Exploring the Renaissance Wonders of Florence with Erika
Day 2: A Day of Florentine Grandeur: Exploring Palazzi and Piazza
Immerse yourself in Florence's history with Hiroshi as he explores Palazzo Vecchio, Santa Maria Novella, and the Loggia dei Lanzi.
Echoes of the Renaissance
Today, Erika and I delved deeper into the heart of Florence, a city that continues to whisper tales of its glorious past at every corner. It's remarkable how each day here unveils new layers of history and art, enriching our understanding and appreciation of this magnificent city. From the imposing presence of Palazzo Vecchio to the serene beauty of Basilica di Santa Maria Novella, and the captivating sculptures of Loggia dei Lanzi, Florence has truly captured our hearts.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Le Cappelle Medicee Restorante, a charming spot near the Basilica di San Lorenzo. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the traditional Tuscan fare set the perfect tone for a day of exploration. Erika particularly enjoyed the fresh pastries, while I savored the strong, aromatic coffee, fueling us for the adventures that lay ahead.
First on our itinerary was the Palazzo Vecchio, a building that has stood as a symbol of Florence's political power for centuries. As an antique shop owner, I've always been fascinated by the stories objects and buildings can tell, and Palazzo Vecchio is no exception. Built in the late 13th century, it served as the seat of the Florentine Republic and later became the residence of the Medici family. The sheer scale of the palace is impressive, its imposing structure dominating the Piazza della Signoria. We spent hours wandering through its grand halls, marveling at the intricate frescoes and sculptures that adorn every room. The Salone dei Cinquecento, with its vast size and stunning artwork, was particularly breathtaking. I couldn't help but imagine the historical events that had unfolded within those walls, the decisions that had shaped the destiny of Florence.
History is not the past but a map of the past, drawn from a particular point of view.
Leaving Palazzo Vecchio, we strolled through the Piazza della Signoria, taking in the sights and sounds of this bustling public space. The square is a veritable open-air museum, filled with statues and fountains that showcase the city's artistic heritage. The replica of Michelangelo's David stands proudly near the entrance of Palazzo Vecchio, a testament to the city's enduring love of art and beauty. We paused for a moment to admire the Fountain of Neptune, its intricate design and powerful symbolism capturing the spirit of the Renaissance.
Next, we made our way to the Basilica di Santa Maria Novella, a stunning example of Gothic-Renaissance architecture. The basilica's façade, designed by Leon Battista Alberti, is a masterpiece of harmony and proportion. Inside, the church is filled with priceless works of art, including frescoes by Masaccio, Ghirlandaio, and Filippino Lippi. Erika, with her librarian's eye for detail, was particularly drawn to the intricate details of the frescoes, while I was captivated by the basilica's serene atmosphere, a welcome respite from the bustling city outside. The Basilica has a collection of artworks made by the very finest and great artists of the Renaissance. One of the first works of art to reach the church was Duccio's Maestà (1285), known as the 'Rucellai Madonna', which is now in the Uffizi; the Crucifix documented inside the church in 1312 was painted by the young Giotto. The major 14th-century decorative schemes that have come down to us date from the years after the Plague of 1348.

Our final stop of the day was the Loggia dei Lanzi, an open-air sculpture gallery located next to the Uffizi Gallery. The loggia houses a collection of impressive sculptures, including Cellini's Perseus with the Head of Medusa and Giambologna's Rape of the Sabine Women. The statues had been in the Medici villa at Rome since 1584 and were brought here by Pietro Leopoldo in 1789. As we wandered through the loggia, admiring the skill and artistry of the sculptors, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the artistic achievements of the Renaissance. The Loggia dei Lanzi is almost like an outdoor museum with its collection of impressive Renaissance and Roman sculptures. The tradition of installing statues in the loggia started in 1494 when the Florentines expelled the Medici, who had ruled over the city for more than 150 years.

For lunch, we found ourselves at Il Gatto e la Volpe, a delightful trattoria that Erika had read about. It was tucked away from the main tourist thoroughfare, offering a more authentic Florentine experience. The lobster pasta was a standout, rich and flavorful, and the wild boar pasta was equally impressive. It’s these little culinary discoveries that make traveling so rewarding. The restaurant's location near major attractions makes it convenient yet away from the tourist crowds. The food was simply delicious, interior well designed and the staff very professional.

In the evening, we treated ourselves to a delightful dinner at Osteria dell'Enoteca. The restaurant's ambiance was warm and inviting, and the menu featured a range of traditional Tuscan dishes. I opted for the Bistecca alla Fiorentina, a succulent steak cooked to perfection, while Erika chose the pici pasta with wild boar ragu, a hearty and flavorful dish. We savored every bite, accompanied by a bottle of local Chianti, and toasted to another wonderful day in Florence. There is a reason Osteria dell'Enoteca was featured by Eater as one of the 10 best new restaurants in Florence in 2018. The restaurant is perfect for a romantic dinner, special occasion, or even an important business meal.

To cap off the evening, we ventured to Mad - Souls & Spirits, a unique bar known for its experimental cocktails. Located in the Oltrarno district, the bar had a laid-back atmosphere and a quirky, unpretentious vibe. I decided to try one of their signature concoctions, while Erika opted for a classic Negroni. As we sipped our drinks and soaked in the lively atmosphere, we reflected on the day's adventures, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience the magic of Florence together. The bar serves a tiny platter of raw crudite, olives, chips and finger panini like tramezzini. Mad is the most fun stop on the list, tucked into the row of bars filling Borgo San Frediano.

As I sit here now, penning these thoughts, I can't help but feel a sense of anticipation for what tomorrow holds. Our itinerary includes visits to the Basilica di San Lorenzo, the Museo di San Marco, and the Giardino delle Rose. I am particularly excited about the Museo di San Marco, as I've read about its impressive collection of Fra Angelico frescoes. Erika, on the other hand, is looking forward to strolling through the Giardino delle Rose, hoping to catch a glimpse of the city from its panoramic viewpoint. We also plan to visit Davide Cerasi Leather Boutique, a local shop known for its high-quality leather goods. It will be a wonderful opportunity to find a unique souvenir to remind us of our time in Florence.
Florence continues to enchant us with its beauty, history, and charm. Each day brings new discoveries and unforgettable experiences. I am so grateful to be sharing this journey with Erika, my wife and fellow explorer. Together, we are creating memories that will last a lifetime.
It’s funny, you know, back in Heidelberg, my antique shop feels like a treasure trove of forgotten stories. But here in Florence, I realize that the entire city is an antique shop, each building, each artwork, a testament to human creativity and resilience. It’s a humbling and inspiring thought.
Tomorrow, we delve further into the religious heart of Florence, visiting the Basilica di San Lorenzo and the Museo di San Marco. Erika is particularly excited about the Giardino delle Rose, and I must admit, the prospect of a panoramic view of Florence is quite alluring. Until then, *Arrivederci*!
