Reaching New Heights on the Salkantay Trail

Today was a day of immense physical challenge and even greater reward. The Salkantay Trail tested my limits, pushing me to heights I never thought possible, both literally and figuratively. Surrounded by the awe-inspiring beauty of the Andes, every step was a testament to the power of nature and the resilience of the human spirit.

The day began with a hearty breakfast at Chef House Restaurant - Machu Picchu. I fuelled up with a mix of local and familiar dishes, knowing I needed all the energy I could get for the ascent ahead. The restaurant was bustling, and there was a palpable sense of excitement in the air, likely because of the live music. After breakfast, we set off towards Montańa Salkantay.

The initial part of the trek was relatively gentle, allowing us to warm up our muscles and acclimatize further to the altitude. The landscape was stunning, with snow-capped peaks in the distance and lush green valleys below. As we ascended, the air grew crisper, and the scenery became more dramatic. The trail wound its way through rocky terrain, and we had to navigate carefully to avoid slipping. I focused on my breathing, trying to maintain a steady rhythm, a tactic Greta taught me during our hikes in the Harz mountains.

Reaching Abra Salkantay, the highest point of the trek at over 4,600 meters (15,000 feet), was an emotional moment. The panoramic views were simply breathtaking. The imposing Montańa Salkantay stood proudly, its snow-covered peak piercing the sky. I felt a surge of accomplishment, knowing that we had conquered one of the most challenging parts of the trail. The wind was strong and bitingly cold, but the sheer beauty of the surroundings made it all worthwhile. I took a moment to reflect on the journey so far, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience such incredible landscapes with my friends. I even took a few photos, hoping they would somehow capture the grandeur of the moment.

The mountains are calling and I must go.

The descent from Abra Salkantay was no less challenging, requiring careful footing and a focus on balance. My knees started to ache, and I was grateful for my hiking poles, which helped to alleviate some of the strain. We took several breaks along the way, resting and rehydrating, while taking in the views. I was mindful of the symptoms of altitude sickness and made sure to drink plenty of water and chew on coca leaves, a local remedy. I also remembered to pace myself, taking slow, deliberate steps to avoid any unnecessary exertion.
INKA TAMBO restaurant for a well-deserved meal. The food was delicious and comforting, providing a welcome energy boost. I opted for a traditional Peruvian dish, savoring the flavors and spices that are so unique to this region. The cozy atmosphere of the restaurant was also a welcome respite from the harsh conditions on the mountain.

As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves in a warmer, more sheltered valley. The vegetation became lusher, and the air was filled with the sound of birdsong. We made our way to El museo de la papa rest for dinner. I was intrigued by the name, and eager to sample some of the local potato varieties. The restaurant was charming, with a rustic decor and a friendly staff. The meal was both delicious and educational, as I learned about the different types of potatoes grown in the region and their culinary uses.

After dinner, we celebrated our successful day of trekking at LIMBUS RESTOBAR in Cusco. The bar had a lively atmosphere, with music and laughter filling the air. We enjoyed a few drinks, toasting to our accomplishments and sharing stories from the day. It was the perfect way to unwind and relax after such a physically demanding experience.

November in Cusco is quite special, with All Saints' Day and Day of the Dead celebrations creating a unique atmosphere. I learned that families visit cemeteries to honor their loved ones with flowers, candles, and traditional foods, blending Andean and Catholic traditions. Although we didn't visit any cemeteries today, it was interesting to learn about these customs and see how they are still practiced in modern-day Peru.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, I'm excited to explore Intimachay and the Temple of the Three Windows. I've heard that these are fascinating historical sites, and I'm eager to learn more about the Inca civilization. We'll start the day with breakfast at Restaurante Apu Salkantay and enjoy lunch at Julian Restaurant, before having dinner at Restaurant Turístico El Encanto Salkantay. I am also curious to see what Barroco Chill Restobar has to offer.

Despite the challenges of today's trek, I feel a deep sense of satisfaction and accomplishment. The Salkantay Trail is truly an incredible experience, offering a unique blend of natural beauty, physical challenge, and cultural immersion. I'm grateful for the opportunity to be here, and I'm looking forward to what tomorrow brings.

The weather in November on the Salkantay Trek can be unpredictable. Early in the month, there are still days with clear skies, but as the month progresses, afternoon showers become more frequent. Temperatures vary depending on altitude, with daytime temperatures averaging around 20°C (70°F) in high-altitude sections, but nights can drop close to or below 0°C (32°F). In lower areas, daytime temperatures can reach 26°C (80°F). It's important to be prepared for all types of weather, with a light rain jacket, warm clothing, and a good backpack cover.

One thing I've learned on this trip is the importance of being flexible and adaptable. Things don't always go according to plan, and it's important to be able to adjust to changing circumstances. Whether it's dealing with altitude sickness, unexpected weather, or simply a change in itinerary, being able to roll with the punches is essential for a successful and enjoyable trek.

I am also grateful for the companionship of my friends on this journey. Sharing this experience with them has made it even more special. We've supported each other through the tough times, celebrated our successes, and created memories that will last a lifetime. As I sit here writing this blog post, I can't help but smile, knowing that I am part of something truly extraordinary. This trip has been a reminder of the power of friendship, the beauty of nature, and the resilience of the human spirit.

I’m also starting to think about Greta and Lila back in Berlin. I miss our little family terribly, but I know that this adventure will make me a better person, and I’ll have so many stories to share with them when I return. Maybe one day, I’ll bring them back to Peru with me, so they can experience the magic of the Andes for themselves. For now, though, I’m content to soak up every moment of this incredible journey, knowing that I’m creating memories that will last a lifetime.

The trek has also reminded me of the importance of disconnecting from technology and connecting with nature. In our modern world, it's easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of daily life, constantly checking our phones and emails. But out here in the mountains, I've been able to escape from all of that and simply be present in the moment. It's been a refreshing and rejuvenating experience, and one that I will carry with me long after I return home. I think I might suggest a digital detox to Greta when I get back, perhaps a weekend in the Spreewald without any devices.

As I drifted off to sleep, I felt a profound sense of gratitude for the experiences of the day. The Salkantay Trail had challenged me, inspired me, and changed me in ways I couldn't have imagined. I knew that the journey was far from over, but I was ready for whatever lay ahead, eager to continue exploring the wonders of Peru and discovering more about myself along the way.
