A Day of Discoveries
Today was all about immersing myself in the raw, untouched beauty of Gros Morne National Park. I set out to explore trails that promised both a refreshing encounter with cascading waters and breathtaking panoramic views. With my camera in hand and a heart full of anticipation, I embarked on a journey that would etch itself into my memory, reminding me of the simple joys of solo travel and the profound connection one can forge with nature.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Jackie's Takeout in Rocky Harbour. I grabbed a coffee and a breakfast sandwich to fuel up for my morning hike. As I enjoyed my meal, I planned out my day, excited for the adventures that lay ahead.

Baker's Brook Falls: A Symphony of Water and Forest

The first stop on my itinerary was Baker's Brook Falls. The trailhead was conveniently located near the Berry Hill Campground, a short drive from Rocky Harbour. The crisp morning air was invigorating as I set off on the 10-kilometer trail, eager to witness the cascading waterfalls I had read so much about. The trail meandered through a balsam fir forest, showcasing nature's artistry through various stages of regeneration. I couldn't help but notice the effects of wind, insects, and even the impact of moose browsing on the vegetation.

Along the path, I encountered a 'moose ex-closure,' which offered a stark contrast between the vegetation inside and outside the protected area. It was fascinating to observe how the absence of moose grazing allowed for more robust regrowth. As I continued my trek, the sounds of rushing water grew louder, heightening my anticipation. The trail led me to the riverside, where I followed it downstream to a viewpoint overlooking a wide, staircase-like waterfall.

The sight was simply mesmerizing. The water cascaded over limestone ridges, creating a symphony of sound and motion. I spent a considerable amount of time here, capturing the beauty of the falls from various angles. The interplay of light and shadow, the mist in the air, and the sheer power of the water created an unforgettable sensory experience. The falls are the main attraction of this trail, rivaled by a profusion of spring and summer wildflowers in the bog and forest. I can only imagine how beautiful it is during those seasons.

Nature's beauty is a gift that we must cherish and protect, for it holds the power to inspire, heal, and connect us to something greater than ourselves.

As I hiked, I couldn't help but think of Greta and Lila. They would have loved this trail. Lila would have been fascinated by the moose ex-closure, and Greta would have appreciated the tranquility of the forest. Perhaps one day, I'll bring them here to experience this natural wonder together.

Lookout Hills Trail: A Panoramic Feast for the Eyes

After my refreshing encounter with Baker's Brook Falls, I drove to Woody Point to tackle the Lookout Hills Trail. This trail promised a panoramic vista of Bonne Bay, Gros Morne Mountain, the Tablelands, and the Lookout Hills themselves. The trailhead was conveniently located in the Discovery Centre parking lot.

The 5-kilometer trail began with a steady climb through the forest. The ascent was challenging, but the thought of the stunning views that awaited me at the summit kept me motivated. As I emerged from the trees, I found myself on a highland plateau. From the platform atop Partridgeberry Hill, the panorama unfolded before my eyes.

Bonne Bay sparkled in the distance, Gros Morne Mountain stood tall and majestic, the Tablelands displayed their unique geological features, and the Lookout Hills completed the breathtaking landscape. I spent a long time at the summit, simply soaking in the view. It was a perfect spot for reflection, a moment to appreciate the grandeur of nature and the simple act of being present in the moment. It's a great spot for a photo or a picnic.

The Lookout Hills Trail really did live up to its name, providing one of the best panoramic vistas in the park. The climb was steep, but the reward was well worth the effort. I made sure to enjoy the views from behind the safety fences.

Culinary Delights and Evening Reflections

For lunch, I decided to try the Augustus Jane Inn, known for its fresh-air therapy and downtown location in Rocky Harbour. The Inn features oversized rooms and is within walking distance to all local amenities. After a satisfying lunch, I took some time to explore the town, soaking in the local atmosphere and browsing the shops.

As evening approached, I treated myself to dinner at the Sugar Hill Inn & Chanterelles Restaurant in Norris Point. This place is known for its top-notch dining experience and extensive wine selection. The warm hospitality and Chef Todd's personal attention made the experience even more special. I savored every bite of my meal, appreciating the flavors and the ambiance of the restaurant. The hotel itself is praised for its clean and beautiful rooms with modern amenities like air conditioning.

To cap off the day, I decided to visit Rudy's Gas Bar and Pub for a nightcap. Despite being attached to a gas station, this place had a surprisingly welcoming atmosphere. It was the perfect spot to unwind, reflect on my adventures, and mingle with the locals. Customers rave about the perfectly crisp fries and mouth-watering seafood chowder.

As I sipped my drink, I thought about tomorrow's itinerary. I'm planning to visit Shallow Bay Beach and explore Under the Stump. I'm also hoping to do some shopping at Whale Tale Treasures. It promises to be another day of exploration and discovery in this beautiful corner of Canada.

Today was a reminder of why I love solo travel. It's about embracing the unexpected, challenging myself physically and mentally, and forging a deeper connection with the world around me. Gros Morne National Park has a way of stripping away the unnecessary, leaving you with a sense of clarity and gratitude. And as I settle into my campsite tonight, I can't help but feel grateful for the experiences, the challenges, and the beauty that this park has offered me. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures, eager to uncover more of Gros Morne's hidden gems.

There's also the Gros Morne Fall Festival and Craft Fair in September, or the Sonic Harvest Sessions in Woody Point in October. Gros Morne is home to a vibrant mix of festivals and events that celebrate music, storytelling, theatre, and outdoor adventure.
