Day 9: A Day of Amazonian Wonders: Lago Lagunas and the Jungle's Embrace
Explore the Pacaya-Samiria's beauty! Lago Lagunas, Mirador Turístico, and local flavors create an unforgettable family adventure.
Reflections on the Jungle of Mirrors
Today, the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve revealed even more of its enchanting secrets. From serene lakes reflecting the sky to panoramic views that stretched across the endless green canopy, it was a day of immersion in the heart of the Amazon. I felt a profound connection to nature, a sense of peace that only such a place can inspire, and a renewed appreciation for the delicate balance of this ecosystem.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Amazon Bistro. This charming spot offered a delightful array of local fruits and freshly baked bread, setting the perfect tone for our adventures. Fueled and ready, we set off to explore Lago Lagunas. The journey itself was an experience, navigating the waterways that snake through the reserve. I couldn't help but think of my work back in Dresden, surrounded by books about Southeast Asian history, compared to this living, breathing history unfolding before my eyes. The air was thick with humidity, but the excitement kept us cool. I was glad I remembered to pack Lara’s favorite Khmer scarf to protect her from the sun.
Arriving at Lago Lagunas, I was immediately struck by the sheer tranquility of the place. The water was so still, it mirrored the sky above, earning the Pacaya-Samiria its nickname, the Jungle of Mirrors. The reflections were so clear, it was hard to tell where the water ended and the sky began. We spent a good part of the morning simply observing the wildlife. Colorful birds flitted through the trees, their calls echoing across the water. We spotted several species, including macaws and egrets, their vibrant plumage a stark contrast to the deep green of the surrounding forest. Hans, ever the keen observer, was quick to identify each one, while Lara, with her sharp eyes, pointed out a family of monkeys swinging playfully from branch to branch.
As we glided across the lake in our small boat, I felt an overwhelming sense of peace. It was as if time stood still, and all that mattered was the present moment. The sounds of the jungle enveloped us – the gentle lapping of water against the boat, the rustling of leaves, and the distant calls of exotic creatures. It was a symphony of nature that soothed my soul.

The Amazon is not just a place; it is an experience that awakens the senses and nourishes the soul.
Next on our itinerary was the Mirador Turístico, a lookout point offering panoramic views of the reserve. The climb to the top was a bit challenging, especially in the humid climate, but the reward was well worth the effort. From the summit, the vast expanse of the Pacaya-Samiria stretched out before us, an endless sea of green. The sheer scale of the rainforest was breathtaking, and I felt a sense of awe at the power and resilience of nature. Hans took some photos, trying to capture the immensity of the landscape, but no image could truly do it justice. You simply had to be there to experience it.

Lara was particularly fascinated by the view, pointing out the winding rivers and hidden lakes that dotted the landscape. She peppered us with questions about the animals that lived there, eager to learn more about the world around her. It warmed my heart to see her so engaged and curious, and I realized that this trip was not just a vacation, but an invaluable educational experience for her. It's moments like these that reinforce why I wanted to bring my family here in the first place. I want to instill in Lara a deep appreciation for nature, a sense of responsibility towards the environment, and an understanding of different cultures.
After soaking in the views, we descended from the Mirador Turístico and made our way to YAKUMAMA RESTOBAR FLOTANTE for lunch. This floating restaurant offered a unique dining experience, with tables set right on the water. The menu featured a variety of local dishes, and we decided to try the ceviche, a Peruvian specialty. The fish was incredibly fresh, and the flavors were a delightful mix of tangy and spicy. Lara, who is usually a picky eater, surprised us by devouring her portion with gusto. It was wonderful to see her trying new things and embracing the local cuisine. Hans enjoyed a local beer while I opted for a refreshing fruit juice.

Following our satisfying lunch, we took a detour to KAVI STORE, a local shop offering a variety of handicrafts and souvenirs. I was hoping to find a special memento of our trip, something that would remind us of our time in the Amazon. The store was filled with colorful textiles, intricate wood carvings, and unique jewelry. I was particularly drawn to a hand-woven tapestry depicting scenes of the rainforest. After much deliberation, I decided to purchase it, knowing that it would be a beautiful addition to our home in Dresden. Lara picked out a small, wooden carving of a monkey, a reminder of the playful primates we had seen earlier in the day.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Embarcadero Restaurante Al Frío y al Fuego for dinner. This restaurant, perched on the banks of the Amazon River, offered stunning views and a sophisticated atmosphere. The ambiance was perfect for a relaxing evening, and we settled in to enjoy our meal. The menu featured a mix of regional and international cuisine, and we decided to try some of the local specialties. I opted for the grilled paiche, a giant Amazon fish, while Hans chose the tacacho con cecina, a traditional dish of plantains and dried meat. Lara, of course, went for the chicken nuggets, a familiar favorite. The food was delicious, and the service was impeccable. As we savored our meal, we watched the sun set over the river, painting the sky in vibrant hues of orange and pink. It was a magical moment, and I felt grateful for the opportunity to share it with my family.

Reflecting on the day, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the wonders of the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve. It is a place of unparalleled beauty and biodiversity, a true treasure of the natural world. I am grateful for the opportunity to experience it with my family, to share in its magic and create memories that will last a lifetime. As we prepare for tomorrow's adventure to Plaza 28 de Julio and the Área de Conservación Regional Comunal Tamshiyacu Tahuayo, I am filled with anticipation for what new discoveries await. Perhaps we will even see some of the local nightlife at Bar Discoteca Emocion.
Before drifting off to sleep, I thought about the importance of preserving places like this for future generations. It is our responsibility to protect the environment, to ensure that our children and grandchildren have the opportunity to experience the wonders of nature. I hope that our trip to the Pacaya-Samiria will inspire Lara to become a steward of the environment, to advocate for conservation, and to make a positive impact on the world. It is a lesson I hope will resonate throughout her life. We forgot our sun hats and extra memory cards, but the memories we made today are unforgettable. It was a day of Amazonian wonders, a day to cherish forever. I am already looking forward to our next adventure.
