Jaipur's Heights: A Day of Forts, Wax, and Rooftop Bliss
Today was all about seeing Jaipur from a different perspective – from the heights of its forts and the vibrant atmosphere of its rooftop restaurants. It's amazing how a change in elevation can offer a fresh appreciation for a city, revealing hidden details and breathtaking panoramas. I was eager to explore Nahargarh Fort, a place I had read so much about, and experience the Jaipur Wax Museum Nahargarh Fort nestled within its walls. With Greta and Lila by my side, I knew we were in for a day filled with wonder and delightful discoveries.
Our day began, as most good days do, with a hearty breakfast. We headed to Okra at the Jaipur Marriott Hotel. The buffet was impressive, a delightful mix of Indian and Continental dishes. Lila, of course, made a beeline for the pastries, while Greta and I enjoyed some spicy South Indian fare. It’s always a pleasure starting the day with such a variety, ensuring everyone finds something they love. I must say, the Masala Tea was particularly good, just the right amount of spice to wake you up.
Fueled up and ready, we set off for Nahargarh Fort. The drive up the Aravalli Hills was an adventure in itself, with winding roads offering glimpses of the city below. As we approached the fort, its imposing walls seemed to rise out of the very landscape, a testament to the architectural prowess of the past. Built in 1734 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, Nahargarh, originally known as Sudarshangarh, was conceived as a retreat and a crucial defense structure for Jaipur. Legend says it was renamed Nahargarh, meaning Abode of Tigers, after a local spirit, Nahar Singh Bhomia, who was believed to haunt the area during its construction.
Stepping inside, I could immediately feel the history seeping from the very stones. The fort's architecture is a captivating blend of Indian and European styles, showcasing ornate decorations, intricate carvings, and vibrant frescoes. The views from the ramparts were simply stunning, offering a panoramic sweep of Jaipur's pink cityscape. Lila was especially excited, pointing out landmarks we had already visited and spotting new ones in the distance.
Sometimes, the best way to understand a place is to see it from above, gaining a new perspective on its history, its beauty, and its vibrant life.
One of the highlights of Nahargarh Fort was undoubtedly the Jaipur Wax Museum. It felt a little surreal to encounter lifelike wax statues of famous personalities within the walls of such a historic fort. The museum is divided into different sections, each offering a unique experience. The Hall of Icons featured figures like Mahatma Gandhi, Amitabh Bachchan, and Albert Einstein, while the Royal Darbar showcased the Maharajas and Maharanis of Jaipur. Lila was particularly fascinated by the Sheesh Mahal, a stunning mirror palace within the museum, where millions of tiny mirrors created a dazzling display of light and reflection. It was truly a sight to behold, a testament to the artistic brilliance of Rajasthan. The Jaipur Wax Museum is the first wax museum in the world housed in a heritage site.
After the Wax Museum, we explored another fascinating aspect of Nahargarh Fort: its step well. This ancient water conservation system was a marvel of engineering, designed to collect and store rainwater for use by the fort's inhabitants. Descending the steps, I couldn't help but admire the ingenuity of the builders who had created such a functional and beautiful structure. The step well provided a cool, tranquil escape from the heat of the day, a reminder of the importance of water in this arid region. I read somewhere that the well receives water from the catchment in the surrounding hills and rainwater harvested from the fort complex using a network of closed catchments that connect through small canals and aqueducts.
By lunchtime, we were ready for a change of scenery and a delicious meal. We headed back down the hill and made our way to PESHAWRI at the ITC Rajputana Hotel. This restaurant is renowned for its North-West Frontier cuisine, and it certainly lived up to its reputation. The ambiance was rustic and inviting, with stone-clad walls and a cozy seating arrangement. We ordered a selection of their signature dishes, including the Dal Bukhara, Murgh Malai Kebab, and Sikandari Raan. The food was rich, flavorful, and incredibly satisfying. Even Lila, who can be a picky eater, devoured the Murgh Malai Kebab. It was a truly memorable dining experience, a perfect complement to our morning of exploration.
As the day drew to a close, we decided to treat ourselves to dinner at the Moon Light Rooftop Restaurant. Perched atop a building in Jaipur, this restaurant offered stunning views of the city skyline. The atmosphere was relaxed and romantic, with soft lighting and gentle music creating a magical ambiance. We ordered a variety of dishes from the vegetarian menu, savoring each bite as we watched the sun set over the Pink City. It was a perfect way to end a perfect day, sharing good food and good company with my loved ones.
Before heading back to Hotel Kalyan, we made a quick stop at The Forresta Kitchen & Bar for a nightcap. This forest-themed bar was a refreshing change of pace, with lush greenery and a serene ambiance. We enjoyed a couple of cocktails, soaking in the relaxed atmosphere before calling it a night. The Forresta Kitchen & Bar has always been conscious about offering an impeccable fine dining experience amidst nature's bounty.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Galta Ji Temple, Sisodia Rani ka Bagh, and Gaitore Ki Chhatriyan. I'm particularly excited about visiting the Galta Ji Temple, with its unique architecture and playful monkeys. I'm also looking forward to taking Lila shopping at Bapu Bazaar; hopefully, we can find some beautiful textiles and handicrafts to take back to Berlin. It’s hard to believe we're already on Day 5 of our Jaipur adventure. Time really does fly when you're having fun!
