Discover the heart of Hoi An with a village experience, exploring ancient streets, and savoring local cuisine. A day of cultural immersion.
First Impressions: Hoi An's Warm Embrace
After a long journey from Dresden, I was eager to finally set foot in Hoi An, a city I've studied extensively in my role as a librarian specializing in Southeast Asian history and culture. The air here is thick with the scent of incense and the promise of adventure. The vibrant colors of the buildings and the friendly faces of the locals have already begun to weave their spell. I couldn't wait to dive into the experiences that awaited me on this first day of our cultural exploration with my friends.
The day began with a delightful breakfast at Bun Cha Ta Hoi An. It was a recommendation from a local, and it did not disappoint. The restaurant was bustling with activity, a mix of locals and tourists all eager to start their day with a taste of authentic Vietnamese cuisine. I opted for their signature *bun cha*, a flavorful dish of grilled pork served with vermicelli noodles, fresh herbs, and a tangy dipping sauce. It was my first time trying this Hanoi specialty, and the owner, Katy, was incredibly welcoming, guiding me through the proper way to enjoy it. The freshness of the ingredients and the explosion of flavors were the perfect way to kick off my Hoi An adventure. My friends and I enjoyed it while sitting on the side of the street, as the restaurant is located at the end of 'Coffee Street'.

With our appetites satisfied, we ventured into the Hoi An Village Experience. This immersive tour promised a glimpse into the rural life surrounding the ancient town, and it delivered in spades. We journeyed through lush rice paddies and encountered water buffaloes, their presence adding to the idyllic scenery. The experience was incredibly hands-on, and our guide was very knowledgeable, providing insights into the traditional farming practices that have sustained this region for centuries.

Travel is more than seeing sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.
Next, we were drawn to the allure of Phố cổ Hội An, the ancient town itself. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a mesmerizing tapestry of ornate Chinese temples, a Japanese-designed bridge, wooden shophouses, French colonial houses, and old canals. The streets were alive with activity, a vibrant mix of locals going about their daily lives and tourists eager to soak in the atmosphere. Every corner turned revealed a new photo opportunity, a new detail to admire.

As we wandered through the ancient streets, we stumbled upon Reaching Out Arts & Crafts, a shop with a mission close to my heart. This organization provides opportunities for people with disabilities to learn skills and gain meaningful employment. The shop was filled with beautiful handcrafted items, from delicate ceramics to intricate jewelry. Knowing that our purchases would directly support these artisans made the experience all the more meaningful. I picked up a few small gifts for Lara, my daughter, hoping to bring a piece of Hoi An's beauty back to Dresden for her.

Lunch beckoned, and we found ourselves at Secret Garden Hoi An. Tucked away in a quiet alley, this restaurant was a true oasis of tranquility. The architecture was incredibly charming, and the traditional atmosphere made us feel as though we had stepped back in time. We savored a variety of Vietnamese dishes, each bursting with fresh, local flavors. The *cao lầu*, a regional noodle specialty, was a particular highlight.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, we made our way to HOME Hoi An - HOME Vietnamese Restaurant for dinner. The restaurant is located in the city center and within walking distance of the Japanese bridge. The ambiance was warm and inviting, and the staff were incredibly friendly, making us feel right at home. The menu featured a range of Vietnamese classics, each prepared with care and attention to detail. It was a perfect end to a perfect day.

The weather in Hoi An today was warm and humid, with temperatures reaching a high of 88°F (31°C). It was the kind of weather that makes you want to slow down and savor every moment, which is exactly what we did. I was glad I had packed my sun hat and sunscreen, as the sun was quite strong.
One thing I did forget to pack was my portable phone charger, which proved to be a minor inconvenience. However, I quickly learned to adapt and conserve my phone's battery, relying more on my notebook for journaling and less on my phone for navigation. It was a good reminder to disconnect and be more present in the moment.
Looking ahead to tomorrow, I'm excited to explore more of Hoi An's cultural treasures. Our itinerary includes visits to the Diep Dong Nguyen House, the Rehahn Gallery, and the Nguyen Tuong Family Chapel. I'm also looking forward to enjoying breakfast at Nhan's Kitchen, lunch at Little Faifo Restaurant, and dinner at Mai Fish Restaurant. And perhaps, we'll end the day with a drink at The Shamrock Irish Pub Hoi An.
As I reflect on this first day, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and excitement. Hoi An has already exceeded my expectations, and I know that the days to come will be filled with even more unforgettable experiences. I am so glad that I decided to embark on this journey with my friends. Sharing these moments with them makes the experience all the more special. It reminds me of why I love to travel: to immerse myself in new cultures, to learn from the past, and to create memories that will last a lifetime.
Tomorrow, I plan to visit Diep Dong Nguyen House, Rehahn Gallery, and Nguyen Tuong Family Chapel, and perhaps enjoy a drink at The Shamrock Irish Pub Hoi An in the evening. I am also excited to try the local cuisine at Nhan's Kitchen, Little Faifo Restaurant, and Mai Fish Restaurant.
As I prepare for another day of exploration, I am reminded of a quote by the great Vietnamese poet Nguyễn Du:
Life is but a dream. It captures the essence of travel, where we step into a different reality, a dream filled with new sights, sounds, and experiences. And as I drift off to sleep, I can't help but wonder what wonders tomorrow will bring.
And with that, I bid you goodnight from Hoi An, a city that has already captured my heart and soul. I look forward to sharing more of my adventures with you tomorrow. Until then, *ngủ ngon* (good night)!
