Day 11: Farewell to Chefchaouen: A Blue Dream Comes to an End
Reflecting on our final day in Chefchaouen, exploring the ancient Medina, enjoying local flavors, and cherishing the Blue Pearl.
A Fond Farewell to the Blue Pearl
Today marked the end of our Moroccan adventure in Chefchaouen, and as I sit here reflecting, a wave of nostalgia washes over me. This trip with Nang has been nothing short of magical, a vibrant tapestry woven with the unique charm of the Blue Pearl. Our final day was a culmination of all the experiences we've gathered, a bittersweet symphony of exploration and farewells.
We started our day with a delightful breakfast at Patisserie Pain Chaouen. The aroma of freshly baked pastries filled the air, and we indulged in some tasty croissants, paired with aromatic Moroccan coffee. It was the perfect way to fuel up for our last day of exploration. The patisserie was clean and the staff were friendly, making our breakfast experience extra special.

Our first stop was the ancient Medina, المدينة القديمة الاثرية. Wandering through its blue-washed alleyways felt like stepping into a dream. The history of this place is palpable, dating back to its founding in 1471 as a fortress against Portuguese invaders. The Medina's blue color scheme, believed to have been introduced by Jewish refugees, created a serene and peaceful atmosphere. We explored the hidden corners, admiring the intricate architecture and soaking in the unique ambiance.

The beauty of Chefchaouen lies not just in its blue walls, but in the warmth and resilience of its people, and the rich history etched into every corner.
Next, we ventured towards Bab El Hammar, one of the historical gates of the Medina. The walk there was an experience in itself, passing through bustling streets and soaking in the local atmosphere. Bab El Hammar stands as a testament to the town's history, offering a glimpse into the cultural heritage of the region.

For lunch, we decided to try Restaurant Jbaria, known for its traditional Moroccan cuisine. We enjoyed a cozy spot on the terrace, away from the tourist crowds. Nang and I shared a flavorful tagine and some delicious couscous, savoring the authentic Moroccan spices. The service was relaxed, adding to the charm of the experience.

After lunch, we couldn't resist a bit of shopping at CHAOUEN GIFTS. We picked up a few souvenirs to remind us of our time here, tokens to carry back home to Montreal. I managed to find a beautiful, hand-painted ceramic bowl for our restaurant, a little piece of Chefchaouen to add to our collection. Nang, of course, found a lovely bracelet with intricate Berber designs.

In the late afternoon, we took a moment to simply sit in Place Outa El Hammam, the heart of the Medina, and watch the world go by. The square, surrounded by the Kasbah and the Great Mosque, was a hub of activity. We sipped on some mint tea, enjoying the peaceful energy of the city. It was a perfect way to reflect on our journey and appreciate the beauty of Chefchaouen.
For our final dinner in Chefchaouen, we chose Assaada, a charming Moroccan restaurant known for its warm ambiance. The restaurant was beautifully decorated with Moroccan tiles and vibrant colors, creating a welcoming atmosphere. We indulged in their signature tagine dishes, savoring the authentic flavors of Morocco. To cap off the evening, we enjoyed some traditional Moroccan mint tea and pastries.
