Santorini's Liquid Gold

Today was a day dedicated to the fruits of the vine, and let me tell you, Santorini did not disappoint! I've always appreciated a good glass of wine, but today was about so much more than just tasting; it was about understanding the land, the history, and the passion that goes into every bottle.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Avra Santorini Restaurant. The restaurant is nestled within the Myst Boutique Hotel, and its intimate terrace offered stunning views of lush gardens and the shimmering infinity pool, with the Aegean Sea stretching into the horizon. I opted for a classic Greek yogurt with honey and fresh fruit. It was the perfect way to start a day of wine tasting – light, refreshing, and full of energy.

Fueled and ready, Hans and I set off for our Santorini Wine Adventure Tour. I was particularly excited about this, having read so much about the unique volcanic soil and how it impacts the taste of the wines here. The Santorini Wine Adventure Tours promised a deep dive into the island's viticulture, and I was eager to experience it firsthand. I was looking forward to understanding the local winemaking traditions.

Our first stop was the renowned Venetsanos Winery. Perched dramatically on the edge of the caldera, the views alone were worth the visit. The winery itself is steeped in history, being the island's first industrial winery, established in 1947. Our tour guide was incredibly knowledgeable, walking us through the vineyards and explaining how the vines are cultivated in circular patterns close to the ground to protect them from the strong winds and harsh sun. This unique method, called 'kouloura,' is a testament to the ingenuity of the Santorinian winemakers.

We then moved into the tasting room, where we sampled five exquisite wines. I was particularly taken with the Assyrtiko, a dry white wine with citrus aromas, minerality, and a distinct salty edge – a true reflection of the island's volcanic terroir. We also tried the Nykteri, Anagallis, Mandilaria, and the Vinsanto, a naturally sweet dessert wine from sundried grapes. Each wine was thoughtfully paired with local delicacies such as fava beans and tomatokeftedes (tomato fritters), enhancing the tasting experience. Hans, who usually sticks to beer, was surprisingly captivated by the Vinsanto, declaring it a perfect dessert wine. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable.

Wine is bottled poetry.

After the wine tour, we had lunch at Throubi Restaurant at Andronis Concept. The restaurant is nestled in Imerovigli village inside the Andronis Concept Wellness Resort, with a captivating view of the mesmerizing caldera. The restaurant's name, inspired by the Greek word for basil, reflects a commitment to blending traditional and innovative elements. I wanted to try something authentically Santorinian, so I ordered the fava me koukia (fava bean purée) and the grilled octopus. The fava was creamy and delicious, while the octopus was perfectly tender and seasoned. Hans opted for the lamb chops, which he declared were cooked to perfection. The ambiance was elegant and welcoming, with attentive staff providing excellent service.

With our bellies full and our spirits high, we decided to indulge in a little retail therapy at The Silk Shop in Oia. I have always appreciated fine fabrics, and Ukrainian embroidery, and the shop promised a collection of elegant silk garments and accessories. True to its word, the shop was a treasure trove of beautifully crafted scarves, bags, and clothing, all made from the finest silk, cashmere, and wool. I ended up buying a beautiful blue and white silk scarf with a Santorini print – a perfect memento of our trip. The shop itself was charming, housed in an old bakery and decorated with bright colors and ethnic touches. It was a delightful sensory experience.

As evening approached, we made our way to Kopsidi Santorini for dinner. Located in Karterados, this restaurant is known for its traditional Greek cuisine and warm, inviting atmosphere. We started with a selection of classic starters, including tzatziki, fried zucchini, and roasted peppers. For the main course, I decided to try the lamb chops, while Hans went for the pork kontosouvli (spit-roasted pork). Both dishes were cooked to perfection, and the portions were generous. The outdoor seating area was bustling with locals and tourists alike, creating a lively and convivial atmosphere. I savored every bite of the lamb chops, reminiscing about my childhood in Ukraine, where lamb dishes were a staple at family gatherings. The flavors transported me back to those cherished moments, filling me with a sense of nostalgia and warmth.

As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the island, we raised our glasses in a toast to Santorini – a land of breathtaking beauty, rich history, and, of course, exceptional wine. It was a day filled with sensory delights, cultural immersion, and culinary adventures – a day I will cherish for a long time to come.

Tomorrow marks the last day of our Santorini adventure, and I'm already feeling a pang of sadness. But we have a full day planned, starting with a visit to Santo Wines for one last taste of Santorinian viticulture. Then, we're off to the Lost Atlantis Experience - Interactive Museum, which promises to be an engaging and educational journey into the mythical world of Atlantis. For our final dinner, we've booked a table at Theoni’s Restaurant, hoping to savor one last delicious meal before we bid farewell to this magical island. We might even stop by Sun Spirit for a final drink. I want to make the most of our last day, soaking in every moment and creating memories that will last a lifetime. I'll be sure to share all the details with you tomorrow!

As I reflect on our time in Santorini, I'm reminded of a quote by the Greek poet George Seferis:

Wherever I travel, Greece wounds me.

It's a sentiment I understand deeply. Greece, with its ancient history, stunning landscapes, and warm hospitality, has a way of capturing your heart and leaving an indelible mark on your soul. Santorini, in particular, has woven its magic around me, and I know I will carry a piece of this island with me wherever I go.
