Cultural Immersion in Historic Kyoto
Day 5: Kyoto's Timeless Charm: A Day of Temples, Tradition, and Twilight Delights
Immerse yourself in Kyoto's ancient beauty with visits to Kiyomizu-dera, Ninenzaka, and Yasaka Shrine, followed by exquisite dining.
A Day of Ancient Wonders
Today was a day of stepping back in time, a journey through the heart of ancient Kyoto. From the serene heights of Kiyomizu-dera to the bustling streets of Ninenzaka and the vibrant Yasaka Shrine, every moment was filled with the beauty and history that makes this city so captivating. And to cap it all off, an evening of culinary delights that truly elevated the experience. It's days like these that remind me why I love to travel, to explore, and to share these moments with my family.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Kikuichimonjushirokanenaga honten. It was a traditional Japanese breakfast, and even Lila enjoyed the new tastes and flavors of the food. I found myself reflecting on my own childhood in Thailand, where mornings always started with the comforting aromas of home-cooked meals. It's funny how food can transport you back in time and across continents.
After breakfast, we made our way to Kiyomizu-dera, one of Kyoto's most celebrated temples. The crisp January air was invigorating as we ascended the winding path leading to the temple grounds. The temple, founded in 780, stands proudly on the site of the Otowa Waterfall, its name literally meaning 'Pure Water Temple'. Even in the winter, the beauty of the surrounding hills was undeniable. Greta, with her historian's eye, was particularly fascinated by the temple's history, from its association with the Hosso sect to its establishment as the head temple of the Kita Hosso sect in 1965.

The wooden stage of Kiyomizu-dera, jutting out 13 meters above the hillside, offered a breathtaking panoramic view of Kyoto. I could only imagine how spectacular it must be during the cherry blossom season in spring or when the maple trees erupt in a sea of color in the fall. Lila was captivated by the three-storied Koyasu Pagoda, learning that a visit is said to bring about an easy and safe childbirth. Perhaps something for the future, I thought with a smile.
We also visited Jishu Shrine, dedicated to the deity of love and matchmaking. I couldn't help but chuckle, remembering my own clumsy attempts at romance before I met Greta. It's funny how life can surprise you when you least expect it.
Sometimes, the most beautiful discoveries are found not in grand monuments, but in the quiet corners of a city, where history whispers and culture thrives.
Next on our itinerary was Ninenzaka, a charming, gently sloping street that transports you back to ancient Kyoto. Established during the Heian period (794-1185), this street was originally built to facilitate access to Kiyomizu-dera Temple. As we strolled along the cobblestone path, lined with traditional wooden machiya houses, teahouses, and artisan shops, we felt like we had stepped into a living museum.

Lila was particularly fascinated by the legend that those who stumble on Ninenzaka will face bad luck for two years. She made sure to tread carefully, her little eyes wide with a mix of excitement and apprehension. We explored the various shops, admiring the exquisite Kiyomizu-yaki pottery and the handcrafted souvenirs. I even picked up a small, intricately painted tea set for Greta, knowing how much she appreciates the art of tea.
As we continued our walk, we reached Yasaka Shrine, a vibrant and colorful Shinto shrine with a history dating back to 656. The shrine is dedicated to Susanoo-no-Mikoto, a great god of storms and sea in Japanese mythology, along with his wife Kushiinada-hime and their eight children. The street-facing two-storied vermilion gate is a district landmark, and the shrine itself is a popular spot for both tourists and locals.

We learned that Yasaka Shrine plays a central role in the Gion Festival, one of Japan's most famous traditional festivals. It was fascinating to imagine the shrine bustling with activity during the festival, with its vibrant processions and lively atmosphere. We took a moment to appreciate the serene beauty of the shrine, offering a silent prayer for good health and happiness for our family.
For lunch, we ventured to Pound Sanjo-Kiyamachi. The restaurant is located along the Takase River, and offers a relaxed atmosphere. All seats are counter seats, allowing you to see the cooking techniques performed by the chef. Greta and I enjoyed the Kobe beef, while Lila had a simpler dish that was more to her liking. It was a delightful culinary experience, and a welcome break after a day of exploring.

As evening approached, we prepared for our special dinner at French Dining Top of Kyoto. Located on the 14th floor of the Rihga Royal Hotel Kyoto, this revolving restaurant offered panoramic views of the city. It was the perfect setting for a memorable evening with my family.

The restaurant's interior was adorned with handmade karakami (woodblock printed designs) by Kira Karacho, an artisan atelier in business since 1624. The elegant bespoke chargers and the superb wine list added to the sophisticated ambiance. As the restaurant slowly revolved, we marveled at Kyoto's historic skyline and the surrounding mountains. Maps of famous landmarks were thoughtfully provided, allowing us to identify the various points of interest.
The French cuisine was exquisite, each dish a work of art in itself. Greta, with her refined palate, appreciated the classic offerings from the chef's menu. Lila, surprisingly, was adventurous, trying new flavors and textures with an open mind. It was heartwarming to see her embrace the culinary experience with such enthusiasm. The staff were friendly and attentive, making us feel welcome and pampered. It was an evening of fine dining and breathtaking views, a perfect way to celebrate our time in Kyoto.
To bring the day to a close, I decided to check out Bar K6. While Greta and Lila headed back to the hotel to rest, I figured I could try a local bar. The bar had an impressive selection of spirits and the bartenders knew their stuff. It was a great way to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. I even struck up a conversation with a local, learning more about Kyoto's history and culture.
