Reaching New Heights in Ordesa

Today was a day of pushing boundaries, both physically and mentally, here in the magnificent Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park. I’ve always found a unique satisfaction in challenging myself, and today’s itinerary was designed to do just that. From scaling the heights of Tozal del Mallo to delving into the ancient mysteries of Cueva de Coro Trasito, it was a day packed with adventure and discovery. And of course, no day is complete without savoring the local flavors, which we did with gusto!

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Hotel Restaurante Casa Frauca in Sarvisé. It’s a charming, rural-style hotel, and I must say, their traditional homemade dishes, crafted with seasonal products, were the perfect fuel for the day ahead. I opted for the *adobo casero de cerdo con alcachofas naturales en salsa verde*, a local pork dish with artichokes in green sauce, while my friends enjoyed other traditional options. The atmosphere was cozy, and the staff were incredibly welcoming, making it a delightful start to our adventure.

With our bellies full and spirits high, we set off to conquer Tozal del Mallo. The weather in November can be quite brisk, with average temperatures ranging from 1°C to 9°C, so we were sure to bundle up. The hike to the base of Tozal del Mallo was invigorating. The crisp air and stunning views of the Ordesa Valley were simply breathtaking. The autumn colors painted the landscape in hues of gold and red, making the scenery even more spectacular. Even though I'm used to Montreal's winters, the Pyrenees in November has a charm all its own.

The best view comes after the hardest climb.

Tozal del Mallo itself is an imposing rock formation that dominates the landscape. Though I am not a climber myself, some of my friends were eager to ascend a bit using the via ferrata, while I enjoyed the views from below. They reported that the climb was challenging, with some steep sections, but the panoramic views from the top were well worth the effort. They even spotted a few vultures soaring overhead!

After the exhilarating experience at Tozal del Mallo, we descended and made our way towards Cueva de Coro Trasito. This cave is not only a geological wonder but also a significant archaeological site. Situated at an altitude of 1,600 meters, it holds remains of human occupations dating back to the Bronze Age and the Early Neolithic periods. It’s fascinating to think that people lived in this very spot thousands of years ago!

The cave itself is a large, semi-circular shelter with a south-facing entrance. As we explored the cave, we could see how the sunlight penetrates deep inside, making it an ideal habitat for early humans. The archaeological excavations have revealed evidence of agricultural practices and animal husbandry dating back 7,300 years. They found remains of wheat, barley, sheep, cattle, and pigs, providing valuable insights into the lives of the cave’s inhabitants.

It’s amazing to consider that the people who lived here were cultivating crops and raising livestock so high up in the Pyrenees. It really puts things into perspective and makes you appreciate the ingenuity and resilience of our ancestors. The guide told us about the various excavations and findings, explaining how the cave was used for both shelter and livestock. Apparently, the cave was used for livestock until very recently, with walls dividing the space into different corrals.

After immersing ourselves in history, it was time for a late lunch. We headed to Casa Vallés in Broto, a charming tavern known for its authentic Spanish cuisine. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, and the tavern was adorned with rustic decor, creating a cozy setting. We indulged in a variety of traditional tapas and hearty dishes, showcasing the best of the region’s culinary heritage. I particularly enjoyed the *almejas* (clams) and the *entrecotte* (steak) which was served on a hot stone. My friends tried the *croquetas* and other *pintxos*. The prices were reasonable, and the portions were generous, making it a great value for money.

To cap off our day, we decided to check out El Nido del Búho, a local bar known for its relaxed atmosphere. It was the perfect spot to unwind after a day of hiking and exploring. We enjoyed some local beers and shared stories of our adventures, laughing and reminiscing about the day’s highlights. It’s these simple moments of camaraderie that make traveling with friends so special.

For dinner, we chose Restaurante La Brecha in Torla. This family-run restaurant is known for its tasty, home-cooked meals and friendly service. The *cordero* (lamb) and *crema catalana* are highly recommended. I decided to try the *gazpacho* and the *ensalada de queso azul*. The portions were generous, and the prices were reasonable, making it an excellent choice for a satisfying meal.

As I reflect on today’s experiences, I’m filled with a sense of gratitude and wonder. Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park is truly a special place, offering a unique blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and cultural richness. I’m already looking forward to tomorrow’s adventures, which include exploring Pista la Caña, Faja de Escusana, and Monte Perdido. Hopefully the weather will be favorable and we can enjoy the beautiful landscapes. We're planning to have breakfast at Restaurante La Pradera de Ordesa, lunch at Restaurante Casa Joaquín, and dinner at La Cantera. I am also hoping to do some shopping at Nieve&Sport (NURIA FARLED).
