A Day of Discovery in Cusco's Museums

Today was a day dedicated to immersing myself in the rich history and culture of Cusco. I decided to explore some of the city's renowned museums and indulge in its local flavors. It was a day of learning, reflection, and culinary delight.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Mistura Grill Cusco. I opted for a traditional Peruvian breakfast, which included some delicious local bread, fresh fruit, and a strong cup of coffee to kickstart my day. The restaurant had a lovely ambiance, and I enjoyed watching the city come to life as I ate.

My first stop was the Inka Museum. Located just a short walk from the Plaza de Armas, the museum is housed in the Casa del Almirante, a beautiful 17th-century building that was once the home of Spanish Admiral Francisco Alderete Maldonado. Stepping inside felt like traveling back in time. The museum houses an extensive collection of artifacts dating back to Inca and pre-Inca times. As someone who enjoys history, I was captivated by the displays of ceramics, textiles, tools, and ceremonial objects. It was fascinating to see the intricate details of Inca artwork and learn about their advanced engineering and agricultural techniques. The museum also showcased artifacts from other Peruvian cultures, such as the Chavin and Wari, providing a comprehensive overview of the region's rich history. I was particularly impressed by the collection of *queros*, Inca ceremonial vessels, and the life-size recreation of an Inca tomb. It really helped to put the grandeur and cultural significance of the Inca civilization into perspective.

After spending a few hours at the Inka Museum, I made my way to the Regional Historical Museum of Cusco, also known as the Casa Garcilaso. This museum is located in the former home of Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, a chronicler of Inca and Spanish descent. The building itself is a historical monument, and it houses a diverse collection of artifacts and artwork from different periods of Cusco's history. The museum is divided into two parts: the first floor displays archaeological pieces from pre-Inca and Inca cultures, while the second floor focuses on the viceregal, republican, and contemporary periods. I was particularly drawn to the colonial paintings from the Cusco School of Art, which blended indigenous and European artistic styles. The museum also had exhibits on the life and work of Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, providing insights into his role in preserving and interpreting Inca history. It was interesting to see the fusion of cultures and the impact of Spanish colonization on the region.

For lunch, I decided to try Mama Seledonia, a restaurant known for its traditional Cusqueño dishes. The restaurant is run by Seledonia Montalvo, a Cusco native who is passionate about preserving and promoting Andean cuisine. I ordered the Alpaca de los Andes, which was served with a delicious *uchucuta* sauce. The alpaca was tender and flavorful, and the sauce added a spicy kick. I also tried the rocoto relleno, a stuffed pepper dish that is a local specialty. The food was hearty and comforting, and I could taste the love and care that went into preparing it. The atmosphere of the restaurant was warm and inviting, and I enjoyed chatting with the friendly staff about the local ingredients and cooking techniques. It felt like a truly authentic culinary experience. It reminded me a bit of my late grandmother’s cooking, where every dish was made with so much love and care.

In the afternoon, I visited the Coca Museum, a small but fascinating museum dedicated to the history and cultural significance of the coca leaf in Andean society. The museum explored the plant's use in ancient rituals, medicine, and everyday life. I learned that the coca leaf has been cultivated in the Andes for thousands of years and that it was considered a sacred plant by the Incas. They used it for various purposes, including divination, offerings to the gods, and as a remedy for altitude sickness and other ailments. The museum also addressed the controversies surrounding the coca leaf and its association with cocaine production. It emphasized the importance of distinguishing between the traditional, cultural uses of coca and the illicit drug trade. After touring the museum, I stopped by the gift shop and purchased some coca tea and chocolates. I have always been fascinated by the cultural significance of plants, especially in traditional medicine, a field I have explored during my travels in Indonesia.

As the day drew to a close, I decided to unwind at Cholos Craft Beers Cusco. This cozy brewpub offers a wide selection of craft beers from local breweries. I sampled a few different beers, including a quinoa kolsch and an imperial IPA. The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly, and I enjoyed chatting with other travelers and expats. It was a great way to end a day of exploring and learning. The bar had a very relaxing atmosphere, and the music was great – a mix of classic and alternative rock from the early 2000s. Sipping on a cold beer, I reflected on all that I had experienced throughout the day. I felt grateful for the opportunity to immerse myself in Cusco's rich culture and history.

Before heading back to Hotel Polo Corporativo, I had dinner at Fusion Andina. I decided to try a fusion of Andean and international cuisine, and I was not disappointed. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere and attentive service. I ordered a quinoa salad and a trout dish, both of which were delicious. The flavors were well-balanced, and the presentation was beautiful. It was a perfect way to end a day of culinary exploration. Even though my wife Sri wasn’t with me on this trip, I knew she would have loved the food here, given her background as a Registered Nurse and her interest in healthy eating.

Today was also Día de los Compadres, a festive event filled with humor and tradition, celebrated on the Thursday before Carnival Sunday. Across Cusco's neighborhoods, compadres are honored with music, food, and playful jokes, marking the start of Carnival celebrations and emphasizing the importance of friendship and unity. It’s quite a lively and colorful time to be in Cusco, and I could feel the festive spirit in the air.

Tomorrow marks the final day of my solo cultural adventure in Cusco. I plan to visit the San Blas Waterfall and caves, Huaca Sapantiana, and Plazoleta de San Blas. I am also looking forward to trying the local cuisine at Rucula Peruvian Restaurant, Calle del Medio Restaurante Bar, and DEVA - Cocina Andina. Before heading to the airport, I hope to find some time to shop for souvenirs at TEXTILES POMATAYLLA.

“The more that you read, the more things you will know, the more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”

It has been an incredible journey, and I am excited to see what tomorrow brings. I am already looking forward to returning to Cusco with my family in the future.
