Discover Santorini's ancient history at the Museum of Prehistoric Thera and indulge in the island's culinary delights. A day of culture and taste.
A Day of Discovery and Delight
Today was a beautiful blend of history, culture, and, of course, the exquisite flavors of Santorini. Hans and I set out to explore more of what this island has to offer beyond its stunning vistas, and it turned out to be a day filled with unexpected treasures. It’s days like these that remind me why I love to travel – the joy of learning and experiencing new things is simply unmatched.
Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at Triana Tavern in Fira. The weather was lovely, with a gentle breeze, perfect for enjoying a meal on their balcony. I savored some local yogurt with honey and fresh fruit, while Hans opted for a traditional Greek omelet. The atmosphere was cozy, and the views overlooking the eastern side of the island were simply breathtaking. It's always a delight to start the day with such a pleasant experience; the friendly staff made us feel right at home, embodying the warmth of Greek hospitality.

After breakfast, we headed to the Museum of Prehistoric Thera. As someone fascinated by history, I was eager to delve into Santorini's ancient past. The museum is located in Fira, making it easily accessible. Inside, we were transported back in time, exploring the artifacts and remnants of the Minoan civilization that once thrived here. It was truly amazing to see the well-preserved frescoes, pottery, and tools that offered a glimpse into the daily lives of the people who lived on this island thousands of years ago. The Spring Fresco, with its vibrant depiction of nature, was particularly captivating.

History is not a burden on the memory but an illumination of the soul.
One of the highlights was learning about the ancient city of Akrotiri, a Minoan settlement that was buried by a volcanic eruption in the 17th century BC, much like Pompeii. The museum did an excellent job of showcasing the sophisticated urban planning and artistic achievements of this civilization. I was particularly impressed by the intricate pottery and the detailed frescoes that adorned the walls of the ancient houses. It's incredible how much these artifacts can tell us about the people who created them.
After immersing ourselves in history, it was time to indulge in another of Santorini's great attractions: its wine. We drove to the Santorini Wine Museum, located in Vothonas. This unique museum is housed in a natural cave and offers a fascinating journey through the history of winemaking on the island. The museum showcases the traditional methods of wine production, with displays of old equipment, tools, and photographs. It's amazing to think about how the island's volcanic soil contributes to the unique flavor of Santorini wines.

Of course, the highlight of our visit was the wine tasting. We sampled several of the local varieties, including the famous Assyrtiko, a crisp white wine with a distinctive mineral taste. The sommelier explained the characteristics of each wine, and we learned about the unique terroir of Santorini. It was a delightful experience, and I even purchased a few bottles to take back home to Leipzig.
For lunch, we decided to try Santorini Mou, a charming tavern known for its authentic Greek cuisine. The restaurant is family-run and has a rustic, welcoming atmosphere. We sat on the terrace, surrounded by fragrant blossoms and vines, and enjoyed a delicious meal of grilled meats, fresh salads, and local cheeses. The portions were generous, and the prices were very reasonable.

In the evening, we ventured to Armeni Restaurant for dinner. Getting there was an adventure in itself – we took a boat from Ammoudi Bay, which offered stunning views of the coastline and the village of Oia perched on the cliffs above. The restaurant is located right on the beach in Armeni Bay, a secluded and picturesque spot. We savored fresh seafood dishes while watching the sunset over the Aegean Sea. The atmosphere was magical, and the food was simply divine. Hans and I both agreed that it was one of the most memorable dining experiences of our trip.

To cap off the evening, we decided to visit Tango Champagne & Cocktail Bar in Fira. The bar is known for its stylish ambiance, creative cocktails, and panoramic views of the caldera. We sipped on expertly crafted drinks while enjoying the vibrant atmosphere and the stunning scenery. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and culture of Santorini. From exploring ancient ruins to savoring local wines and cuisine, every moment has been a delight. I am also grateful for Hans, who is always by my side, sharing in these wonderful experiences. It's these shared moments that make our travels so special.
Tomorrow, we plan to visit Nea Kameni, the volcanic island in the center of the caldera, and Ancient Thera, an ancient city located on Mesa Vouno mountain. I'm excited to continue our exploration of Santorini's rich history and natural wonders. We'll start with breakfast at Ouzeri, followed by lunch at Aktaion Restaurant after our explorations. Dinner will be at Cava Alta, and perhaps we'll find time to visit the Santorini Folk Art Traditional Shop for a unique souvenir.
Until then, kalinihta from Santorini!
