Woody Point Wonders
Today was a day of immersing myself in the heart of Gros Morne, a day dedicated to exploring the charming town of Woody Point. It’s amazing how much character and beauty can be packed into one small place. From delving into the park's history at the Discovery Centre, every moment felt like uncovering a new treasure. And of course, no day is complete without savoring the local flavors – a true treat for the senses.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at the Back Cove Café. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the promise of homestyle cooking was the perfect start. I opted for their highly recommended fish and chips, and I must say, the fish was incredibly fresh and the batter was light and crispy. It was a delightful way to fuel up for the day’s adventures. It reminded me of the small cafes back in Lampang, where simple, delicious food is made with love and care. It's funny how a familiar taste can transport you back home, even when you're miles away.
The beauty of travel lies not just in seeing new places, but in discovering new perspectives.
With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I headed to the Discovery Centre. This place is a treasure trove of information about Gros Morne National Park. The interactive exhibits provided a fascinating insight into the park's geology, ecology, and cultural history. I learned about the park's unique flora and fauna, and the forces that shaped its stunning landscapes. As an English teacher, I always appreciate a good learning experience, and the Discovery Centre certainly delivered. It’s a fantastic place to start any visit to Gros Morne, and I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to understand the significance of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Next on the itinerary was the iconic Woody Point Lighthouse. As I approached the lighthouse, I was struck by its simple elegance and its picturesque setting. Perched on a grassy knoll overlooking Bonne Bay, the lighthouse offered breathtaking views of the surrounding area. I took a leisurely stroll around the grounds, soaking in the peaceful atmosphere and the gentle sound of the waves. The lighthouse is a reminder of Newfoundland's maritime history and the importance of Woody Point as a center of commerce for the Northwest coast. It was fascinating to learn that the current lighthouse, constructed in 1959, replaced the original 1919 light. Standing there, I couldn't help but feel a sense of connection to the past and a deep appreciation for the enduring spirit of this coastal community.

After my lighthouse visit, I decided to explore the local shops. Island Treasures caught my eye with its promise of authentic Newfoundland souvenirs. Inside, I found a delightful array of locally made crafts, books, and treats. I picked up a few small gifts for Greta and Lila, wanting to bring a piece of Newfoundland back to Berlin with me. There was also the Seaside Gift Shop. It was a waterfront shop filled with local music, books, art, jewelry and clothing. I resisted the urge to buy everything in sight, reminding myself that I still had a few more days of travel ahead of me. It’s always a challenge to find the perfect balance between experiencing a place and bringing something tangible back home.

Lunch was at Neddies Harbour Inn. The restaurant served the freshest local ingredients. The views of the bay, the Long Range Mountains and the Tablelands were magnificent. I enjoyed a seafood dish, savoring the flavors of the Atlantic. It was a truly memorable meal, enhanced by the stunning scenery. It made me think about how much Greta would enjoy this view; I'll have to bring her here someday.

As the day drew to a close, I treated myself to dinner at the Ocean View Hotel. The Oceans Room offered panoramic views of the Rocky Harbour waterfront. I enjoyed a splendid sunset dinner, watching the coastline glisten in sync with the star-encrusted sky. The Ocean View also has live music. It was the perfect way to end a day of discovery, surrounded by good food, good music, and the beauty of Gros Morne. I savored some local seafood, reflecting on the day’s adventures and the unique charm of Woody Point.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore Baker's Brook Falls and the Lookout Hills Trail [see tomorrow's itinerary]. I'm looking forward to more hiking and more breathtaking views. I am still kicking myself for forgetting my portable phone charger. I will need to remember to buy one tomorrow. I am also going to make sure I have insect repellent.
Today was a reminder of why I love to travel – the joy of discovering new places, meeting new people, and experiencing new things. Woody Point, with its rich history, stunning scenery, and warm hospitality, has captured a piece of my heart. I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings.
And now, as the sun sets over Gros Morne, I’m filled with gratitude for this incredible experience. It’s moments like these that make all the planning and preparation worthwhile. Goodnight from Woody Point!
