Beacon of Beauty and Bountiful Trails

Today was a symphony of sights, sounds, and flavors, perfectly encapsulating the magic of Gros Morne National Park. From the serene embrace of a historic lighthouse to the invigorating challenge of a coastal trail, and the comforting warmth of Newfoundland cuisine, every moment was a brushstroke on the canvas of an unforgettable experience. It was a day where nature's grandeur met the simple pleasures of life, leaving me with a heart full of joy and a camera roll bursting with memories.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at The Old Loft Restaurant. Perched overlooking the scenic South Arm of Bonne Bay, the rustic charm of the place immediately transported me to another era. The restaurant, styled to reflect Newfoundland and Labrador's heritage, even had seats made of barrels, similar to those used to ship fish in the early years. I savored a traditional Newfoundland breakfast, fueling up for the day's adventures ahead. The view of Bonne Bay was simply breathtaking, the perfect start to a day of exploration. I made a mental note to bring Greta and Lila here someday; they would absolutely adore the cozy atmosphere and the stunning scenery.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set off for Lobster Cove Head Lighthouse. The drive itself was a treat, with panoramic views of the park's rugged coastline. As I approached the lighthouse, its white tower against the backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean was a sight to behold. I learned that it was first constructed in 1897 to guide ships safely through the waters of the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

Stepping inside the keeper's dwelling, now a park interpretive exhibit, I was immersed in the stories of the lightkeepers and their families. The exhibit showcased historical photos, audio recordings of folk songs, and even lightkeepers' logbooks, offering a glimpse into their lives. It was fascinating to learn about the challenges they faced, maintaining the light in all kinds of weather, ensuring the safety of those at sea. I could almost imagine the families gathered around the kitchen table, sharing stories and laughter, their lives intertwined with the rhythm of the sea. The small museum also had photos of the Royal Family and Joey Smallwood, Newfoundland's Premier when they joined Canada.

The best view comes after the hardest climb.

Outside, I strolled along the trails that wind through the coastal environment and tuckamore forests. The views were simply stunning, with the rugged coastline stretching out as far as the eye could see. I could see why Lobster Cove Head is known as the perfect spot to enjoy sunsets. Even though it was mid-morning, the play of light on the water was mesmerizing. I took a moment to simply breathe in the fresh sea air, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience such natural beauty.

Next on the agenda was the Green Gardens Trail. Located in the southern area of Gros Morne National Park, the drive there was scenic, passing through meadows and boreal forests. The trailhead was easy to find, and I set off with a sense of excitement, eager to discover the contrasting landscapes that awaited.

The trail began on the serpentine barrens of the Tablelands, a unique barren landscape that felt like another world. As I crested a ridge, the ocean views unfolded before me, a breathtaking panorama of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The trail then descended into a boreal forest, a welcome change of scenery as I made my way towards the coast.

The hike down to Old Man Cove was steep, but the views along the way were more than worth the effort. I passed through green garden meadows, a vibrant tapestry of wildflowers and lush vegetation. I even spotted some sheep grazing in the distance, a reminder of the area's history as a summer range for livestock.

Reaching the beach at Old Man Cove, I was greeted by the sight of pillow basalts, volcanic rocks formed by lava erupting from the ocean floor millions of years ago. Sea stacks and volcanic rock formations dotted the coastline, creating a dramatic and photogenic landscape. I spent some time exploring the shore, marveling at the power of nature and the beauty of the rugged coastline. I took a long break at the beach, simply soaking in the atmosphere and enjoying the solitude.

The hike back up was definitely a challenge, a strenuous climb that tested my endurance. But with each step, I was rewarded with stunning views and a sense of accomplishment. As I reached the trailhead, I felt a deep sense of satisfaction, grateful for the opportunity to experience such a diverse and rewarding hike.

With the hiking done, my thoughts turned to food. I headed to Fisherman's Landing Restaurant in Rocky Harbour for lunch. I decided to sit on the patio deck to enjoy the views of the harbour. I opted for a traditional Newfoundland meal, eager to sample the local flavors. The cod and chips were delicious, the fish fresh and flaky, the batter perfectly crispy. It was the perfect way to refuel after a day of exploration.

For dinner, I treated myself to a meal at Buoy & Arrow Restaurant and Suites. The restaurant is known for its diverse menu, featuring local seafood and wild game. I decided to try the lobster roll, a local favorite, and I wasn't disappointed. The lobster was fresh and succulent, the roll perfectly toasted, and the flavors were simply divine. The restaurant had a licensed patio where you could take in a gorgeous west coast sunset while you eat and drink with friends.

As the evening drew to a close, I decided to check out the local nightlife at Anchor Pub. Located in the Ocean View Hotel, this lively pub is a popular spot for live music and entertainment. I enjoyed a local Quidi Vidi specialty beer while listening to a local band, Anchors Aweigh. The atmosphere was electric, the music infectious, and I found myself tapping my feet and singing along with the crowd. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration, immersed in the local culture and enjoying the camaraderie of fellow travelers.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Discovery Centre and Woody Point Lighthouse. I'm also hoping to find some unique souvenirs at Island Treasures.

Back at my campsite, I reflected on the day's adventures. From the historic lighthouse to the challenging hike and the delicious meals, every moment was a testament to the beauty and charm of Gros Morne National Park. As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience such a special place, a place that had captured my heart and ignited my soul. It was a day I would cherish forever, a reminder of the power of nature and the simple joys of life.
