color, the setting sun painting the clouds in hues of orange, pink, and purple. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day. We're planning on visiting the Ermitas de Tella tomorrow , and maybe even the Cascada del Cinca if the weather permits. I'm also looking forward to trying out Restaurante Pizzería El Taillón for breakfast.

Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park has truly captured my heart. Its stunning landscapes, challenging hikes, and charming villages have made this a trip to remember. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
