Day 10: A Day of Art, Parks, and Medina Magic in Tetouan
Explore Tetouan's cultural heart: modern art, tranquil parks, and the enchanting old Medina. A day of Moroccan discoveries with friends.
Tetouan's Treasures Unveiled
Today’s adventure took us from the artistic expressions of modern Morocco to the serene landscapes of Tetouan's parks and the captivating history within its ancient Medina. It was a day of contrasts, blending the contemporary with the traditional, and offering a deeper understanding of this region's rich cultural tapestry. Join me as I share the highlights of our exploration, the flavors we savored, and the moments that made this day truly special.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Toda Creperie & Ice Cream. It's a charming spot, and I decided to go for a savory crepe filled with cheese and eggs, while my friends opted for the sweeter Nutella and banana. Fueled up, we set off to explore Tetouan. Greta would have loved this place, she has such a sweet tooth. Lila too!

A Morning of Modern Art
Our first stop was the Tetouan Modern Art Center. As an English teacher, I always appreciate opportunities to expose myself to different forms of expression, and this center was a fantastic introduction to Moroccan contemporary art. The center is housed in what used to be a train station, a blend of Moroccan design and modern minimalism. The exhibits featured a range of mediums, from paintings and sculptures to multimedia installations. It was interesting to see how local artists are interpreting their heritage and experiences through a modern lens. I was particularly drawn to a series of abstract paintings that seemed to capture the vibrant colors of Chefchaouen in a completely new way. I even picked up a small print at the gift shop to remind me of the experience. It's a place I think would inspire my students back in Berlin, offering them a glimpse into a different world of creativity. The Tetouan Modern Art Center is a cultural gem that celebrates the brilliance of contemporary art.

Tranquility in Feddan Park
After immersing ourselves in art, we sought a change of pace at Feddan Park. This green space provided a welcome respite from the bustling city streets. The park is well-maintained with lovely gardens and shaded benches, perfect for a bit of relaxation. We took a leisurely stroll, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and the sight of locals going about their day. It was a great spot for people-watching; families were picnicking, children were playing, and couples were enjoying quiet moments together. Feddan Park is not just a green park but a complete pedestrian zone that encounters mainly locals enjoying social time. I found a bench overlooking the Medina and spent some time sketching in my travel journal. The views of the white buildings against the backdrop of the mountains were simply stunning. It was a perfect reminder to slow down and appreciate the simple beauty around us. Greta would have loved sketching here.

Exploring Tetouan's Old Medina Map
Next on our itinerary was a visit to Tetouan's old Medina. Before diving in, we took a look at the Medina map to get our bearings. The Medina of Tetouan developed on the steep slopes of the Jebel Dersa. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a maze of narrow streets, historic buildings, and bustling souks. As we wandered through the labyrinthine alleyways, we were transported back in time. The architecture, with its Andalusian influences, was fascinating. The Medina was rebuilt by Andalusian refugees who had been expelled by the Spanish. Every corner revealed something new, from intricately carved doors to colorful displays of spices and handicrafts. The air was filled with the sounds of vendors hawking their wares and the aroma of traditional Moroccan cuisine. While exploring the medina, finding Bab Ssour was a pleasant discovery. The staff were notably friendly. The Medina of Tetouan is located in the hills above the Straits of Gibraltar. I found myself particularly drawn to the leather dying pits, a traditional craft that has been practiced here for centuries. Of course, I couldn't resist picking up a few souvenirs – a hand-painted ceramic bowl and a beautifully embroidered scarf. It was easy to get lost in the Medina, but that was part of the fun. Tetouan’s old Medina is one of the most beautiful in Morocco.

A Culinary Journey
For lunch, we stopped at Café Restaurant Marisco Twins. We enjoyed the sights of Place Outa el Hammam & Kasbah. This family-friendly restaurant is great for watching the comings and goings of the medina. The restaurant is known for Moroccan cuisine. I opted for the lamb tagine, a slow-cooked stew with tender meat, vegetables, and aromatic spices. It was absolutely delicious and the perfect way to refuel after our Medina exploration. My friends tried the couscous and a seafood platter, both of which were equally satisfying. The staff was friendly and the service was quick, making it a pleasant dining experience. The Medina’s vibrant blue hues created a stunning backdrop as we enjoyed our meal.

Evening Delights
As evening approached, we made our way to Cafetería Lhawta for a relaxing drink. This cozy spot offered a peaceful atmosphere and a chance to reflect on our day. I ordered a traditional Moroccan mint tea, while my friends enjoyed some fresh juice. The staff is competent. The peaceful atmosphere meets you at this spot. It was the perfect way to unwind and savor the last moments of our Tetouan adventure. The waiters offer good coffee. The Cafétéria Lhawta has a beautiful view.

For dinner, we chose Restaurant Bab Ssour. This restaurant is one of the most famous in Chefchaouen. The food was very good. The atmosphere felt warm and inviting. I decided to try the goat tagine, which was tender and flavorful. My friends tried the lentil soup and Moroccan mint tea. The staff were friendly and attentive, making us feel right at home. The restaurant offers all its delicious dishes inside traditional Moroccan dishes with beautiful decorations. It was the perfect ending to a day filled with art, culture, and culinary delights. For those seeking good, authentic Moroccan food served by welcoming staff who make you comfortable, Bab Ssour is a solid choice.
