Explore Tarragona's port history, artistic landmarks, and local flavors with Tanaka Hiroshi and Erika on their cultural journey.
A Day of Tarragona's Treasures
Today was a day of delving into Tarragona's rich tapestry, a blend of maritime history, artistic expression, and the simple pleasures of local life. Erika and I set out with open minds and comfortable shoes, ready to embrace whatever discoveries awaited us.
Our first destination was the Museu del Port de Tarragona. As the owner of an antique shop, I'm always drawn to places that preserve and showcase history, and this museum did not disappoint. The museum is housed in a converted warehouse dating back to the early 20th century. It was fascinating to see how the port has evolved from Roman times to the present day. The exhibits detailed the lives of the dockworkers, the various fishing techniques, and the types of vessels that have sailed these waters. It was particularly interesting to learn about the goods that passed through the port, connecting Tarragona to the wider world. Erika, with her librarian's love for organization, was impressed by the museum's comprehensive collection of artifacts and documents. The advanced audiovisual and interactive resources really brought the history to life.

Leaving the museum, we strolled towards the Torre dels Vents, a modern sculpture that stands as a testament to Tarragona's contemporary artistic spirit. The 'Tower of Winds,' as it translates, is a striking metal structure designed by Antoni Mas Castelltort, inaugurated in 2006. According to its creator, the sculpture is inspired by the industries around Tarragona and symbolizes the movement and work of its inhabitants. As we approached, the tower's elegant design captivated us, set against the backdrop of the urban landscape. I found it a compelling contrast to the ancient Roman ruins we had seen earlier in our trip. The tower is located at the end of the main promenade in Tarragona. Erika appreciated the artistic flair, commenting on how the tower seemed to capture the essence of the city's vibrant energy.

Every corner of Tarragona tells a story, a blend of ancient echoes and modern whispers.
Next on our list was the Plaça de les Cols, a charming square nestled in the heart of the Part Alta, Tarragona's historic center. As we walked through the narrow, winding streets, we could feel the weight of history all around us. The square itself was bustling with activity, locals and tourists alike enjoying the pleasant atmosphere. I was particularly interested to learn that the square is a traditional spot to enjoy the processions. Erika, ever the observer, noted the architectural details of the buildings surrounding the square, each one a testament to a different era in Tarragona's past. We found a small café and sat outside, sipping on refreshing glasses of *horchata* and soaking in the ambiance.

For breakfast, we visited Osteria del Lab, a delightful Italian restaurant that had been highly recommended. The restaurant's cozy and intimate ambiance, with its exposed Roman walls and arches, immediately charmed us. We opted for the five-course tasting menu, which, at just €15, was an absolute steal. Each dish was beautifully presented and bursting with flavor, a testament to the chef's culinary skills. Erika particularly enjoyed the potato croquette with spicy sauce, while I was partial to the veal with tuna sauce. The wine list was impressive, with a great selection of Spanish and Italian wines at affordable prices. It was the perfect start to our day of exploration. The service was also very friendly and helpful.

Lunch took us to Restaurant Casa Balcells, known for its Mediterranean and Spanish cuisines. The restaurant had a pleasant ambiance and a nice decor, making it a comfortable place to relax and enjoy a meal. We decided to try the seafood paella, a classic Spanish dish, and it was absolutely delicious. The paella was filled with fresh seafood and the rice was perfectly cooked. Erika also ordered a roasted pepper salad, which she thoroughly enjoyed. The staff was friendly and attentive, making our dining experience even more enjoyable.

In the late afternoon, we indulged in some retail therapy at BOULEVARD SHOPPING OLD TOWN TARRAGONA. The area offered a mix of shops, from fashion boutiques to antique dealers, souvenir stores, and artisanal goods. As an antique shop owner myself, I was particularly drawn to the antique shops, browsing through old maps and historical artifacts. Erika, on the other hand, enjoyed the fashion boutiques, admiring the local designs and styles. We picked up a few souvenirs for our daughter, Lena, and a small antique map for my collection. The buildings and scenery are also very beautiful.

For dinner, we chose Restaurant Taranta, a spot known for its Mediterranean cuisine and welcoming atmosphere. We started with the tuna tataki, which was perfectly seared and flavorful. For our main courses, Erika ordered the sirloin steak, while I opted for the grilled vegetables. Both dishes were cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor. The service was attentive and friendly, and the prices were reasonable. It was the perfect way to end our day of exploration. The restaurant is located near the Tarraco Arena Plaza.

As the sun began to set, we took a leisurely stroll along the Rambla Nova, Tarragona's main thoroughfare. The wide avenue was bustling with activity, locals and tourists alike enjoying the cool evening air. We paused to admire the various sculptures that lined the avenue, including the monument to the human towers and the statue of Roger de Llúria. We ended our walk at the Balcony of the Mediterranean, gazing out at the shimmering sea and reflecting on the day's adventures.
Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Early Christian Cemetery of Tàrraco, the Monument to the Castellers, and the Plaça del Pallol. I am looking forward to discovering more about Tarragona's rich history and culture, and sharing our experiences with you all. We might even stop by Bar Dorado for a drink in the evening.
It's been a fulfilling day, immersing ourselves in the historical and cultural offerings of Tarragona. Each site, each meal, each interaction has added another layer to our understanding and appreciation of this vibrant city. As we head back to our hotel, I feel a sense of contentment, knowing that we've made the most of our time here, embracing the spirit of adventure and discovery that lies at the heart of travel.
