Roaring Adventures and Peaceful Retreats
Today was a delightful mix of prehistoric exploration and serene relaxation, a perfect balance that Erika and Lena particularly enjoyed. It reminded me of the harmony I strive to create in my antique shop, blending the old with the new, the exciting with the calming.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Mos Burger Nagasaki Hamanomachi. I've always been fascinated by how different cultures interpret familiar concepts, and Mos Burger is a prime example. It's a Japanese take on the American burger, and I found it quite intriguing. The teriyaki burger was a pleasant surprise, a fusion of flavors that I, as someone who appreciates both Japanese and European tastes, found quite satisfying. Lena opted for the green burger, a plant-based option, and was thoroughly impressed. Erika enjoyed a classic burger, appreciating the quality of the ingredients. It was a great way to start our day, fueling up for the adventures ahead.

Our first destination was the Nagasaki Nomozaki Dinosaur Park. I must admit, I was initially skeptical. Dinosaurs in Nagasaki? But as we approached, the excitement began to build. The park is located on the Nomozaki Peninsula, offering stunning views of the ocean and Gunkanjima, also known as Battleship Island. The juxtaposition of prehistoric creatures against the backdrop of a modern, historical site was quite striking. The Nagasaki Nomozaki Dinosaur Park opened in October 2021, and I must say, it's a wonderful place to visit and learn about dinosaurs and the world they lived in. It is a two-story complex, and houses history stretching back over 80 million years to the Late Cretaceous Period. The complex is divided into five main sections.

The museum itself was surprisingly engaging. As someone who appreciates history, I found the exhibits well-curated and informative. The highlight was undoubtedly the 13-meter-long Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton replica. It was truly awe-inspiring to stand beneath such a massive creature, imagining what life must have been like millions of years ago. Lena, with her artistic eye, was fascinated by the detailed recreations of the dinosaurs and the landscapes they inhabited. Erika, ever the librarian, devoured the information panels, eager to learn more about the science behind the discoveries. I was particularly intrigued by the Open Lab, where we could observe paleontologists at work, cleaning and studying fossils. It was a fascinating glimpse into the process of uncovering the past.
The past is never dead. It's not even past.
After our prehistoric adventure, we were ready for something a little more tranquil. We headed to Aguri Hill, a beautiful park offering stunning views of the surrounding countryside. It was a welcome change of pace after the excitement of the Dinosaur Park. As we strolled through the park, we were greeted by lush greenery and vibrant flowers. The air was fresh and clean, a welcome contrast to the city. Lena, ever the nature enthusiast, was in her element, snapping photos of the flora and fauna. Erika and I enjoyed a leisurely walk, taking in the scenery and enjoying the peace and quiet. The Agri Hills Resort (Glamping Resort Glanso Nagasaki) is located in Aguri Hill. Glamping Resort Glanso is a glamping resort where you can enjoy nature with all five senses.

For lunch, we visited Veggie Cafe Bar Nobister. As someone who appreciates healthy and delicious food, I was eager to try this vegetarian restaurant. The cafe had a cozy, intimate atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. I opted for the vegan set menu, a delightful assortment of colorful and flavorful dishes. Erika chose a vegetarian curry, while Lena enjoyed a hearty sandwich. We were all impressed by the quality of the ingredients and the care that went into preparing each dish. It was a refreshing and satisfying meal, a perfect complement to our day of exploration. Veggie Cafe Bar Nobister has a separate vegan menu, and cooks with organic or local grown ingredients as much as possible. They also produce their own salt, and uses no refined sugar.

In the evening, we decided to indulge in a traditional Japanese dinner at Kagetsu. This restaurant is steeped in history, dating back to the Edo period. It's known for its shippoku cuisine, a unique blend of Japanese, Chinese, and Western influences. The restaurant itself was a work of art, with beautiful gardens and elegant interiors. The service was impeccable, and the food was exquisite. Each dish was a masterpiece, a testament to the skill and artistry of the chefs. As we savored the flavors and aromas, I couldn't help but reflect on the rich history and culture of Nagasaki. Kagetsu is a historic restaurant in Nagasaki City, and it is said to have been frequented by Sakamoto Ryoma.

After dinner, we decided to unwind with a drink at Lounge Harmony. It was a quiet, intimate space, perfect for a relaxing evening. As I sipped my sake, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experiences we had shared today. From the prehistoric wonders of the Dinosaur Park to the tranquil beauty of Aguri Hill, from the delicious flavors of Mos Burger and Veggie Cafe Bar Nobister to the elegant ambiance of Kagetsu, today had been a feast for the senses. Looking ahead to tomorrow, we're planning to visit the Nagasaki Penguin Aquarium and the Third observation plaza. I'm particularly excited about the aquarium, as I've always been fascinated by penguins. I'm sure Lena will enjoy it as well, as she has a soft spot for animals. Erika is looking forward to the observation plaza, eager to capture the panoramic views of the city. We'll also be trying out Yoshinoya for breakfast, Nagasaki Shippoku Hamakatsu for lunch, and Shikairou Chinese Restaurant for dinner. And, of course, we'll be making a stop at Don Quijote Hamanomachi for some souvenir shopping.
As I reflect on our day, I'm struck by the diversity and richness of Nagasaki. It's a city that seamlessly blends history, culture, and natural beauty. It's a place where you can explore prehistoric wonders, savor traditional cuisine, and find moments of peace and tranquility. It's a city that has captured my heart, and I'm eager to see what tomorrow brings.
I am also mindful that July 16th is the 80th Anniversary of Remembering Trinity, Hiroshima, and Nagasaki. It is important to remember the past.
As we prepare for another day of exploration, I'm reminded of a quote from a wise old friend:
Travel is more than seeing the sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living. And indeed, this trip to Nagasaki is already changing us, opening our eyes to new perspectives and deepening our appreciation for the world around us. I am so happy to be sharing this experience with Erika and Lena.
