A Day of Discovery in Korat

Today was a day of contrasts, a journey through time that started with ancient ruins and ended in a modern shopping mall. Nakhon Ratchasima continues to surprise me with its blend of historical depth and contemporary life. It’s a reminder of how Thailand beautifully preserves its past while embracing the future.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at 8 Dining. It’s always a pleasure to start the day with a good meal, setting the tone for the adventures ahead. With the family ready and energized, we set out to explore the historical and spiritual sites of the region.

Our first stop was Wat Lak Roi, a temple that’s been on my list since we arrived in Nakhon Ratchasima. The temple is known for its intricate designs and vibrant colors. As we approached, the beauty of the temple was immediately apparent, with its ornate decorations and peaceful atmosphere. The kids were fascinated by the statues and the detailed artwork, while Nang and I appreciated the serenity of the place. We spent some time wandering through the grounds, taking in the meticulously crafted statues and the overall sense of tranquility. It was a perfect start to a day of exploration.

Visiting historical sites is like flipping through the pages of a giant history book, each location telling a unique story of the past.

Next on our itinerary was the Mueang Sema Historical Site, an ancient city with ruins dating back thousands of years. The site is about 37 kilometers from the city. As we drove, I shared some of the history of the area with Ananda, explaining how this region was once a vital center of the Dvaravati civilization. When we arrived, the sprawling site was impressive, with its ancient moats and embankments still visible. We explored the ruins, imagining what life must have been like centuries ago. The kids enjoyed running around the open spaces, while Nang and I took our time to read the informational signs and appreciate the historical significance of the site.

It's amazing to think that this area was once a bustling city, a hub of culture and commerce. Although much of the site is now reduced to ruins, it’s not as impressive as the large temples. You can still feel the weight of history in the air. Mueang Sema, with its moats and temple ruins, offered a tangible connection to Thailand’s rich past.

After a morning immersed in history, we decided to switch gears and indulge in some modern pleasures. We headed back towards the city, our destination being The Mall Korat, one of the largest shopping centers in the region. By the time we arrived, we were all quite hungry, so our first order of business was lunch. We chose Tomodachi, a Japanese restaurant in the mall. The food was delicious, and it was a welcome break to sit down and relax after our explorations. Ananda was particularly happy with his ramen, while Nang enjoyed a bento box. I opted for some sushi, which was fresh and flavorful.

With our appetites satisfied, we ventured into UNIQLO, a store that Ananda had been wanting to visit. He’s always been interested in fashion, and UNIQLO’s modern designs and quality materials caught his eye. Nang and I took the opportunity to browse as well, and we all ended up finding some new additions to our wardrobes. It was a fun and relaxing experience, and it was nice to see Ananda so engaged and excited about something.

As the afternoon wore on, we decided to treat ourselves to a special dinner. We had heard great things about a seafood restaurant with Thai food, so we made our way there. The restaurant was known for its fresh seafood and authentic Thai dishes, and we were eager to try it out. The atmosphere was lively, with warm lighting and tasteful décor that reflected the local culture. We ordered a variety of dishes, including sea bass with fish sauce and shrimp vermicelli. The sea bass was sweet, mild, and crispy. Every dish was a delight, and we savored each bite as we enjoyed the vibrant energy of the place.

After dinner, we took a leisurely stroll around the area, soaking in the sights and sounds of Nakhon Ratchasima at night. The city was bustling with activity, and it was a great way to end our day of contrasts. As we walked, I reflected on the day’s experiences. From the ancient ruins of Mueang Sema to the modern delights of The Mall Korat, Nakhon Ratchasima had shown us its many facets. It was a reminder of the rich tapestry of Thai culture, where history and modernity coexist in harmony.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we plan to visit the Maha Weerawong National Museum and the Korat Museum, hoping to delve even deeper into the region’s history and culture. We might even check out Some Might Say, a local bar, for a relaxing evening [if time allows, which I doubt it will]. But for now, it’s time to rest and recharge for another day of adventure. As we head back to the Leosor Hotel, I feel grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with my family, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
