A Day of Reflections and Rustic Charm

Today in Shirakawa-go was all about embracing the quiet moments and savoring the local culture. Liam and I ventured off the beaten path to discover hidden gems, indulge in authentic cuisine, and soak in the serene atmosphere of this UNESCO World Heritage site. It’s amazing how a day filled with simple pleasures can be so incredibly fulfilling.

Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at Nomura. The aroma of freshly made soba filled the air as we stepped inside the cozy restaurant. I opted for the classic soba noodle set, while Liam, ever the adventurous one, tried a local specialty. Sitting bar-style, we watched the chefs work their magic, crafting each dish with care and precision. It was a delightful start to the day, setting the perfect tone for exploration.

With our appetites satisfied, we set out to find Midorigaike Pond. The walk there was a journey in itself, with lush greenery surrounding us. The pond, nestled near the peak of Mt. Haku, was a sight to behold. The emerald-green water shimmered under the sunlight, creating a mesmerizing effect. I learned that the pond's unique color comes from the hot-spring minerals seeping from below. It felt like stepping into a scene from a traditional Japanese painting.

Sometimes, the most beautiful discoveries are the ones you stumble upon when you least expect them.

Next on our list was the Water Lily Pond. Located near the Wada House, this pond offered a different kind of beauty. The vibrant blooms floated gracefully on the water's surface, creating a serene and picturesque scene. We took our time, capturing the perfect shot of the boardwalk with the gassho-zukuri houses in the background. The air was still and peaceful, a welcome contrast to the busier spots in the village.

For lunch, we decided on Masuzono Bunsuke, a charming restaurant known for its fresh river fish. Tucked away from the main crowds, it offered a tranquil escape. Liam was particularly excited, as he loves trying new seafood dishes. The chef takes pride in serving fresh fish dishes, as he personally catches the live fish from the pond immediately after receiving orders. We savored the Masuen set menu, which included grilled salted char, rainbow trout sashimi, and fried masu trout. It was an exquisite culinary experience, highlighting the natural flavors of the region.

After lunch, we strolled through the village, eventually finding ourselves at Kobikiya, a souvenir shop next to the Wada House. Inside the traditional thatched-roof building, we found a wide array of local products. I picked up a few small thatched roof home-shaped knickknacks as gifts for friends back home, while Liam chose a bottle of local sake. The shop was filled with unique items, each telling a story of Shirakawa-go’s rich heritage.

As evening approached, we made our way to Hidaji for dinner. This small, rustic restaurant is known for its soba and udon dishes, along with local delicacies. I opted for the Hida beef croquette, while Liam tried the gohei mochi (grilled rice with sweet miso). The food was simple yet delicious, reflecting the warmth and hospitality of the village. It was the perfect way to end our day of exploration.

Reflecting on today's adventures, I feel a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and tranquility of Shirakawa-go. From the serene ponds to the delicious local cuisine, every moment was a reminder of the simple joys in life. As we prepare for tomorrow's itinerary, which includes exploring Ogimachi and visiting the Hatotani Hachiman Shrine, I am filled with anticipation for more discoveries and unforgettable experiences. We might even cap off the day with a visit to Koshiyama bar, a local favorite, to unwind and soak in the village's nightlife. Until then, I’ll cherish the memories of today and look forward to sharing more of our journey with you.

I'm also reminded of something I forgot to pack – a power adapter! It's always something, isn't it? Luckily, Liam had one, but it’s a good reminder to double-check those essentials. And now, as the day winds down, I'm excited for what tomorrow holds, especially the chance to capture the iconic panoramic views of Shirakawa-go from the Ogimachi viewpoint.
