Finding Gros Morne's Hidden Treasures

Today was another incredible day in Gros Morne National Park, filled with unexpected discoveries and moments of pure joy. It's amazing how much this park continues to offer, even as I approach the end of my solo journey. The crisp October air and the vibrant fall colors set the perfect stage for today's adventures. I'm so excited to share all the details with you!

My day began with a hearty breakfast at The Cat Stop in Norris Point. I opted for a classic Newfoundland breakfast: toutons with molasses, a true taste of local flavor. It was the perfect fuel for the day ahead. As I enjoyed my meal, I planned the day's itinerary, excited about the possibilities that awaited. I made sure to charge my camera fully, not wanting to miss a single shot of today's adventure. I did forget my portable phone charger though, which I hope won't be an issue.

After breakfast, I headed to Gros Morne Adventures, eager to explore Bonne Bay. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, providing me with insights into the various tours they offered. I decided on a boat tour that promised stunning views of the coastline and a chance to spot local wildlife. The boat was comfortable, and the guide was knowledgeable, sharing fascinating stories about the area's history and ecology. The fresh sea air and the dramatic landscapes were invigorating. Although there were no whales frolicking in the bay, the scenery more than made up for it. I was particularly struck by the rugged cliffs and the crystal-clear water. It was a photographer's dream come true.

Sometimes, the most rewarding journeys are those where you stumble upon unexpected beauty and find yourself completely immersed in the present moment.

Next on the agenda was a visit to the Captain James Cook National Historic Site. Perched high above Corner Brook, the site offered panoramic views of the Bay of Islands and the Humber Arm. The statue of Captain Cook stood proudly, a reminder of his significant contributions to mapping the region. I spent some time reading the interpretive panels, learning about Cook's surveying techniques and his impact on Newfoundland's history. The views were simply breathtaking, and I captured numerous photos of the stunning landscape. As I stood there, I imagined what it must have been like for Cook, charting these waters centuries ago. I was also reminded of Greta and Lila, and how much they would have enjoyed this view. I made a mental note to bring them here someday.

For lunch, I decided to treat myself to a meal at the Oceans Room Restaurant. I had heard rave reviews about their seafood, and I was not disappointed. The restaurant had a sophisticated yet relaxed atmosphere, and the service was impeccable. I ordered the pan-fried cod, a local specialty, and it was cooked to perfection. The flavors were fresh and vibrant, a true celebration of Newfoundland's culinary heritage. I paired it with a glass of crisp white wine, savoring each bite as I looked out over the harbor. The restaurant was in the Gaslamp Quarter, and it was a great location to people-watch. It reminded me of the many restaurants Greta and I explored in Berlin.

As evening approached, I ventured to the Merchant Warehouse Retro Cafe & Wine Bar in Woody Point. This spot was highly recommended for its live music and retro vibe, and it did not disappoint. The cafe was located in a beautifully restored old warehouse, right on the water. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, with locals and tourists mingling and enjoying the music. I ordered a local craft beer and settled in to listen to a talented musician playing classic rock covers. The combination of good music, good beer, and the stunning waterfront view made for a perfect evening. The Merchant Warehouse is a great place to connect with the local people and their culture.

For dinner, I headed to Java Jack's Restaurant & Gallery. This quirky spot is known for its fresh seafood, wild game, and vegetarian options, all served with a side of local charm. The restaurant is located in a heritage house, adding to its unique appeal. I opted for the seafood stew, a hearty and flavorful dish that warmed me from the inside out. The restaurant also has a gallery, so I enjoyed browsing the local art while waiting for my meal. It was a perfect way to end a day filled with exploration and discovery.

The weather today was mostly pleasant, with a mix of sunshine and clouds. The temperature hovered around 9°C (48°F), making it ideal for outdoor activities. However, the wind picked up in the afternoon, reminding me that October in Newfoundland can be unpredictable. I was glad I had packed layers, allowing me to adjust to the changing conditions. As I reflect on the day, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and charm of Gros Morne National Park. Each day brings new adventures and new perspectives, and I am eager to see what tomorrow holds. Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Tablelands and The Arches Provincial Park. I've heard so much about these unique geological formations, and I can't wait to see them for myself.

Before heading back to my campsite, I made a quick stop at a local grocery store to pick up some essentials. I chatted with the friendly cashier, who shared some tips on the best hiking trails in the area. It's these small interactions that make traveling so rewarding, connecting with people and learning about their lives. I also made sure to purchase insect repellent, remembering that I had forgotten it at home. Hopefully, this will help me avoid any unwanted mosquito bites during my remaining nights in the park.

Back at the campsite, I sipped a cup of hot tea and wrote in my travel journal, capturing the highlights of the day. The stars twinkled above, and the sound of the wind in the trees created a soothing symphony. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day. This solo journey has been transformative, allowing me to reconnect with nature and with myself. I am grateful for the opportunity to explore Gros Morne National Park and to share my experiences with you. Goodnight from beautiful Newfoundland!

I am also excited for the Gros Morne Hiking Festival that will be held in September 12-18, 2025. I read that there'll be culinary events, hiking challenges, musical performances and special guests. There's also the Gros Morne Fall Festival & Craft Fair from September 18 - 21, with craftspeople, artisans, traditional singers, storytellers and naturalists.

And with that, I bid you goodnight. Until tomorrow!
