A Day of Remembrance and Revelry

Today in Tarragona was a journey through time and tradition, a blend of somber reflection and joyful celebration. It’s remarkable how a single day can hold so much history and culture, each experience leaving its own unique imprint. Erika and I embraced every moment, from the quiet reverence of ancient burial grounds to the vibrant energy of a monument dedicated to human achievement. These are the days that truly enrich a travel experience, offering glimpses into the soul of a place.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at De Vins. I always appreciate a good strong coffee to start the day, and Erika enjoys a lighter fare with some fresh fruit. Fuelled and ready, we set out to explore the Early Christian Cemetery of Tàrraco. This site, a sprawling necropolis dating back to the 3rd to 5th centuries AD, offered a fascinating glimpse into the funerary practices of early Christians and Romans. As we wandered through the remains of over 2,000 tombs, I couldn't help but reflect on the lives of those buried here. The sheer scale of the cemetery was impressive, a testament to the vibrant community that once thrived in this area.
It was fascinating to learn that the cemetery's discovery was quite accidental, unearthed during construction work in the early 20th century. The artifacts and remains found here have provided invaluable insights into the beliefs and customs of the people who lived in Tarraco so long ago. Walking among the ancient stones, I felt a profound connection to the past, a sense of shared humanity across the centuries. Erika was particularly moved by the stories of the individuals whose lives were commemorated here, their names and professions etched into the stone.

Leaving the quietude of the cemetery, we made our way to the Monument to the Castellers. This sculpture, located on the Rambla Nova, is a tribute to the Catalan tradition of building human towers, a practice that requires immense strength, balance, and teamwork. The monument itself is a stunning work of art, depicting a '4 de 8' castell at its peak, with the *enxaneta* (the child at the top) making their final move.
As someone who appreciates craftsmanship and dedication, I was deeply impressed by the detail and realism of the sculpture. Each of the 222 figures is rendered with remarkable accuracy, capturing the strain and determination on their faces. It’s a powerful representation of the values that underpin this unique cultural tradition: unity, strength, and courage.
Tradition is not the worship of ashes, but the preservation of fire.

Erika, always keen to learn more about local customs, was fascinated by the history and significance of the *castellers*. She learned that the tradition dates back centuries and is an integral part of Catalan identity. The monument serves as a focal point for both locals and tourists, a reminder of the importance of community and shared heritage. We spent some time admiring the monument from different angles, taking in the sheer scale and complexity of the sculpture. It’s a truly awe-inspiring sight, a testament to human potential and collaboration.

For lunch, we chose Arcs Restaurant, drawn in by its inviting atmosphere and promise of traditional Catalan cuisine. The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike, a lively mix of conversation and laughter. We ordered a selection of tapas to share, including *patatas bravas*, *calamares*, and *pan con tomate*. Each dish was bursting with flavour, a testament to the quality of the ingredients and the skill of the chef. I particularly enjoyed the *patatas bravas*, the spicy sauce adding a welcome kick to the crispy potatoes. Erika was delighted with the fresh seafood, a reminder of Tarragona's coastal location. The meal was a perfect representation of Catalan gastronomy: simple, honest, and delicious.
After lunch, we strolled through the Plaça del Pallol, a historic square in the heart of Tarragona's old town. This charming square is believed to have been part of the ancient Roman forum, serving as a social and economic hub. Today, it’s a peaceful spot, a place to relax and soak in the atmosphere of the city.

The square is surrounded by historic buildings, their facades adorned with intricate details and colourful balconies. We sat for a while on a bench, watching the world go by. Children played, couples strolled hand-in-hand, and locals chatted animatedly. It was a scene of everyday life, a reminder that even in a city steeped in history, life goes on. The Plaça del Pallol is more than just a square; it's a living, breathing part of Tarragona's identity.
As the afternoon drew to a close, we sought refuge from the heat in Bar Dorado. This local establishment offered a welcome respite, a cool and shady spot to enjoy a refreshing drink. I opted for a cold beer, while Erika chose a glass of *tinto de verano*, a light and fruity wine spritzer. The bar was filled with locals, their voices creating a warm and convivial atmosphere. We chatted with the bartender, a friendly and knowledgeable man who shared some insights into the city's history and culture. It was a pleasant way to unwind after a day of exploring, a chance to connect with the local community and learn more about their way of life.

For dinner, we had reservations at Les Coques, a restaurant known for its innovative take on traditional Catalan cuisine. The restaurant was located in a quiet side street, its entrance marked by a discreet sign. Inside, the atmosphere was elegant and refined, with soft lighting and minimalist decor. We were greeted warmly by the staff and shown to our table, a cosy spot in the corner of the room. The menu was a tempting array of modern dishes, each one showcasing the chef's creativity and skill.
We started with a selection of appetizers, including *croquetas de jamón*, *pulpo a la gallega*, and *escalivada*. Each dish was beautifully presented and bursting with flavour, a testament to the chef's attention to detail. For our main courses, I chose the *arroz negro*, a black rice dish with seafood, while Erika opted for the *bacalao*, a salt cod dish with vegetables. Both dishes were cooked to perfection, the ingredients complementing each other beautifully. The meal was a culinary journey, a celebration of Catalan gastronomy at its finest.

As we walked back to our hotel, the Hotel SB Ciutat Tarragona, the city was quiet and still. The streets were deserted, the only sound the gentle breeze rustling through the trees. We reflected on the day's experiences, the memories we had made, and the lessons we had learned. Tarragona had revealed itself to us, a city of contrasts and surprises, a place where history and modernity intertwine.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Museu Bíblic Tarraconense, Passeig Sant Antoni, and Portal del Roser. I am particularly interested in seeing the biblical museum, as I have always been fascinated by religious history and artifacts. Erika is looking forward to the Passeig Sant Antoni, as she enjoys a good stroll and taking in the scenery. We will also be stopping by El Corte Inglés, as Erika needs to pick up a few things. It promises to be another day of discovery and adventure, a chance to delve deeper into the heart of Tarragona.
It's been a wonderful journey so far, and I am eager to see what tomorrow brings. Tarragona has captured my heart, and I know that I will carry these memories with me long after I leave. I am so grateful for the opportunity to explore this beautiful city with my wife, Erika, and to share my experiences with you, my readers.
