A Day of Renaissance Reverie

Today, Erika and I embarked on a journey through time, tracing the footsteps of Renaissance masters and finding solace in the beauty of a Florentine garden. It was a day of contrasts, from the solemn grandeur of ancient basilicas to the vibrant hues of winter roses, a reminder that even in January, Florence holds a unique charm.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Il Santo Bevitore. Fuelled by strong coffee and delicious pastries, we set off to explore the Basilica di San Lorenzo. The crisp morning air nipped at our cheeks, but the anticipation of seeing Brunelleschi's architectural genius kept us warm. San Lorenzo is more than just a church; it's a testament to the Medici family's influence and a cornerstone of Renaissance architecture. It was fascinating to learn that it served as the city's cathedral for three centuries before the title was transferred to Santa Reparata.

The basilica's unadorned facade is quite striking. Inside, the harmonious proportions and the play of light and shadow create a serene atmosphere. Erika, with her keen eye for detail, pointed out the fluted columns and the geometrically precise floor plan, hallmarks of Brunelleschi's style. We spent a good amount of time in the Old Sacristy, admiring Donatello's intricate bronze doors and the astrological depictions in the dome. It’s incredible to think that the cupola's design reflects the sky of Florence in July 1442, a testament to the Renaissance fascination with both science and art. As an antique shop owner, I always appreciate the blend of artistry and functionality, and San Lorenzo is a perfect example of this synthesis.

The true work of art is but a shadow of the divine perfection.

Next on our itinerary was the Museo di San Marco. Housed in a 15th-century Dominican convent, this museum is home to the world's most extensive collection of works by Fra Angelico. As we entered the convent, a sense of tranquility washed over us. The architecture, designed by Michelozzo, is a masterpiece in itself, providing a fitting backdrop for Angelico's ethereal frescoes. We were immediately drawn to the Annunciation, a masterpiece of Renaissance painting that captures the Virgin Mary's grace and humility. The light seemed to emanate from the fresco itself, illuminating the small space and filling it with a sense of divine presence.

Walking through the friar's cells, each adorned with a small, simple fresco, was a deeply moving experience. These frescoes, painted by Fra Angelico between 1439 and 1445, were meant to inspire prayer and meditation. The simplicity of the scenes, depicting moments from the life of Christ, is profoundly affecting. It's remarkable to think that Angelico, a member of the Dominican community, created these works for the exclusive contemplation of his fellow friars. It was a privilege to witness such devotion and artistry firsthand.

The Museo di San Marco also houses a remarkable library, designed by Michelozzo for Cosimo de' Medici. As a lover of history and books, I was in awe of the collection of manuscripts, which includes priceless works that once belonged to the Medici family and other prominent figures of the Renaissance. The library's serene atmosphere and the weight of history within its walls made it a truly special place.

For lunch, we ventured to Coquinarius, a charming restaurant known for its delicious and innovative cuisine. We shared a selection of Tuscan specialties, savoring the flavors of the region. The restaurant's cozy atmosphere and friendly service made it a perfect spot to relax and recharge after our morning of sightseeing.

In the afternoon, we decided to escape the city's hustle and bustle and visit the Giardino delle Rose. Located below Piazzale Michelangelo, this garden offers a panoramic view of Florence that is simply breathtaking. Even in January, the garden held a certain charm. While the roses weren't in full bloom, there were still plenty of other plants and flowers to admire. The winter light cast a soft glow over the landscape, creating a serene and peaceful atmosphere. Erika, with her love for gardening, was particularly delighted by the Japanese Shorai oasis, a tranquil space with small artificial lakes and a variety of Japanese plants.

The Giardino delle Rose also features a collection of bronze sculptures by Belgian artist Jean-Michel Folon. These whimsical and thought-provoking sculptures added a touch of whimsy to the garden, inviting visitors to contemplate the relationship between art and nature. As we strolled through the garden, we paused to admire the sculptures and take in the stunning views of Florence. It was a perfect way to end our day, surrounded by beauty and tranquility.

Before heading back to the hotel, we made a stop at Davide Cerasi Leather Boutique. I have been meaning to get a new leather satchel for some time now, and Erika recommended this shop. I was not disappointed. The quality of the leather was exceptional, and the craftsmanship was superb. I ended up purchasing a beautiful satchel that I know I will treasure for years to come. It’s always a pleasure to find a piece that speaks to both quality and timeless style, something that reminds me of my own passion for enduring craftsmanship in my antique shop.

As we walked back to Hotel Rex, the city was bathed in the warm glow of streetlights. The air was filled with the sounds of laughter and music, a testament to Florence's vibrant spirit. Reflecting on the day, I felt grateful for the opportunity to experience the city's rich history, art, and culture. Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Cappelle Medicee, the Museo Nazionale del Bargello, and Piazza della Signoria. I am particularly excited to see Michelangelo's Bacchus at the Bargello and to explore the political heart of Florence at Piazza della Signoria. And in the evening, we'll be indulging in a special dinner at Gucci Osteria da Massimo Bottura. I am very much looking forward to that.

As I sit here writing this, I am reminded of a quote by Leonardo da Vinci: There are three classes of people: those who see, those who see when they are shown, those who do not see. Today, Erika and I were fortunate enough to be among those who see, who appreciate the beauty and history that surrounds us. And I hope that through my writing, I can share that vision with you, my readers.
