Solo Adventure on the Choquequirao Trek
Day 1: Setting Off on the Choquequirao Trek: First Steps into the Lost City
Day 1 of my solo trek to Choquequirao: A culinary kickoff in Cusco and gearing up for an unforgettable journey into the Andes.
Embarking on the Adventure of a Lifetime
The anticipation has been building for months, and today, it finally became a reality. My solo trek to Choquequirao, the 'sister city' of Machu Picchu, has begun. It's a journey I've dreamt of for years, a chance to immerse myself in the history and natural beauty of Peru. With my backpack packed and my spirit high, I set out from Montreal, ready to embrace whatever challenges and wonders lie ahead.
The journey from Montreal to Cusco was long, but the excitement kept me going. After a brief stopover, I finally landed in Cusco, the gateway to the Andes. The altitude hit me immediately, a stark reminder that I was now in a different world, a world of towering peaks and ancient mysteries. I checked into a simple but comfortable guesthouse, eager to start exploring, but knowing rest was paramount to acclimatize.
My first order of business was to fuel up for the adventure ahead. I headed to Inka Wasi Restaurant Cusco for breakfast, enticed by reviews touting its cozy ambiance and traditional Peruvian dishes. I decided on the garlic trout, and it was superb. The staff was friendly, making me feel welcome and setting a positive tone for the journey. Sipping my coca tea, I savored the moment, knowing this was just the beginning of a culinary adventure.
With a full stomach and a sense of purpose, I ventured out to gather any last-minute supplies for the trek. I made a quick stop at a local shop, grabbing some extra trail snacks and a few essentials I had forgotten – namely sunscreen, a rookie mistake for someone who has spent as much time outdoors as I have! I also picked up an extra set of camera batteries; can't risk missing any photo opportunities. Fully prepared, I boarded a bus headed towards the trailhead of the Choquequirao Trek Peru.

The bus ride was an experience in itself, winding through narrow mountain roads with breathtaking views at every turn. The landscape transformed from bustling cityscapes to rolling hills and finally, rugged mountain terrain. As we climbed higher, the air grew crisper, and the anticipation mounted. I struck up a conversation with a local Quechua woman, who shared stories of her ancestors and the ancient city of Choquequirao. Her words painted a vivid picture of the history and culture I was about to encounter.
Arriving at the trailhead, I felt a surge of excitement mixed with a healthy dose of trepidation. The Choquequirao Trek is known to be challenging, with steep ascents and descents, and I knew I had to be physically and mentally prepared. I took a deep breath, adjusted my backpack, and began the descent. The first few hours were tough, my leg muscles burning as I navigated the steep, rocky path. But the stunning scenery kept me going, the panoramic views of the Apurímac River canyon a constant reminder of the beauty that surrounded me.
The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
After a few hours of hiking, I stopped for lunch at Choquequirao craft restaurant peruvian cuisine, a small, rustic eatery along the trail. The hearty Peruvian cuisine was just what I needed to replenish my energy, and the friendly locals made me feel right at home. I enjoyed a simple yet delicious meal of quinoa soup and fresh bread, savoring the flavors and the warmth of the sun on my face.

As the afternoon wore on, the trail became even more challenging. The sun beat down mercilessly, and the steep inclines tested my endurance. But I pressed on, determined to reach my campsite before nightfall. Along the way, I passed fellow trekkers, exchanging smiles and words of encouragement. There was a sense of camaraderie among us, a shared understanding of the challenges we faced and the rewards that awaited us.
Finally, as the sun began to dip below the horizon, I reached my campsite. Exhausted but exhilarated, I set up my tent and prepared for the night ahead. The campsite was nestled in a small clearing, surrounded by towering mountains and a star-filled sky. The air was crisp and cool, and the silence was broken only by the sound of the wind whispering through the trees.
For dinner, I treated myself to a well-deserved meal at Mapacho Craft Beer Restaurant. Despite its name being known for its high-quality craft beer, I was interested in its Peruvian cuisine. I opted for the Lomo Saltado. The atmosphere was casual and the service was top-notch. It was the perfect way to end a long and challenging day.

As I sit here now, writing this entry by the light of my headlamp, I can't help but feel a sense of gratitude and awe. Today was just the first day of my Choquequirao adventure, but it was already filled with unforgettable experiences. The beauty of the landscape, the warmth of the people, and the challenge of the trail have all combined to create a day I will never forget. I am reminded of why I love to travel, why I love to explore, and why I love to share my experiences with others.
Tomorrow, I will continue my trek towards Choquequirao Archaeological Park and Abra Choquequirao, eager to discover the secrets of this ancient city. I plan on having breakfast at Organika Restaurant and lunch at LA TERRAZA DE CHOQUEQUIRAO. But for now, I will rest and recharge, knowing that the adventure has only just begun. I am also hoping to visit Inka Happiness Cultural Bar for a drink. The challenges of the day have faded, replaced by a sense of peace and anticipation. I am ready for whatever tomorrow may bring, ready to embrace the journey and all its wonders.
I’ve always found travel to be a great leveler, stripping away the superficial and leaving you face to face with yourself and the world around you. As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this opportunity to challenge myself, to connect with nature, and to discover the hidden treasures of Peru. Goodnight from the Andes!
