Day 2: Whispers of the Ancients
Today was a day of profound discovery, a deep dive into the heart of Inca history. As I sit here, the Andean air crisp around me, I'm filled with a sense of awe and respect for the civilization that once thrived in these mountains. The trek to Choquequirao Archaeological Park and the challenging ascent to Abra Choquequirao were more than just physical feats; they were journeys back in time.

The morning began with a hearty breakfast at Organika Restaurant in Cusco [i]. Fueling up with their organic offerings was the perfect way to prepare for the day's adventures. I remember when Nang and I first opened our restaurant in Montreal, we were so passionate about using fresh, local ingredients, much like Organika does. It's a philosophy that resonates deeply with me, whether I'm in my own kitchen or halfway across the world.

After breakfast, I set off towards Choquequirao. The bus ride to the trailhead was filled with anticipation. I couldn't help but think about Ananda, my son, and how he would have loved to join me on this adventure. He's always been fascinated by history, and I know he would have been captivated by the stories that these ancient stones hold.
The initial stretch of the trek was relatively gentle, allowing me to soak in the scenery. The Andes are truly majestic, their peaks piercing the sky like ancient guardians. As I walked, I couldn't help but reflect on why I chose this particular journey. It wasn't just about seeing the ruins; it was about connecting with a culture, understanding a history, and challenging myself in ways that I don't often get to do in my everyday life.
Reaching Choquequirao Archaeological Park was an experience in itself. The sheer scale of the site is breathtaking. Terraces cascade down the mountainside, and the precision of the stonework is a testament to the ingenuity of the Inca people. I spent hours wandering through the ruins, imagining what life must have been like here centuries ago. It's easy to see why Choquequirao is often referred to as Machu Picchu's sister city. While it may not be as well-known, it possesses a unique charm and a sense of solitude that is hard to find elsewhere.
Lunch at LA TERRAZA DE CHOQUEQUIRAO was a welcome respite. The views from the terrace were simply stunning, providing a panoramic vista of the surrounding mountains. As I savored my meal, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience such beauty.

To walk in the footsteps of those who came before us is to understand a little more about where we are going.
The afternoon brought the most challenging part of the day: the ascent to Abra Choquequirao. The trail was steep and demanding, testing my physical limits at every turn. There were moments when I questioned my ability to reach the summit, but I pushed on, driven by a desire to see what lay beyond. The air thinned with every step, and my lungs burned with the effort, but I kept going. I remembered all those hikes with Nang in the Laurentian Mountains, preparing me for moments just like these.

Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, I reached the top of Abra Choquequirao. The sense of accomplishment was immense, but it was the view that truly took my breath away. From this vantage point, the entire valley stretched out before me, a tapestry of green and brown woven together by the Apurimac River. The snow-capped peaks in the distance seemed close enough to touch, and the clouds danced around them like playful spirits. It was a scene of unparalleled beauty, a reward for all the hard work and sweat.
As the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the mountains, I made my way back down the trail. The descent was almost as challenging as the ascent, but I was buoyed by the memories of the day's discoveries. I felt a sense of connection to this land, to its history, and to the people who had called it home for centuries.
Dinner at Chull's - Peruvian Cuisine & Craft Beer in Cusco was the perfect way to end the day. The restaurant's cozy atmosphere and delicious food were a welcome treat after a long day of trekking. I savored every bite of the traditional Peruvian dishes, reflecting on the flavors and aromas that define this country's culinary heritage. It reminded me of the satisfaction I feel when customers enjoy the authentic Thai cuisine at my restaurant.

Before heading back to my accommodation, I decided to check out Inka Happiness Cultural Bar. The bar was alive with music and laughter, a vibrant celebration of Peruvian culture. I enjoyed a refreshing drink, soaking in the atmosphere and chatting with fellow travelers. It was the perfect way to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures.

As I walked back to my lodging, the stars twinkled above me, a reminder of the vastness of the universe and the smallness of my place within it. Yet, in that moment, I felt a sense of belonging, a connection to something larger than myself. Today was a day of discovery, a day of challenge, and a day of profound beauty. It was a day that I will never forget.
Tomorrow, I plan to continue my exploration of the Choquequirao Trekking area and Cerro Choquequirao. I'm eager to see what other wonders await me in this remarkable corner of the world. I also hope to visit Green House for breakfast, Pachapapa for lunch, and Uchu Peruvian Steakhouse for dinner. If time permits, I'll try to stop by Rummy Outdoor to pick up some sunscreen, since I forgot to pack it!
Goodnight from the Andes. It’s time for this weary traveler to rest.
