Echoes of Art: A Day of Discovery on Naoshima

Today, Naoshima revealed more of its captivating soul. It wasn't just about seeing art; it was about experiencing it, feeling it resonate within the quiet corners of this island. With Sri and Bagus by my side, I set out to explore deeper into the heart of Naoshima's artistic spirit.

Our day began at Café Ippo for breakfast. It's a charming little spot, perfect for fueling up before a day of exploration. The coffee was robust, and the pastries were delightful—a simple pleasure that set a positive tone for the adventures ahead. It reminded me of the small cafes back in Salatiga, where the sense of community was just as important as the food itself.

First on our itinerary was the Art House Project: Minamidera. This was an experience unlike any other. Designed by Tadao Ando, Minamidera plays with light and darkness in ways that challenge your perception. Stepping inside, I was enveloped in complete darkness. It was disorienting, a sensory deprivation that heightened my awareness. Slowly, very slowly, a faint light emerged, revealing the artwork within. It was an exercise in patience and perception, a reminder that sometimes the most profound experiences require us to slow down and allow ourselves to truly see.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.

After the contemplative experience at Minamidera, we made our way to the Lee Ufan Museum. This museum, a collaboration between architect Tadao Ando and artist Lee Ufan, is a sanctuary of minimalist art. The exhibits encouraged contemplation, inviting us to reflect on the spaces between objects and the connections between ourselves and the world around us. I found myself drawn to the simplicity and the profound sense of peace that permeated the museum. Bagus, with his youthful perspective, was particularly intrigued by the way the art interacted with the natural environment. Sri appreciated the serenity of the space, a welcome contrast to her demanding work as a registered nurse.

Lunch at Ebisukamo was a delightful interlude. We savored local flavors and enjoyed a relaxing meal, sharing our thoughts on the art we'd seen so far. I tried some local seafood, and it was incredibly fresh. Sri enjoyed a vegetarian dish, and Bagus opted for a hearty rice bowl. It was a moment of simple pleasure, a chance to recharge before continuing our exploration.

Our final stop of the day was the iconic Yellow Pumpkin by Yayoi Kusama. Perched on the edge of the pier, it's become a symbol of Naoshima. The vibrant yellow against the backdrop of the sea is striking, and it's impossible not to be captivated by its playful energy. Of course, we took the obligatory photos, capturing the moment and the joy of being there together. I was a little worried about the crowds, but the atmosphere was festive and friendly.

As the sun began to set, we found ourselves at Bar SARU. It was a perfect way to unwind and reflect on the day's experiences. We sipped on local drinks, enjoying the laid-back atmosphere and the company of fellow travelers. It was interesting to hear their perspectives on Naoshima and its art scene. It reinforced my belief that travel is not just about seeing new places, but also about connecting with people and sharing experiences.

Dinner at Yuunagi was a fitting end to a day filled with art and reflection. The restaurant offered a stunning view of the sea, and the food was delicious. We enjoyed a leisurely meal, savoring each bite and sharing stories from our day. I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to share this experience with my family. It's moments like these that make travel so rewarding.

Tomorrow, we prepare to leave Naoshima and head back to the mainland. This island has left an indelible mark on me. It's a place where art and nature come together in a harmonious blend, where simplicity and contemplation are valued, and where the human spirit is celebrated. I am already looking forward to the next leg of our journey, carrying with me the memories and insights gained on this magical island.
