Friday Adventures in the Blue Pearl
Today in Chefchaouen was a delightful mix of scenic beauty, cultural immersion, and culinary delights. Nang and I set out to explore more of this enchanting blue city, and it certainly didn't disappoint. From breathtaking viewpoints to savoring local flavors, every moment was a treat.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Whole Bean Coffee. It's always a pleasure to start the day with a good cup of coffee and some light fare before diving into our adventures. Fueled up and ready to go, our first stop was the Vue panoramique de la plage. Now, I know what you might be thinking: a beach view in the middle of the mountains? Well, it’s more of a scenic overlook that offers a stunning vista of the surrounding landscapes. The view stretched out before us, showcasing the unique beauty of the Chefchaouen region. The rolling hills and valleys, combined with the crisp morning air, made for a truly invigorating experience. I took several photos, trying to capture the essence of the scene, but as any photographer knows, some moments are just too grand to be fully captured by a lens.

Next on our itinerary was Bab Chaouen, one of the historic gates of the city. Wandering through Bab Chaouen felt like stepping back in time. The narrow, winding streets, the vibrant blue-washed buildings, and the bustling local markets created a captivating atmosphere. Nang and I enjoyed strolling through the area, soaking in the sights and sounds of daily life in Chefchaouen. We explored the local shops, admiring the handmade crafts, textiles, and traditional souvenirs. It's amazing how much history is embedded in these old streets; you can almost feel the stories of centuries past just by walking through them. I picked up a small, intricately carved wooden box as a memento of our visit, while Nang found a beautiful, hand-woven scarf. The merchants were friendly and welcoming, and we enjoyed practicing our French with them, though my Thai accent probably added a unique twist to their language.

For lunch, we decided to try Restaurant Hamsa, a place recommended by our host at Maison D'hôtes Afassi. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, and the menu featured a variety of traditional Moroccan dishes. I opted for the tagine with chicken and olives, while Nang chose the couscous with vegetables. Both dishes were flavorful and satisfying, a testament to the rich culinary traditions of Morocco. The spices were fragrant and the ingredients fresh, making for a truly memorable meal. We shared a pot of mint tea, savoring the sweet and refreshing taste as we discussed our adventures of the day.

The beauty of Chefchaouen lies not just in its blue walls, but in the vibrant culture and warm hospitality of its people.
As the afternoon wore on, we took some time to simply wander and get lost in the maze-like streets of the medina. This is one of my favorite things to do in any new city – to set aside the map and just explore, letting the city reveal itself to you. We stumbled upon hidden courtyards, ornate doorways, and breathtaking views that we would never have found if we had stuck to a strict itinerary. I always find that these unplanned moments are often the most rewarding, offering a glimpse into the true heart and soul of a place.
In the evening, as the sun began to set, we made our way to The Magic Lamp House of Aladin for dinner. The name alone conjured up images of Arabian Nights and fantastical adventures, and the restaurant did not disappoint. The ambiance was enchanting, with traditional Moroccan decor, soft lighting, and intricate details that transported us to another world. We were seated on the rooftop terrace, which offered stunning panoramic views of the city. As darkness fell, the blue walls of Chefchaouen glowed under the moonlight, creating a magical atmosphere.

The menu at The Magic Lamp House of Aladin was extensive, featuring a wide range of Moroccan and Mediterranean dishes. I decided to try the orange chicken, while Nang ordered the tagine. Both dishes were exquisitely prepared and presented, a feast for both the eyes and the palate. The flavors were rich and complex, and the portions were generous. We also sampled some local wine, which complemented our meal perfectly. The service was attentive and friendly, adding to the overall experience. Our server, Reda, was particularly engaging, sharing stories about the restaurant and the city.
After dinner, we lingered on the rooftop terrace, sipping mint tea and enjoying the cool evening breeze. The city below us was alive with activity, the sounds of music and laughter drifting up from the streets. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day in Chefchaouen. As we walked back to Maison D'hôtes Afassi, hand in hand, I felt a deep sense of contentment. Chefchaouen had truly captured our hearts, and I knew that we would carry the memories of this enchanting blue city with us long after we had left.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, our final day in Chefchaouen, we plan to explore the ancient Medina and Bab El Hammar. I am particularly interested in seeing the traditional crafts and perhaps picking up a few more souvenirs. We'll have breakfast at Patisserie Pain Chaouen, lunch at Restaurant Jbaria, and a farewell dinner at Assaada. Before heading back to Tangier, we will stop by CHAOUEN GIFTS for some last-minute shopping.
As our trip nears its end, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences we have shared and the memories we have created. Chefchaouen is a place that will stay with me forever, a reminder of the beauty and wonder that can be found in the most unexpected corners of the world. I am eager to share more stories and photos from our adventures, and I hope that they inspire you to embark on your own journeys of discovery. Until tomorrow, goodnight from Chefchaouen.
Perhaps one of the most striking things about Chefchaouen is its famous blue hue. There are many theories as to why the city is painted in various shades of blue, ranging from practical reasons like mosquito repellent to more spiritual explanations related to Jewish traditions. Whatever the reason, the blue color creates a unique and visually stunning environment that sets Chefchaouen apart from any other city I have ever visited.
The people of Chefchaouen are incredibly warm and welcoming. Everywhere we went, we were greeted with smiles and genuine hospitality. Despite the language barrier, we were able to connect with locals through gestures, smiles, and a shared sense of curiosity. It is these human connections that truly enrich the travel experience, reminding us that, despite our differences, we are all part of a global community.
As I reflect on our time here, I am reminded of a quote by Ibn Battuta, a famous Moroccan explorer:
Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.
Chefchaouen has certainly left me speechless, and I am eager to continue sharing its stories with you. Goodnight from the Blue Pearl of Morocco.
Join us on an enchanting journey to Chefchaouen, Morocco, where vibrant blue streets and rich culture await exploration and relaxation.
