Today was a vibrant immersion into the heart of Iquitos, a city teeming with art, culture, and the irresistible flavors of the Amazon. From exploring colorful murals to planning our next adventure into the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve, every moment was a sensory delight. The day culminated in a culinary journey through the city's diverse restaurants, each offering a unique taste of the region.
Our day began with a leisurely stroll through the Mural Park. I had heard whispers of its vibrant displays, but nothing could have prepared me for the explosion of color and creativity that awaited. Each mural told a story, a vivid tapestry of local life, Amazonian folklore, and the raw, untamed beauty of the rainforest. Lara was particularly captivated, her eyes wide with wonder as she pointed out the intricate details and fantastical creatures that adorned the walls. Hans, ever the pragmatist, was impressed by the scale and ambition of the project, noting how it transformed a once-overlooked space into a thriving hub of community expression.

As we wandered through the park, I couldn't help but reflect on the power of art to transcend cultural boundaries. Here, in the heart of the Amazon, amidst the humidity and the cacophony of city sounds, these murals spoke a universal language of hope, resilience, and the enduring human spirit. It reminded me of the intricate carvings at Angkor Wat, back in my homeland, each telling a story of gods, kings, and the everyday lives of the Khmer people.
The soul of a city is often found not in its grand monuments, but in the colorful expressions of its everyday people.
After our artistic immersion, we sought out the Reserva Nacional Pacaya Samiria - Acatupel Agency, eager to solidify our plans for venturing deeper into the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve. The reserve, I had learned, is the largest national park in Peru, and the second largest ecological reserve in the entire Amazon. This vast expanse of protected land is home to an astounding array of biodiversity, including over 500 species of birds, 100 species of mammals, and countless reptiles, amphibians, and fish. The agency staff were incredibly helpful, patiently answering our questions and offering invaluable insights into the best routes, accommodations, and activities within the reserve. We discussed our interests – wildlife spotting, learning about medicinal plants, and connecting with local communities – and they tailored a bespoke itinerary that perfectly matched our aspirations. Booking the tour felt like taking the first step into another world, a world of untamed beauty and unparalleled natural wonders. I made sure to double check that our itinerary included opportunities to spot the elusive pink river dolphins, a creature I've dreamt of seeing since childhood.

With our jungle adventure secured, it was time to embark on a culinary exploration of Iquitos. For breakfast, we ventured to YAKUMAMA RESTOBAR FLOTANTE, a floating restaurant on the Nanay River. The gentle rocking of the boat, combined with the stunning views of the surrounding rainforest, created a truly unique dining experience. I savored a traditional Peruvian breakfast of *tacu-tacu* (rice and beans) with a fried egg and plantains, while Hans opted for a hearty omelet filled with local vegetables. Lara, predictably, chose pancakes, but even she couldn't resist sampling the exotic fruits that adorned the table. The food was delicious, but it was the ambiance that truly stole the show.

For lunch, we decided on THE YELLOW ROSE OF TEXAS RESTAURANT, a quirky establishment known for its blend of American and jungle cuisine. Founded by Gerald Mayeaux, the restaurant is a multi-level space that combines a bar and restaurant with an American theme. The eclectic decor, featuring everything from taxidermied piranhas to American football memorabilia, was a feast for the eyes. I opted for a *paiche* burger, made with the Amazon's largest fish, while Hans chose a classic Texan BBQ platter. Lara, ever adventurous, surprised us by ordering *suri*, grilled grubs that are a local delicacy. She found them surprisingly palatable, though I must admit I couldn't bring myself to try one. The Yellow Rose is known for offering more than 400 jungle, national, and international dishes. The restaurant's name is influenced by the legend of Emily D. West, a heroine in the Texas Independence, also identified in the song The Yellow Rose of Texas.

As evening approached, we found ourselves at Amazon Bistro for dinner, a charming spot recommended by our guide for its authentic regional dishes. The bistro had a cozy, welcoming atmosphere, with wooden décor that gave it a homey style. I indulged in a *juane*, a traditional dish of rice, chicken, and spices wrapped in *bijao* leaves, while Hans savored a *tacacho con cecina*, grilled plantains with dried, salted beef. Lara, still full from her *suri* adventure, opted for a simple but delicious quinoa salad. The meal was a perfect ending to a day of culinary exploration, a testament to the rich and diverse flavors of the Amazon.

Our final stop of the evening was at Bar Restaurant el Papi, a local haunt known for its lively atmosphere and potent cocktails. While Hans and I enjoyed a couple of *caipirinhas*, Lara entertained herself with a game of *sapito*, a traditional Peruvian game involving tossing metal discs at a brass frog. The bar was filled with locals, their laughter and chatter creating a warm and convivial atmosphere. It was a perfect way to soak in the authentic spirit of Iquitos, a city that pulsates with life and energy.

Tomorrow, we leave Iquitos for Machu Picchu, a destination I am very excited about. I am also very sad to leave the Amazon jungle, as it is such a unique and beautiful place. We have an early start tomorrow, so we will have breakfast at Amazon Bistro before heading out. I am looking forward to seeing Machu Picchu, but I will always remember my time in the Amazon. I am grateful for the opportunity to have experienced this incredible place with my family.
As I lay in bed, listening to the sounds of the jungle, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the experiences of the day. From the vibrant murals to the tantalizing flavors, Iquitos had awakened my senses and ignited my spirit of adventure. I am excited for the next stage of our journey, but I will always carry the memories of this Amazonian city in my heart.
