Day 14: A Saturday of Serenity and Surprises in Korat
Discovering local gems in Nakhon Ratchasima: from spiritual sites to culinary delights and a vibrant nightlife experience.
A Day of Exploration and Evening Indulgence
Today marked the penultimate day of our family adventure in Nakhon Ratchasima, and what a day it was! From exploring serene temples to indulging in the local culinary scene, and ending the night with a sophisticated drink, Korat truly unveiled its charm. It's amazing how much you can discover when you allow yourself to wander and be open to new experiences.
Our day began with a leisurely breakfast at Banjong. The cozy coffee shop vibes were perfect to start the day. The cafe is located at a corner of a five-way intersection near the train station. The atmosphere was great and the food was delicious. Nang enjoyed a traditional Thai coffee, while Ananda opted for a more familiar latte. I savored a simple but satisfying plate of *khao tom*, a rice soup that always reminds me of home. It was a relaxed start, setting the tone for a day of exploration.

Sometimes, the most memorable moments are found in the unplanned detours and unexpected discoveries.
After breakfast, we decided to visit Centara Korat. While we weren't staying there, I'd heard great things about it and wanted to see it for myself. The hotel is modern and conveniently located next to Central Plaza. The staff was friendly and accommodating. We took a quick tour, admiring the rooftop swimming pool and the well-equipped gym. It’s definitely a place I’d consider for future stays in Korat, especially with its proximity to shopping and dining options.

Next on our itinerary was Meru Brahmathat. This toppled brick stupa dates back to the late Ayutthaya period. According to local folklore, it marks the cremation site of King Bhramathat. The stupa sits on a man-made hill. While it may not be in the best condition, it still presents an impressive sight. Wandering around the site, I couldn't help but reflect on the layers of history beneath our feet. It's humbling to stand in a place where centuries of stories have unfolded.

Lunchtime found us at Daya's Eatery. This restaurant is known for its fusion cuisine and great service. The fancy decor and enjoyable atmosphere made us feel relaxed. Nang and Ananda were eager to try the burgers, while I decided on a classic Thai dish – *pad see ew*. The food was delicious, and the prices were reasonable. It’s a cozy spot, perfect for a casual meal.

As the afternoon waned, we took some time to relax back at the Leosor Hotel, recharging for our final evening in Nakhon Ratchasima. I took the opportunity to catch up on some writing, while Nang indulged in a traditional Thai massage at the hotel spa. Ananda, ever the social butterfly, connected with some fellow travelers in the hotel lobby.

For our last dinner in Korat, we chose 8 Dining. This restaurant offers authentic Thai cuisine with live music. The atmosphere was lively and the staff was cheerful. We savored dishes like fried prawns, salads, and fish. To complement our meal, we enjoyed some local craft beer. The live music added to the ambiance, making it a memorable dining experience.

To cap off the night, I ventured out solo to RARE Dine & Wine. This bar is known for its European-style ambiance and extensive wine selection. I enjoyed a glass of red wine while listening to live jazz music. It was the perfect way to unwind and reflect on our journey. The bar has a romantic atmosphere and is known for its excellent service. Sipping on a glass of wine, I felt a sense of contentment wash over me. It was a fitting end to a day filled with exploration and indulgence.

As I walked back to the hotel, the cool night air was a welcome contrast to the day's warmth. The city lights twinkled around me, each one a tiny beacon in the darkness. Tomorrow marks the final day of our trip, and while I'm looking forward to returning to Montreal, I know I'll carry the memories of Nakhon Ratchasima with me always. We plan to visit the Thao Suranari (Ya Mo) Monument and Prasat Hin Phanom Wan. We'll have breakfast at Tiger is coming beer and eatery, lunch at The Orchard Restaurant, and our farewell dinner at Tapestry Chinese Restaurant. Before heading to Bangkok, we will do some last minute souvenir shopping at Big C Supercenter.
Nakhon Ratchasima has been more than just a destination; it's been a homecoming, a reconnection with my roots, and a reminder of the simple joys of family and exploration. Until next time, Korat, *sawasdee*!
