Exploring the Enchanting Lofoten Islands
Day 9: Chasing Waterfalls and Local Flavors in Lofoten
Exploring Lofoten's hidden gems: Sørvågen Waterfall, serene Selfjorden, and delightful local cuisine. A day of natural beauty and culinary bliss.
A Day of Serenity and Culinary Delights
Today was a day of embracing Lofoten's quieter side, a blend of serene landscapes and delightful culinary experiences. It's funny, isn't it? How sometimes the most profound travel memories aren't the grand, sweeping vistas, but the gentle moments tucked away in the nooks and crannies of a place. Today was one of those days, filled with the soothing sounds of waterfalls, the tranquil beauty of fjords, and the comforting flavors of local cuisine.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant Nihao Lofoten. It felt a bit strange to start the day with Chinese food in Norway, but Élodie was really excited, and I have to admit, the food was delicious. I opted for the Har Gow and Siu Mai dumplings, while Élodie went for the spring rolls. We enjoyed the harbor view while we ate. It was a unique way to fuel up for the day's adventures, and a reminder that travel is often about embracing the unexpected.
With our bellies full, we set off to find the Lofoten Waterfall near Sørvågen. The drive itself was a treat, winding through roads that hugged the coastline, offering glimpses of the sea between the colorful houses.
The hike to the waterfall was fairly easy, a gentle climb through moss-covered rocks and vibrant foliage. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth. As we got closer, the sound of the waterfall grew louder, a constant, soothing roar that promised a spectacle. And it delivered.
The Lofoten Waterfall wasn't the tallest or most dramatic waterfall I've ever seen, but it possessed a unique charm. It cascaded down a series of rocky tiers, creating a mesmerizing display of water and light. The surrounding landscape, with its rugged cliffs and verdant vegetation, added to the waterfall's allure. I spent a good while simply watching the water, feeling a sense of calm wash over me. Élodie, of course, was busy snapping photos, trying to capture the waterfall's beauty from every possible angle. I have to admit, she has a great eye for photography; I’m always impressed with what she captures.

Sometimes, the most beautiful things are the ones that whisper, not shout.
After the waterfall, we decided to explore Selfjorden, a fjord known for its tranquil waters and stunning mountain views. The drive to Selfjorden was breathtaking, with panoramic views of the fjord and the surrounding peaks. We stopped at a few viewpoints along the way, each offering a different perspective of the landscape. The autumn colors were in full swing, painting the hillsides in shades of red, orange, and gold. It was a sight to behold.

We found a quiet spot by the fjord and simply sat there, soaking in the scenery. The water was so still, it mirrored the mountains perfectly, creating a surreal and dreamlike effect. I closed my eyes and listened to the gentle lapping of the water against the shore, feeling a deep connection to nature. It was a moment of pure serenity, a reminder of the simple joys in life.
For lunch, we stopped at Klatrekaféen in Henningsvær. It's apparently an iconic café known as a gathering spot for climbers, artists, and adventurers. The atmosphere was definitely unique, a blend of rustic charm and bohemian vibes. The walls were adorned with climbing gear and artwork, and the air was filled with the aroma of coffee and freshly baked goods. Élodie and I shared a shrimp sandwich and a steak platter. We enjoyed our meal while listening to the chatter of fellow travelers, feeling a sense of camaraderie and shared adventure.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Restaurant Gammelbua in Reine for dinner. This restaurant is housed in a historic 18th-century building, which added to its charm. The interior was cozy and inviting, with a fireplace that created a warm and welcoming atmosphere. We feasted on local specialties, including stockfish and fresh seafood. Élodie, ever the pastry chef, was particularly impressed with the restaurant's dessert selection. It was the perfect ending to a day of culinary exploration.

Before heading back to our cabin, we decided to check out SKJENKERIET LOFOTEN AS in Leknes for a nightcap. It was a cozy bar with a great selection of local beers and spirits. We chatted with some locals and other tourists, sharing stories and laughter. It was a fun and relaxed atmosphere, a perfect way to wind down after a day of exploring.

Tomorrow, we're planning to visit Lofotruna and Molneva Waterfall. I'm excited to see what other hidden gems Lofoten has in store for us. For now, though, I'm content to savor the memories of today, the gentle moments that made it so special. I am also very excited to try Restaurant Nyvågar for breakfast, Gadus for lunch and Nordis Restaurant Svolvær for dinner. And maybe do some shopping at Rigg Lofoten.
It’s days like these that remind me why I love to travel. It's not just about seeing new places, but about experiencing new things, connecting with people, and discovering the beauty that exists in the everyday. And as I drift off to sleep tonight, I'm grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with Élodie, my partner in life and adventure.
It is interesting to see that there are several events going on in Lofoten right now. There is the Lofoten International Chamber Music Festival. Also, there are Halloween parties coming up soon. I will have to look into this more!
