After a smooth flight from Leipzig to Lisbon and a scenic train ride, I've finally arrived in Évora, ready to explore this UNESCO World Heritage city with my friends. The excitement is palpable as we check into our hotel, M'AR De AR Aqueduto, a beautiful blend of modern luxury and historical charm. This trip is more than just a vacation; it's an immersion into centuries of history and culture, a chance to connect with the past and create lasting memories with dear friends.

The weather in Évora in October is simply delightful. The temperature is mild, with the sun shining just enough to make exploring comfortable. It's a welcome change from the cooler weather in Leipzig, and I’m glad I packed layers, just in case the evenings get a bit chilly. I did forget my sunglasses and umbrella, but I'll pick those up tomorrow. For now, it's time to dive into the heart of Évora.

Our first stop was the Centro Histórico de Évora, the historical city center. Winding through the narrow cobblestone streets, I felt as though I had stepped back in time. The architecture is a stunning mix of Roman, Moorish, and medieval influences. Every corner tells a story, and I found myself captivated by the intricate details of the buildings and the vibrant atmosphere of the squares. The air is filled with the scent of local cuisine, and the sounds of Portuguese chatter create a lively backdrop to our exploration.

I couldn't help but think back to my childhood in Khmelnytskyi, Ukraine, where history was always a tangible presence. Here in Évora, that feeling is amplified tenfold. The sense of continuity, of layers upon layers of civilization, is truly awe-inspiring.

Next, we visited the Roman Temple of Évora, also known as the Temple of Diana. This remarkably well-preserved structure dates back to the 1st century AD and stands as a testament to the Roman Empire's lasting influence. The temple, with its Corinthian-style columns, is an impressive sight, especially against the backdrop of the Alentejo sky. It's hard to believe that this temple has survived through so many centuries, witnessing countless historical events.

Walking around the temple, I imagined what life must have been like in Roman Évora, or Liberalitas Julia as it was then known. It has been repurposed over the centuries, even serving as a butcher shop at one point, which ironically helped preserve its structure.

After soaking in the Roman grandeur, we made our way to the Cathedral of Évora, a magnificent example of Gothic architecture. For breakfast, we enjoyed a delightful meal at Café Alentejo. This cozy cafe serves traditional Alentejo dishes in a warm and inviting setting. I savored the local pastries and strong coffee, a perfect start to our day. The staff was friendly and welcoming, making us feel right at home.

My friends enjoyed the Bacalhau and the Brás à Farinheira. The presentation of each dish was a work of art, and the service was impeccable.

For dinner, we chose Taberna Típica Quarta-feira, a small, family-owned restaurant known for its traditional Portuguese cuisine. This place is a true gem, offering a set menu of Alentejo specialties. The atmosphere is cozy and intimate, with only a few tables. We were treated to a variety of dishes, including braised beef cheek, slow-cooked pork neck, and roasted sweet potatoes. Each dish was bursting with flavor, and the experience was truly authentic.

Before dinner, we stopped by a Traditional Portuguese Craft Store. I was looking for a special memento of our trip. The store was filled with beautiful handmade ceramics, cork products, and textiles. I purchased a hand-painted tile with a traditional Alentejo design, which will serve as a reminder of our time here. I also found a small, embroidered pouch, reminiscent of the traditional Ukrainian embroidery I enjoy back in Leipzig. It felt like a little piece of home, connecting my past with my present adventure.

Évora is also known for local events. While we didn't attend any specific events today, I did see posters for upcoming concerts and festivals. It seems there's always something happening in this vibrant city.

I'm looking forward to tomorrow's adventures, which include a visit to the Chapel of Bones, Praça do Giraldo, and the Museu de Évora.
