Solo Sojourn in Gros Morne: A Journey into Nature
Day 7: Chasing Sunsets and Serenity: A Day of Coastal Charms in Gros Morne
Discover the tranquil beauty of Shallow Bay and the cultural richness of Cow Head in Gros Morne National Park. A solo traveler's reflection.
Coastal Calm and Cultural Finds
Today was a day of gentle exploration, a soothing balm for the soul amidst the rugged beauty of Gros Morne. I traded the demanding trails for the tranquil embrace of the coast, seeking out the stories whispered by the wind and waves. It's days like these, where the rhythm slows and the heart opens, that remind me why I set out on this solo journey in the first place.
My morning began in Cow Head, a charming town that exudes a sense of community and history. I treated myself to breakfast at The Old Store Cafe, a cozy spot that seems to be a local favorite. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee filled the air, mingling with the sweet scent of homemade pastries. I opted for a hearty breakfast sandwich and a strong coffee, fueling up for the day's adventures. It was a delightful way to start the day, surrounded by friendly faces and the promise of local flavors.
As I savored my breakfast, I couldn't help but overhear snippets of conversations – locals catching up on the latest news, fishermen discussing the day's catch, and tourists excitedly planning their excursions. It struck me how much these small towns are the lifeblood of the park, offering a glimpse into the authentic Newfoundland culture. It reminded me of the vibrant markets back in Lampang, where the community gathers to share stories and sustenance.
With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set off for Shallow Bay Beach. The drive itself was a treat, with the landscape unfolding in a tapestry of colors – the deep blue of the ocean, the golden hues of the sand dunes, and the vibrant greens of the coastal vegetation. October paints a unique picture here, a blend of late summer warmth and the first whispers of autumn.
Shallow Bay Beach lived up to its name, with its gently sloping shoreline and calm waters. I strolled along the beach, feeling the soft sand between my toes and breathing in the crisp sea air. The beach seemed to stretch on forever, offering endless opportunities for exploration and reflection. I watched as seabirds soared overhead, their calls echoing in the stillness of the morning. It was a scene of perfect tranquility, a world away from the hustle and bustle of Berlin.

I spent a good part of the morning simply sitting on the beach, lost in thought and наблюдение. The gentle sound of the waves lapping against the shore was incredibly soothing, washing away any lingering stress or worries. I closed my eyes and imagined Greta and Lila here with me, building sandcastles and chasing the waves. I made a mental note to bring them here someday, to share this special place with my family.
Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found not in conquering peaks, but in surrendering to the simple beauty of a quiet day.
As lunchtime approached, I drove back to Cow Head for a bite at Earle's Restaurant. The restaurant was bustling with activity, filled with locals and tourists alike. I ordered a classic Newfoundland dish – fish and chips – and savored every bite. The fish was fresh and flaky, and the chips were perfectly crispy. It was a comforting and satisfying meal, a true taste of Newfoundland cuisine.
After lunch, I decided to delve a little deeper into the local culture. I made my way to Under the Stump, a place I'd heard offers unique tours that blend storytelling with insights into the region's history and indigenous culture. I was intrigued by the prospect of learning more about the area's heritage and traditions. Although I didn't take a full tour this time, I spent some time chatting with the owners, Trina and Perry, who shared fascinating stories about the area's past and the challenges faced by its people.

They spoke passionately about the importance of preserving their cultural heritage and sharing it with visitors. Trina mentioned their walking tour through Bakers Brook, which tells the story of Rita Rideout and her family, including mussel picking. It sounded like an immersive experience, one that I'll definitely consider for a future visit.
I learned about the relocation program that affected many small communities in Newfoundland, forcing people to leave their homes and livelihoods. It was a poignant reminder of the human cost of progress and the importance of remembering the past. Their commitment to sustainable ecotourism also impressed me. It's heartening to see businesses that prioritize the well-being of the environment and the local community.
Before heading back, I stopped by Whale Tale Treasures, a local shop that showcases the work of talented artisans. I browsed through the displays of handcrafted jewelry, pottery, and artwork, admiring the skill and creativity of the local artists. I picked up a small, hand-carved wooden whale as a souvenir, a reminder of my time in Gros Morne and the beauty of the natural world. I thought it would be a nice addition to Lila's collection of animal figurines.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to The Black Spruce Restaurant for dinner. Nestled in Norris Point, the restaurant offered stunning views of Bonne Bay and the surrounding mountains. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the menu featured a range of locally sourced dishes. I decided to treat myself to a seafood dinner, savoring the flavors of fresh cod, mussels, and lobster. It was a fitting end to a day of coastal exploration and cultural immersion.

The Black Spruce prides itself on using local ingredients and supporting sustainable practices. It's a philosophy that resonates with me, as I believe that travel should be about more than just seeing new places – it should also be about supporting the local economy and respecting the environment. As I enjoyed my meal, I reflected on the day's experiences and felt grateful for the opportunity to explore this beautiful corner of the world.
Tomorrow, I plan to explore Gros Morne Adventures and the Captain James Cook National Historic Site, delving further into the park's natural and historical treasures. I'm also looking forward to trying out Java Jack's Restaurant & Gallery for dinner, and perhaps unwinding at the Merchant Warehouse Retro Cafe & Wine Bar. It promises to be another day filled with discovery and adventure.
Back at my campsite, as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and purple, I felt a deep sense of contentment. Today was a reminder that travel is not just about ticking off destinations on a list, but about connecting with people, experiencing new cultures, and finding moments of peace and reflection. It's about slowing down, opening your heart, and allowing yourself to be transformed by the beauty of the world around you.
I am glad that I decided to leave the insect repellent back at home, as the bugs were not as bad as I expected. However, I do regret forgetting my portable phone charger, as I had to be very mindful of my phone usage today, to make sure that I would have enough battery to call Greta tonight.
As I drifted off to sleep, I felt a sense of gratitude for this solo journey and the opportunity to reconnect with nature and myself. Gros Morne has a way of working its magic, reminding you of what truly matters in life – the simple joys of nature, the warmth of human connection, and the power of self-discovery.
I am also reminded of the Gros Morne Fall Festival, which is held annually in September. I wish my trip was a little earlier so that I could have enjoyed the festivities. Perhaps next time I will plan my trip accordingly. Until then, I will keep exploring and sharing my experiences with you all.
