Whispers of the Past

Today was a day of deep exploration, venturing further into the heart of Inca history. The Choquequirao Trek continues to surprise me with its hidden gems, each site offering a new perspective on this fascinating civilization. I'm constantly reminded of how much there is to learn and discover, and I feel grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences.

The day began with a hearty breakfast at Toto's House. Energized, I set out to explore the Ruinas de Choquechurco. Nestled high in the Andes, reaching an altitude of approximately 3,800 meters above sea level in the district of Mollepata, the ruins immediately transported me back in time. The name Choquechurco, possibly derived from Aymara and Quechua, translates to the place where gold was placed, hinting at its significance during the Inca empire.

The panoramic views were simply breathtaking. From this vantage point, I could see the valleys of Limatambo and the majestic snow-capped peaks of Ampay, Socllaccassa and Salkantay. It was easy to imagine the Incas using this location for strategic oversight and control. The site itself features impressive stone walls and agricultural terraces, showcasing the Incas' advanced engineering skills.

Exploring Choquechurco felt like stepping into a living history book, each stone whispering tales of a civilization that mastered the art of blending architecture with nature.

I spent a considerable amount of time wandering through the ruins, trying to envision what life might have been like here centuries ago. The complex is believed to have been a ceremonial and religious center, with platforms used for Inca rituals and offerings to their gods. The location high in the mountains reinforced the connection to the Apus, the protective mountain deities in the Inca worldview. Although the site is partially in ruins due to the passage of time and lack of maintenance, the intricate stonework and the sheer magnitude of the landscape made a lasting impression.

After Choquechurco, I continued my trek towards Choquesuysuy. This archaeological site, whose name means where the gold is purified in Quechua, is another of the lesser-known wonders of the Inca Trail. As I approached, I was immediately struck by its ingenious hydraulic engineering. The Incas were masters of water management, and Choquesuysuy is a perfect example of their expertise. The site features channels, fountains, and terraces that demonstrate their ability to harness and control water for both practical and ceremonial purposes.

Like Choquechurco, Choquesuysuy was likely built during the height of the Inca Empire, playing a vital role in their religious and administrative systems. It served as a strategic point for rest and ceremony on the way to Machu Picchu. The Incas integrated their architecture with the natural surroundings, aligning structures with water flows and the surrounding mountains. It's believed that Choquesuysuy had a ceremonial purpose, especially related to purification rituals and offerings to the Andean gods.

As I explored the site, I noticed the unique stone circles, which archaeologist Julio Cordova believes could have been overnight waiting spots for the sunrise. These circles, oriented towards the rising sun, further emphasize the site's spiritual significance. It's easy to see why Choquesuysuy is considered a vital part of the Inca purification trail, a necessary step to cleanse the spirit before reaching Machu Picchu.

For lunch, I stopped at Inti House. The flavors and traditional techniques of Peruvian cuisine were on full display, with a modern twist. The chefs use locally-sourced ingredients to create mouthwatering dishes. The restaurant's warm and inviting atmosphere added to the experience.

As the day drew to a close, I headed to KUSYKAY Peruvian Craft Food for dinner. This restaurant is known for showcasing the flavors and techniques of Peruvian cuisine with a modern twist. The skilled chefs use local ingredients to create mouthwatering dishes that capture the essence of the region's gastronomic culture. From classic ceviche to innovative fusion creations, KUSYKAY provides a memorable dining experience. I savored every bite, reflecting on the incredible journey through history I had experienced today. The staff were friendly and hospitable, even offering complimentary teas for altitude sickness. The atmosphere was trendy yet welcoming, making me feel right at home.

Finally, I decided to unwind at Cholos Brewpub. This cozy spot offers a wide selection of Peruvian craft beers, making it a perfect place to relax and meet fellow travelers. The vintage European biercafe decor created a warm and inviting atmosphere. Although some reviewers have noted inconsistencies in service, I found the staff to be friendly and the beer selection to be impressive. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with exploration and discovery.

The weather today was typical for August on the Choquequirao Trek. During the day, temperatures ranged from cool to mild, with clear skies providing magnificent mountain views. As the sun set, the temperature dropped considerably, reminding me to pack extra layers for the night.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore more of Choquequirao with Choquequirao Expeditions and visit the Pumamarca Ruins. I’m looking forward to uncovering more secrets of this ancient land. I also plan on visiting TEXTILES POMATAYLLA to find some local textiles.
