Echoes of the Past
Today, the tenth day of our Peruvian adventure, felt like stepping directly into the heart of Inca history. After nine days of trekking the majestic Salkantay Trail, the ancient citadel of Machu Picchu was finally within our grasp. The crisp mountain air carried whispers of stories untold, and I was eager to listen. Leaving Berlin behind, with Greta and Lila in my thoughts, I felt a profound connection to this land and its people.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurante Apu Salkantay. The mix of traditional Peruvian flavors and familiar international dishes was the perfect fuel for the day ahead. Some reviews mentioned hit or miss experiences, but I found it delightful. The restaurant was bustling with fellow travelers, all buzzing with anticipation for what the day held. It reminded me of the diverse culinary scene back in Berlin, where you can find a taste of almost any culture.

With renewed energy, we set off to explore the famed Intimachay, a site I had eagerly anticipated. The allure of this hidden gem, often missed by the usual tourist crowds, was irresistible. Tucked away just below the main ruins, Intimachay, or the Cave of the Sun, was a serene escape. The single window in the eastern-facing wall offered a breathtaking view. I could only imagine how, during the Summer Solstice, the cave comes alive as the sunlight illuminates its deepest corners. It felt like a privilege to be in such a place, sensing the powerful energy that others had described.

The stones of Machu Picchu whisper stories of a civilization that understood the cosmos far better than we often give them credit for.
Next on our itinerary was the Temple of the Three Windows, a site steeped in mystery and symbolism. Positioned in the Hanan sector, the holiest part of Machu Picchu, the temple immediately struck me with its remarkable stonework. The three trapezoidal windows command attention, each perfectly aligned and facing east. It's believed that these windows represent the Inca tripartite cosmology – the Hanan-Pacha (the world of the gods), the Kay-Pacha (the world where humans live), and the Ukju-Pacha (the underworld). Standing there, I tried to imagine the religious ceremonies that once took place within those walls. I felt a sense of awe and respect for the Incas' deep understanding of the universe.

For lunch, we stopped at Julian Restaurant. It was a delightful experience. The restaurant served both Peruvian and international cuisine, so there was something for everyone. It was a welcome break to sit down and enjoy the flavors of the region.

As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves at Barroco Chill Restobar. Though I'm not typically one for late nights after a long day of hiking, the promise of live salsa music was too tempting to resist. The restobar had a lively atmosphere, and even though I'm no salsa dancer, I thoroughly enjoyed the music and the energy of the place. I even tried a cinnamon pisco sour, which was delicious!

Reflecting on the day, I am struck by the Incas' incredible ability to integrate their architecture with the natural landscape. Each stone, each window, each structure seemed to be placed with intention and purpose. It reminded me of the beautiful parks and gardens in Berlin, where nature and human design come together in harmony.
Tomorrow, we continue our exploration of Machu Picchu, venturing further into the Historic Sanctuary. I am particularly excited about experiencing more of the Salkantay Trail, and perhaps picking up a souvenir at Typical Peru Travel Craft SAC. But for now, I'll rest, and dream of the wonders yet to come. I miss Greta and Lila, and wish they could see this with me.
Before drifting off to sleep, I thought of my students back in Berlin. I realized that travel is the greatest teacher, offering lessons that no textbook can provide. I hope that through my blog, I can inspire them to explore the world and discover its many wonders.
And of course, I must remember to buy a portable phone charger and an extra pair of socks. It would be very useful for tomorrow!
We ended our day with dinner at Restaurant Turístico El Encanto Salkantay. It was the perfect way to wind down and reflect on the day's adventures.
