Finding the Heart of the Blue Pearl

Today was all about embracing the vibrant heart of Chefchaouen. After spending several days wandering through its mesmerizing blue alleys, I felt it was time to delve deeper into the local culture and discover the hidden gems that make this city so unique. I was excited to explore the landmarks and immerse myself in the daily life of the Chaouenis.

The day began with a hearty Moroccan breakfast at Restaurant Chourafa. The cozy atmosphere and the aroma of freshly baked bread and mint tea set the perfect tone for the day. I opted for a traditional tagine with eggs and khobz, a local bread, which was absolutely delicious. The staff were incredibly welcoming, making me feel right at home. It's moments like these that remind me why I love traveling – the chance to connect with people and experience their culture firsthand. I made sure to try their signature tagine, as recommended by the staff.

With a full stomach and a sense of adventure, I set out with my friends to explore Bab Chaouen. This iconic gate marks one of the main entrances to the old city, and it was bustling with activity. Locals and tourists alike were passing through, creating a vibrant atmosphere. The architecture around Bab Chaouen is stunning, with intricate details and of course, the signature blue hues that define Chefchaouen. It was a great spot for taking photos and soaking in the city's charm. The temperature was already climbing, typical for August in Chefchaouen, where the highs can reach up to 35°C. I was glad I remembered to pack my sunscreen and hat! I did forget my travel pillow, though. I´ll need to remember to buy one.

The beauty of Chefchaouen lies not just in its blue walls, but in the warmth and authenticity of its people.

Next on the itinerary was Jamaa, also known as the Grand Mosque. Located near the Kasbah in Plaza Uta el-Hammam, this mosque is one of the oldest and most important religious sites in Chefchaouen. It was founded by Moulay 'Ali ibn Rashid al-Alami, the founder of the city, though the exact date is debated among historians. The mosque's minaret, with its unique octagonal shape, is believed to date back to the late 17th century. Although non-Muslims are not allowed to enter, I admired its architecture from the outside and took in the peaceful atmosphere of the surrounding square.

Afterward, we decided to indulge in some retail therapy at CHAOUEN GIFTS. This charming shop is a treasure trove of local handicrafts, from handwoven textiles to beautifully crafted pottery. I was particularly drawn to the colorful array of Berber rugs and the intricate designs of the blue pottery. The staff were incredibly friendly and shared stories about the artisans behind the products. I ended up buying a beautiful handwoven blanket as a souvenir for Greta and Lila, hoping they will like it. I haggled a bit, as is customary in Moroccan markets, and managed to get a good deal.

For lunch, we headed to Moulay Ali Ben Rached, a restaurant recommended for its authentic Moroccan cuisine. Named after the founder of Chefchaouen, this restaurant offers a delightful menu featuring traditional dishes like tagine, couscous, and grilled meats. I opted for the seafood tagine, which was bursting with flavor. My friends tried the couscous with vegetables and the grilled lamb, and we all agreed that the food was exceptional. The restaurant also boasts a lovely view, adding to the overall dining experience.

As the afternoon wore on, we continued our exploration of the medina, getting lost in its labyrinthine alleys and soaking in the atmosphere. The blue-washed walls provided a stunning backdrop for our wanderings, and every corner revealed a new photo opportunity. We stumbled upon hidden courtyards, vibrant markets, and friendly locals, each encounter adding to the richness of our experience.

Dinner was at Restaurant Jbaria, another highly recommended spot in Chefchaouen. This restaurant is known for its authentic Moroccan dishes and reasonable prices. We started with a selection of Moroccan salads, followed by a hearty couscous dish. The flavors were rich and complex, and the portions were generous. The restaurant also has a lovely terrace, offering panoramic views of the city. It was the perfect place to end our day, savoring delicious food and reflecting on our adventures.

As I sit here writing this, I can't help but feel grateful for the experiences I've had today. Chefchaouen has a way of captivating you with its beauty and charm, and I'm so glad I had the opportunity to explore its heart and soul. Tomorrow, we plan to visit El Mellah and Rue Ibn Asskar, further exploring the rich history and culture of this enchanting city. I am already looking forward to discovering more hidden gems and creating lasting memories with my friends. And perhaps enjoy a drink at Café Mundial [Café Mundial].

The International Festival of Environmental Films of Chefchaouen is coming up in September. It would be great to come back and attend! Also, I read that traditional music is very much a part of everyday life in Morocco, especially in August when weddings are common. I haven't seen any weddings yet, but I'll keep an eye out!

Chefchaouen continues to surprise and delight. I am eager to see what tomorrow brings.
