Echoes of the Past in Assisi
Today was a day of delving deeper into Assisi's rich history and spiritual heart. While Nang and Ananda were keen on exploring more of the religious sites, I was particularly drawn to the ancient fortifications that have stood guard over this city for centuries. It’s funny how, even in a place as steeped in spirituality as Assisi, my mind often wanders to the more tangible aspects of its past – the stones, the walls, the structures that have witnessed countless generations. It's a connection to history that I find grounding, much like the solid foundations of my own restaurant back in Montreal.
Our day began, as always, with a hearty breakfast. We ventured out to Enoteca Mazzini, a charming spot that came highly recommended. The reviews online were spot on. The atmosphere was truly enchanting. It felt like stepping into a movie set, with beautiful greenery and a peaceful ambiance. Nang and Ananda were immediately captivated, snapping photos while I savored the moment, enjoying a cappuccino and a pastry. The outdoor seating area was particularly delightful, providing a serene start to our day. I can see why so many people stop just to capture its beauty. I made a mental note to try and recreate some of that atmosphere in my own restaurant – a little piece of Assisi in Montreal.

Fueled up and ready, our first stop was Rocca Minore. The climb up to the fortress was a bit of a trek, especially in the July heat, but the views were more than worth it. As we ascended, I couldn't help but think about the strategic importance of this location throughout history. Perched on the hillside, it offered commanding views of Assisi and the surrounding Mount Subasio. I learned that Rocca Minore dates back to 1174 and was once connected to Rocca Maggiore by walkable walls. It’s amazing to think about the secret paths hidden beneath those walls, testaments to the city's medieval defenses. Looking out over the landscape, I felt a profound connection to the past, imagining the soldiers who once stood watch here, protecting their city from invaders. Ananda, with his youthful energy, was particularly fascinated by the architecture and the stories behind the fortress. Nang, ever the pragmatist, was more concerned with finding a shady spot to take in the view.

To walk through Assisi is to walk through centuries of history, faith, and art, all intertwined in a way that’s both humbling and inspiring.
After soaking in the panoramic views from Rocca Minore, we made our way to Santuario di San Francesco Piccolino. This small chapel holds a special significance, as it is believed to be near the birthplace of St. Francis. As we approached, I noticed the inscription above the door, written in Latin, which translates to: This oratory was the stable of the ox and ass in which was born Saint Francis, the mirror of the world. It was a humbling reminder of the humble beginnings of such an influential figure. While the story of St. Francis being born in a stable might be more legend than fact, the atmosphere of the sanctuary was undeniably powerful. Nang was visibly moved by the experience, her eyes reflecting a deep sense of reverence. Ananda, though not as religiously inclined, seemed to appreciate the historical and cultural significance of the site. For me, it was a moment to reflect on the enduring legacy of St. Francis and the values he stood for – simplicity, compassion, and a deep connection to nature.

Lunch was at Ristorante Taverna de l'Arco, a place recommended for its authentic Umbrian cuisine. The reviews I read online highlighted the quality of the food and the warm, inviting atmosphere, and they didn't disappoint. We shared a variety of dishes, from fresh pasta to grilled meats, all prepared with locally sourced ingredients. The flavors were rich and satisfying, a true taste of Italy. What struck me most was the passion and dedication of the staff, who clearly took pride in their culinary heritage. It reminded me of my own restaurant, where we strive to bring the flavors of Thailand to Montreal. Good food, after all, is a universal language that transcends cultures and borders.

As the afternoon wore on, we decided to take a break from sightseeing and relax at Bar Trovellesi. I had read mixed reviews about it, but we decided to give it a try. It turned out to be a decent spot for a quick drink. We enjoyed some refreshing beverages and watched the world go by. It wasn't the most outstanding place we visited, but it provided a pleasant respite from the day's activities. The prices were fair, and the location was convenient, making it a good option for a casual break. I did notice that the service was a bit slow, but perhaps that was just the pace of life in Assisi – a little more relaxed and unhurried than what I'm used to.

Dinner was at Ristorante La Stalla, a place known for its traditional Umbrian dishes and rustic setting. It was a bit outside the main city center, but well worth the trip. The restaurant had a warm, inviting atmosphere, with a large fireplace where they roasted meats and prepared the local torta al testo. The food was simple but delicious, and the prices were very reasonable. We sat at long wooden tables, sharing our meal with other travelers and locals. It felt like being part of a big family, sharing stories and laughter over good food. It was exactly the kind of experience I was hoping for – an authentic taste of Umbrian culture. Nang and Ananda both enjoyed the meal, though Ananda was particularly impressed by the size of the portions. I made a mental note to try and recreate some of the dishes back home – perhaps a special Umbrian night at the restaurant.

As the day drew to a close, we walked back to our hotel, the Hotel Porta Nuova, feeling tired but content. Assisi had once again worked its magic, captivating us with its history, spirituality, and charm. I thought about the contrast between the ancient fortresses and the serene sanctuaries, the bustling restaurants and the quiet chapels. It’s a city of many layers, each offering a unique glimpse into its soul. And as I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to share this experience with my family.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Piazza inferiore di San Francesco and the Pinacoteca Comunale Palazzo Vallemani. I'm particularly looking forward to seeing the art collection at the Palazzo Vallemani, as I've always had a soft spot for Renaissance art. Nang is excited to visit the Piazza inferiore, and Ananda is just happy to go wherever the adventure takes us. We also plan to do some shopping at HUMILIS Made in Assisi. I am on the lookout for unique souvenirs to bring back home, something that will remind us of our time here and perhaps inspire a new dish or two at the restaurant. Until then, buona notte from Assisi.
P.S. I nearly forgot! I managed to find a power bank today. It will be useful for the rest of our trip.
