Traverse the Tablelands' unique terrain, conquer Gros Morne Mountain, and indulge in local seafood—an unforgettable day in Newfoundland.
Day 3: Walking on the Earth's Mantle & Feasting by the Sea
Today was a day of stark contrasts and incredible experiences. Gros Morne continues to surprise me with its diverse landscapes and culinary offerings. From hiking on terrain that feels like another planet to savoring the freshest seafood, it's a journey that stimulates all the senses.
My morning started with a hearty breakfast at The Cat Stop in Norris Point. I opted for their seafood chowder, which was creamy and packed with generous chunks of fish. Fuelled up, I set off for the Tablelands. The drive alone was worth the trip, the changing colors of the landscape in October were breathtaking.
Tablelands Trail: A Walk on Another Planet
The Tablelands Trail is unlike any hike I’ve ever experienced. As I approached the trailhead, the landscape transformed dramatically. Lush greenery gave way to an otherworldly expanse of reddish-brown rock, a stark contrast that felt almost surreal. It's no wonder people compare it to Mars.
This unique terrain is actually part of the Earth's upper mantle, pushed through the crust around 500 million years ago. Walking on it, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and wonder at the geological forces that shaped this place. The trail itself is relatively easy, a well-maintained path that meanders through this unusual landscape. I took the Serpentine Loop, a shorter detour that showcased the unique plant life adapted to the Tablelands' harsh conditions.

To walk on the Tablelands is to walk on a piece of Earth's history, a reminder of the powerful forces that have shaped our planet.
The views were panoramic, the barren landscape stretching out before me, meeting the sky in a seamless horizon. Despite the lack of lush vegetation, there was a stark beauty to the Tablelands, an almost meditative quality to the silence and solitude. I spent a couple of hours exploring the area, taking photos and simply soaking in the unique atmosphere. It was definitely a highlight of my trip so far.
Gros Morne Mountain: A Challenging Ascent
After the Tablelands, I decided to tackle the Gros Morne Mountain Hiking Trail. I knew this would be a more strenuous undertaking, but I was eager for the challenge. The trail is a 17-kilometer loop, known for its steep rocky sections and dramatic drop-offs.
The ascent was indeed challenging, but the views along the way were incredible. The trail winds through forests of changing colors, offering glimpses of Bonne Bay and the surrounding landscape. As I climbed higher, the trees thinned out, and I found myself scrambling over rocks, the wind picking up.
Reaching the summit was an exhilarating experience. The panoramic views were breathtaking, stretching out in all directions. I could see the Tablelands in the distance, as well as the coastline and the vast expanse of the national park. I spent some time at the top, catching my breath and taking in the scenery. It was a moment of quiet triumph, a reward for the hard work of the climb.

The descent was just as challenging as the ascent, requiring careful footing and a steady pace. By the time I reached the bottom, my legs were aching, but I felt a deep sense of satisfaction. I was glad I had my hiking boots, and I was also glad I had packed an extra layer of clothing, as the temperature at the summit was noticeably cooler.
A Culinary Reward: Seaside Restaurant in Trout River
After a day of hiking, I was ready for a hearty meal. I drove to Trout River, a charming fishing village known for its seafood. My destination was the Seaside Restaurant, recommended for its fresh catches and stunning ocean views.
The restaurant did not disappoint. I arrived just in time to catch the sunset, the sky ablaze with color as it dipped below the horizon. I ordered the pan-fried cod, a local specialty, and it was cooked to perfection. The fish was flaky and moist, served with a side of scrunchions, adding a delightful crunch. The restaurant itself was cozy and inviting, with nautical décor and friendly staff.

A Stop at the Treasure Box
Before heading back to my campsite, I made a quick stop at the Treasure Box in Rocky Harbour. This unique shop combines a café and a craft store, offering a variety of local souvenirs and handcrafted items. I picked up a small carving of a puffin as a memento of my trip. They also had some delicious-looking baked goods, but I resisted the temptation, still full from my seafood dinner. It's the perfect place to find a unique gift or simply browse local artistry.

Reflections on the Day
Today was a reminder of why I love to travel. The opportunity to experience such diverse landscapes in a single day, from the Martian-like Tablelands to the challenging heights of Gros Morne Mountain, is truly remarkable. And then to top it off with a delicious meal of local seafood, while watching the sunset over the ocean – it’s moments like these that make all the planning and effort worthwhile.
I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures, which will include a visit to the Lobster Cove Head Lighthouse and a hike on the Green Gardens Trail [see tomorrow's itinerary]. I'm also planning to check out the Anchor Pub for a taste of local nightlife. I should probably charge my portable phone charger tonight, I forgot to pack it!
Gros Morne continues to captivate me, and I can't wait to see what other wonders it has in store.
