Reaching New Heights

Today was a day of both physical challenge and profound discovery. As I continue my solo trek through the Andes, I find myself increasingly in awe of the Incas' ingenuity and the sheer beauty of this land. Each step forward brings new perspectives, not just of the landscape, but also of myself.

The day began as they often do on a trek like this, with the sun peeking over the mountain tops, casting a golden glow on the campsite. I packed up my gear, a little sore from yesterday's climb, but eager to see what awaited me. Today's itinerary included exploring Qochapata and the Choquequirao Puquio, two significant sites along the Choquequirao Trek.

Before setting off, I made sure to replenish my energy with a hearty breakfast. While I’m out here roughing it in the wilderness, I can’t help but think back to my restaurant, and how Nang would be prepping all sorts of delicious meals for our customers. I miss that energy, that sense of creating something that brings people joy. But then again, this trek is a different kind of creation, a personal journey of discovery.

Qochapata: A Glimpse into the Past

The hike to Qochapata was challenging, with steep inclines and rocky paths that tested my endurance. But as I ascended, the views became increasingly rewarding. The panoramic vistas of the surrounding mountains were simply breathtaking, making every drop of sweat worthwhile. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of wildflowers and damp earth. It reminded me of hiking in the Laurentian Mountains back in Quebec, but on a much grander scale.

Reaching Qochapata, I was immediately struck by the site's strategic location. Perched high on a ridge, it offered commanding views of the valleys below. It was easy to imagine the Incas using this vantage point to monitor the surrounding lands and protect their settlements. I spent a good hour exploring the ruins, marveling at the intricate stonework and the sheer scale of the construction. The precision with which the stones were cut and fitted together was truly remarkable, a testament to the Incas' engineering prowess.

As I wandered through the site, I couldn't help but reflect on the lives of the people who once lived here. What were their hopes and dreams? What challenges did they face? It's humbling to stand in a place that has witnessed so much history, to feel the weight of the past all around you.

The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page.

Choquequirao Puquio: Unearthing Ancient Springs

After Qochapata, my next destination was Choquequirao Puquio, an archaeological site known for its ancient springs. The hike to the springs was equally challenging, but the anticipation of discovering this hidden gem kept me going. According to local Quechua, the name possibly means metal spring.

Arriving at Choquequirao Puquio, I was greeted by the sight of crystal-clear water gushing from the earth. The Incas were masters of water management, and these springs were a testament to their ingenuity. They had constructed a series of channels and pools to capture and distribute the water, ensuring a reliable source of this precious resource for their community.

I sat by the springs for a while, listening to the soothing sound of the water and reflecting on the importance of water in our lives. It's something we often take for granted, but here in the Andes, where water is scarce, its value is truly appreciated. I thought about sustainable living, one of my interests, and how the Incas were practicing it centuries ago.

A Culinary Reflection in Cusco

As the day drew to a close, I started thinking about dinner. While I'm out here relying on trail snacks and simple meals, I can't help but reminisce about some of the amazing restaurants I've visited in Cusco before starting the trek. I remember Kusikuy Restaurante, a place known for its traditional Peruvian cuisine and warm atmosphere. I recall reading online that it is considered the best restaurant in Cusco. Their cuy (guinea pig) is supposed to be spectacular, and the presentation is something to behold. I've always been a bit hesitant to try cuy, but perhaps next time I'm in Cusco, I'll be a bit more adventurous.

Then there's Chullos Restaurant & Craft Beer, a spot that combines Peruvian flavors with craft beer. I've heard they have a great selection of artisanal beers and some tasty alpaca dishes. I do enjoy a good craft beer, and the thought of pairing it with some local cuisine is definitely appealing.

And of course, there's Inka Grill, a restaurant right on the Plaza de Armas that offers an international menu with a Peruvian twist. I remember reading that it is a pioneer in revolutionizing the city's gastronomy. They have everything from burgers to pastas to traditional Andean dishes. It's a great place to go if you're looking for a bit of variety.

A Nightcap in Cusco?

Speaking of Cusco, I also recall stumbling upon a gem of a bar called Black Cat Bar Cusco - Craft Cocktails & Spirits. It's a cozy and welcoming spot located near the Plaza de Armas, with a warm ambiance and comfortable seating. They offer a variety of cocktails made with unique spirits, as well as classic mixology styles. It’s an ideal place to escape the noise of other lively bars in the area. I remember reading a review that said their signature cocktails are an invitation to slow down and savor the moment. That sounds like just what I need after a long day of trekking.

As I settle into my campsite for the night, I can't help but feel grateful for this incredible experience. The Choquequirao Trek is more than just a hike; it's a journey of discovery, a chance to connect with the past and appreciate the beauty of the present. And who knows, maybe tomorrow I'll even spot a condor soaring overhead, a true symbol of the Andes.

Looking Ahead

Tomorrow, I plan to continue my exploration of Choquequirao, visiting Choquequirao Travel and the Centro Arqueológico Qotakalle. I'm eager to learn more about these ancient sites and uncover more of the secrets they hold. But for now, I'll rest and recharge, ready for another day of adventure in the Andes. I think that I might visit Artesanias Maki tomorrow to buy some souvenirs.

As I drift off to sleep, I can't help but wonder what new wonders tomorrow will bring. The Choquequirao Trek has already exceeded my expectations, and I know that the best is yet to come. I miss Nang and Ananda, but I know that this journey is something I need to do for myself. It's a chance to reconnect with my roots, to challenge myself physically and mentally, and to gain a new perspective on life. And for that, I am truly grateful.
