A Day of Discovery in the Amazon

Today was a whirlwind of experiences, a day where the serene beauty of the Amazonian wilderness met the vibrant energy of Iquitos. It’s a journey that reminded me why I cherish these family adventures – the blend of learning, discovery, and shared moments that weave into the tapestry of our lives.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at YAKUMAMA RESTOBAR FLOTANTE. The floating restaurant offered a unique ambiance, and enjoying a traditional Peruvian breakfast while gently bobbing on the water was a delightful way to start the day. The kids were especially thrilled by the novelty of it all.

Journey to Campamento Panteon

After breakfast, we set off to Campamento Panteon, eager to immerse ourselves in the natural wonders of the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve. The journey itself was an experience, navigating the waterways that serve as the lifeblood of this region. As we approached the camp, the air grew thick with humidity, and the sounds of the jungle enveloped us. The symphony of chirps, croaks, and rustling leaves was a constant reminder of the vibrant life teeming all around. While conditions are basic, the experience is unmatched.

Exploring National Reserve Allpahuayo-Mishana

Our next stop was the National Reserve Allpahuayo-Mishana, a place renowned for its exceptional biodiversity. This reserve is a treasure trove of unique flora and fauna, and I was particularly excited about the opportunity to spot some of the rare poison dart frogs that call this place home. Hans, with his keen interest in photography, was in his element, snapping away at every colorful insect and unusual plant we encountered. Lara, ever the curious one, peppered our guide with questions about the medicinal properties of various plants.

The Allpahuayo-Mishana National Reserve is truly a birder's paradise, and although I wouldn't call myself an avid 'twitcher', I was still amazed by the sheer variety of bird species we encountered. It's home to nearly 500 registered bird species. The famous Iquitos Gnatcatcher is a major attraction for wildlife observers.

The Amazon has a way of reminding you that you are but a small part of a much larger, interconnected world.

Lunch at The Yellow Rose of Texas Restaurant

For lunch, we decided to try The Yellow Rose of Texas Restaurant, which offered a Tex-Mex cuisine in a lively atmosphere. The restaurant's decor was casual and rustic, with wooden tables and chairs. We shared a hearty meal of BBQ ribs and other Tex-Mex favorites, reminiscing about our adventures in Battambang, Cambodia, where the fusion of cultures often led to unexpected culinary delights.

Dinner at Amazon Bistro

As evening approached, we returned to Iquitos and had dinner at the Amazon Bistro. Located in front of the Malecon, the restaurant is a mix of cafeteria, bar, and restaurant. The wooden decor gives it a cozy style. I opted for the campesino burger, while Hans enjoyed a traditional Peruvian dish with fresh seafood. Lara, ever adventurous, tried a bit of everything.

Nightlife at Urcututu Disco Bar

With Lara safely tucked in at our accommodation, Hans and I ventured out to experience Iquitos’s nightlife. We found ourselves at Urcututu Disco Bar, a place known for its vibrant atmosphere and lively music. The bar was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all eager to dance and socialize. The colorful lights and energetic music created an infectious vibe, and we found ourselves swept up in the revelry. It was a fun way to unwind after a day of exploring, and it gave us a glimpse into the local culture that we wouldn’t have otherwise experienced.

It's worth noting that Iquitos is known for its vibrant nightlife, offering a mix of small discos with Latin music and larger clubs with international DJs. For those looking to explore the city after dark, the Malecón Tarapacá is a must-visit, offering a promenade along the banks of the Itaya River.

As we sipped on refreshing cocktails and swayed to the rhythm of the music, I couldn’t help but reflect on the incredible day we had. From the serene beauty of the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve to the vibrant energy of Iquitos’s nightlife, it was a day that had something for everyone. And as we prepare for tomorrow's adventure to Lago Lagunas and Mirador Turístico, I am filled with anticipation for the new discoveries that await.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Lago Lagunas and Mirador Turístico. I'm particularly excited about the prospect of seeing more of the Amazonian wildlife and capturing some stunning panoramic views from the Mirador Turístico. We'll also be dining at Amazon Bistro for breakfast, YAKUMAMA RESTOBAR FLOTANTE for lunch, and Embarcadero Restaurante Al Frío y al Fuego for dinner. And perhaps, if time allows, we'll squeeze in a visit to KAVI STORE for some souvenir shopping.

The seismic activity in the region is worth noting, as there was a moderate earthquake on September 12, 2025. However, it was not felt in Iquitos, so it did not affect our plans.

This journey is more than just a vacation; it's an opportunity to connect with nature, learn about different cultures, and create lasting memories with my family. It’s about embracing the unexpected and finding joy in the simple moments. And as I reflect on today’s adventures, I am reminded of the importance of slowing down, appreciating the beauty around us, and cherishing the bonds that tie us together.

As I close this entry, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience the wonders of the Amazon with my loved ones. It’s a journey that has already enriched our lives in countless ways, and I know that the memories we are creating here will be treasured for years to come. The blend of adventure, culture, and family bonding is what makes these trips so special, and I am eager to see what tomorrow brings.

And with that, I bid you goodnight from the heart of the Amazon. May your dreams be filled with the sounds of the jungle and the warmth of human connection.
