A Romantic Escape to Santorini
Day 6: Volcanic Shores and Ancient Echoes: Discovering Santorini's Soul
Explore Santorini's volcanic landscapes and ancient history. Uncover hidden gems and savor local flavors in this Greek paradise.
A Day of Fire and History
Today was a day of contrasts, a blend of raw, untamed nature and the echoes of civilizations long past. Santorini continues to surprise me with its ability to hold so much history and beauty in one small island. The air is warm, the sun is bright, and the spirit of adventure is definitely alive.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Ouzeri in Fira. Hans and I shared a table laden with local delicacies. I couldn't resist the temptation of the Dakos salad, with its generous helping of feta, juicy tomatoes, and salty capers atop a barley rusk. Hans, ever the adventurous one, opted for the meatballs in ouzo sauce, a dish that filled the air with the distinct aroma of anise. It was a perfect start to a day promising exploration and discovery. The Ouzeri is a popular spot, and I could see why. The food is delicious, the atmosphere is relaxed, and it’s a wonderful place to soak in the local culture.

After breakfast, we set off for Nea Kameni, the volcanic island in the heart of the caldera. The boat ride itself was an experience, with the deep blue waters of the Aegean stretching out before us, the imposing cliffs of Santorini receding into the distance. As we approached Nea Kameni, the landscape transformed into a stark, almost lunar scene. The island is a testament to the power of nature, a place where the earth still breathes.

The hike to the top of the volcanic crater was challenging but rewarding. The sun beat down on the black volcanic rock, and the air was thick with the smell of sulfur. It reminded me a little of some of the industrial areas back in Khmelnytskyi, but with a strangely beautiful twist. Reaching the summit, we were rewarded with panoramic views of the caldera, a breathtaking vista of the surrounding islands and the endless expanse of the sea. It's hard to believe that this serene landscape was once the site of one of the largest volcanic eruptions in recorded history.
The island of Nea Kameni is a geological wonderland, with unique features that are not found on other Greek islands.
Nea Kameni is more than just a geological wonder; it’s a living laboratory. Scientists constantly monitor the island's active fumaroles, tracking the volcano's activity and studying the unique ecosystem that has taken root in this harsh environment. It’s fascinating to see how life adapts and thrives even in the most extreme conditions.
After descending from the volcano, we took a short boat ride to Palea Kameni, the older of the two volcanic islands. Here, we indulged in a therapeutic mud bath in the island's hot springs. The mineral-rich mud is said to have healing properties, and it was certainly a unique and invigorating experience. We slathered ourselves in the warm, gray mud, feeling the sun on our faces and the gentle lapping of the waves against the shore. It was a moment of pure relaxation, a chance to connect with nature and feel the earth beneath our feet.
Leaving the volcanic islands behind, we made our way to Ancient Thera, perched high on Mesa Vouno Mountain. The drive up the winding road was an adventure in itself, with hairpin turns and stunning views at every corner. Arriving at the site, we stepped back in time, wandering through the ruins of this ancient city that dates back to the 9th century BC.
Explore the ancient ruins of Thera in Santorini, where history and breathtaking views intertwine to create an unforgettable experience.
Ancient Thera offers a glimpse into the lives of the Dorian Greeks, the Romans, and the Byzantines who once called this place home. We explored the remains of temples, houses, and public buildings, imagining what life must have been like in this bustling ancient metropolis. The Agora, the heart of ancient public life, was particularly impressive, with its remnants of shops, monuments, and public buildings. It was easy to envision the vibrant marketplace, the center of commerce and social interaction.
The views from Ancient Thera were simply spectacular. From our vantage point high on the mountain, we could see the beaches of Perissa and Kamari stretching out below us, the sparkling Aegean Sea beyond. It was a strategic location for an ancient city, offering both protection and easy access to the sea. As I stood there, gazing out at the breathtaking panorama, I felt a deep connection to the past, a sense of awe and wonder at the resilience of human civilization.
Before heading back, we stopped by the Santorini Folk Art Traditional Shop. I was hoping to find a small, unique piece to remind me of our travels. The shop was a treasure trove of local crafts, from hand-painted ceramics to intricate embroideries. I ended up buying a small, hand-painted plate depicting a traditional Santorini scene. It will be a lovely addition to our collection back home in Leipzig, a reminder of this beautiful island and its rich cultural heritage.

For lunch, we found ourselves at Aktaion Restaurant in Firostefani, a place that has been serving traditional Greek food for almost a century. I decided to try the Santorini fava puree, a local specialty made from yellow split peas. It was creamy, flavorful, and utterly delicious. Hans opted for the veal braised in tomato sauce with smoked white eggplant puree, another Santorinian specialty. We sat on the patio, enjoying the stunning caldera views and soaking in the lively atmosphere. It was the perfect spot for people-watching, as pedestrians strolled along the Fira-Oia walking path.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Cava Alta in Pyrgos for dinner. This restaurant is nestled in a traditional 100-year-old winery, and the setting is simply magical. We dined on the rooftop terrace, enjoying panoramic views of the island as the sun began to set. The colors of the sky were breathtaking, a fiery palette of orange, pink, and purple. The food was exquisite, a creative take on Mediterranean cuisine. I savored every bite of the pancetta simmered for eight hours with sweet potato puree and peanut butter, while Hans raved about his fresh pasta with ricotta parmesan and black truffle. The service was impeccable, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Pyrgos Kallistis Castle and the Megalochori Churches Viewpoint. We might even stop by the Aion Cocktail Bar & Bistro for an evening drink. But for now, I am content to reflect on the day's adventures, grateful for the opportunity to experience the beauty and history of Santorini.
As I sit here, writing in my travel journal, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the experiences of today. From the volcanic shores of Nea Kameni to the ancient ruins of Thera, Santorini has revealed its soul to me, a soul that is both ancient and vibrant, shaped by the forces of nature and the enduring spirit of human civilization. It is a place that will stay with me long after we have left its shores. The beauty of Santorini lies not just in its stunning landscapes but in the warmth and hospitality of its people.
I am reminded of a Ukrainian proverb my grandmother used to say: Wherever you go, become a part of the landscape, and let the landscape become a part of you. Today, Santorini has become a part of me, and I hope that I, in turn, have left a small piece of myself on this magical island.
