Farewell, Cusco! A Day of Hidden Gems

As my Peruvian adventure draws to a close, I wanted to soak up every last bit of Cusco's charm. Today was all about exploring the lesser-known corners of this magical city, venturing off the beaten path to discover its hidden gems. I was determined to make the most of my final day, and Cusco certainly didn't disappoint.

My final day began with a hearty breakfast at Rucula Peruvian Restaurant. I opted for a traditional Peruvian breakfast, which gave me the energy I needed for a day of exploring. Rucula is known for using organic ingredients from their own farm, and I could definitely taste the freshness in every bite. The staff was incredibly friendly, and the atmosphere was cozy and inviting.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set off towards the San Blas neighborhood. My first stop was the San Blas Waterfall and caves. The walk there was an adventure in itself, navigating the narrow, cobblestone streets and steep inclines that characterize this artisan district. The waterfall, though not massive, was a welcome sight, a tranquil oasis amidst the bustling city. The caves nearby added an element of mystery, and I enjoyed scrambling around, imagining the stories they could tell. While not as grand as some of the other sites I’ve visited, it was a refreshing escape and a reminder of the natural beauty that surrounds Cusco.

Next on my list was Huaca Sapantiana, an ancient Inca site that promised panoramic views of Cusco. The walk to the huaca took me through more of San Blas, allowing me to appreciate the unique character of this neighborhood. As I climbed higher, the views became more and more breathtaking. Huaca Sapantiana itself was fascinating, with its impressive stone structures and terraced platforms. I spent some time wandering around, imagining what life must have been like for the Incas who once inhabited this space. The site exuded a sense of peace and tranquility, making it the perfect spot for contemplation. I took some photos, trying to capture the beauty of the landscape, but no picture could truly do it justice. It was a moment I wanted to hold onto.

After soaking in the history and views at Huaca Sapantiana, I made my way to Plazoleta de San Blas, the heart of the artisan district. This charming square was bustling with activity, artists displaying their work, and locals going about their daily lives. I wandered around, admiring the colorful paintings, intricate sculptures, and handcrafted jewelry. I even stopped to chat with a few of the artists, learning about their techniques and inspiration. The Plazoleta de San Blas is a hub of creativity, and I felt inspired just being there. I picked up a small, hand-painted ceramic piece as a souvenir, a reminder of the vibrant art scene in Cusco.

Before lunch, I popped into TEXTILES POMATAYLLA, a local textile shop, to pick up a few last-minute souvenirs for Sri and Bagus. I was immediately drawn to the vibrant colors and intricate designs of the textiles on display. The shop owner was incredibly helpful, explaining the different weaving techniques and the significance of the various patterns. I ended up buying a beautiful alpaca scarf for Sri and a colorful woven wall hanging for Bagus. It felt good to support local artisans and bring home a piece of Peruvian culture for my family.

For lunch, I decided to try Calle del Medio Restaurante Bar. The restaurant had a lively atmosphere, and the menu offered a mix of Peruvian and international dishes. I opted for a classic Lomo Saltado, which was absolutely delicious. The beef was tender and flavorful, and the sauce was perfectly balanced. The service was excellent, and I enjoyed watching the world go by from my table near the window. I could see the Plazoleta de San Blas from my seat and it was great to people watch while I ate.

As the afternoon wore on, I found myself drawn back to Plazoleta de San Blas. I grabbed a coffee from a nearby cafe and sat on a bench, simply soaking in the atmosphere. The square was even more lively than before, with musicians playing traditional Andean music and children chasing pigeons. I watched as a group of dancers performed a traditional Peruvian dance, their colorful costumes swirling in the afternoon sun. It was a perfect ending to my day of exploring.

For my final dinner in Cusco, I chose DEVA - Cocina Andina, a restaurant known for its modern take on traditional Andean cuisine. I started with a quinoa soup, which was hearty and flavorful, followed by a grilled alpaca steak. The alpaca was cooked to perfection, tender and juicy, and the accompanying vegetables were fresh and delicious. The service was attentive and friendly, and the ambiance was warm and inviting. It was a memorable meal, a fitting end to my culinary adventures in Cusco.

Cusco, with its rich history, stunning landscapes, and vibrant culture, has captured my heart. I'll never forget the warmth of the people, the beauty of the Andes, and the magic of Machu Picchu. This trip has been a dream come true, and I can't wait to return someday with Sri and Bagus to share these experiences with them. Maybe we can try a different time of year, perhaps closer to the summer months in Canada, to experience a different side of Peru. I know they'll love it just as much as I do.

As I prepare to leave Cusco tomorrow, I'm filled with a mix of emotions. I'm sad to say goodbye to this incredible city, but I'm also excited to return home to my family. I know that the memories I've made here will stay with me forever, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to have experienced this solo cultural adventure in Peru.

Adiós, Cusco! Until we meet again.
