Solo Adventure to Askja Caldera: A Journey into Iceland's Wild Heart
Day 1: Icelandic Arrival: First Day in Askja's Mystical Embrace
Embark on my solo adventure to Askja Caldera, Iceland, where I explore local flavors and gear up for the untamed wilderness.
Touchdown in Askja: Day One
The journey to Askja Caldera has begun, and the initial taste of Iceland is already intoxicating! After months of anticipation, I've finally arrived, ready to immerse myself in the raw, untamed beauty of this volcanic wonderland. Today was all about settling in, savoring local cuisine, and preparing for the adventures that lie ahead.
The flight from Hamburg to Reykjavik was smooth, and the subsequent domestic flight brought me closer to the heart of Iceland's wilderness. The landscape transformed dramatically as we approached, trading cityscapes for vast lava fields and distant, snow-capped mountains. Even from the air, I could sense the powerful forces that have shaped this land.
After landing, the real adventure began: the drive to Askja. The 4x4 handled the rugged terrain with aplomb, and I found myself mesmerized by the stark beauty of the Icelandic Highlands. The roads, though challenging, offered panoramic views that stretched to the horizon. It was a stark reminder of how remote and untouched this part of the world truly is.
The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, and mine began with the crunch of gravel under my hiking boots in the otherworldly landscapes of Askja.
My first stop was Grána Bistro for a hearty Icelandic breakfast. I opted for the traditional skyr with fresh berries and a sprinkle of granola. The creamy, tangy skyr was the perfect way to kickstart my day, providing a delicious and nutritious boost for the adventures ahead. The bistro itself was charming, with rustic wooden décor and large windows offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape. It was the perfect spot to gather my thoughts and prepare for the day's explorations.

Next on the agenda was lunch at Vogafjós Farm Resort, a place I had been eagerly anticipating. This unique restaurant offers a true farm-to-table experience, with many of the ingredients sourced directly from the surrounding farm. I savored a delicious lamb dish, cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor. What made the experience even more special was the opportunity to see the cows being milked through the restaurant's viewing windows. It was a fascinating glimpse into the sustainable practices of Icelandic farming.

After lunch, I made a detour to UNA Local Product / Sveitabúðin Una, a charming shop in Hvolsvöllur. I wanted to pick up a few last-minute essentials and some locally made souvenirs. The shop was a treasure trove of Icelandic crafts, from hand-knitted sweaters to unique jewelry and artwork. I purchased a beautiful hand-carved wooden bird, a perfect reminder of my time in Iceland. I also grabbed a couple of extra memory cards for my camera, heeding the silent reminder that I needed to be prepared for anything.

As evening approached, I made my way to Kjarr Restaurant for dinner. This cozy restaurant is known for its innovative cuisine and warm, inviting atmosphere. I indulged in a delicious seafood pasta, made with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. The flavors were exquisite, and the presentation was impeccable. It was the perfect way to end a long day of travel and exploration.

Before settling in for the night, I took a moment to reflect on the day's experiences. The vastness of the landscape, the unique flavors of Icelandic cuisine, and the warmth of the local people had already left a lasting impression. I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore this incredible part of the world.
As I prepare for tomorrow's hike on the Askja trail and a visit to Lake Askja, I can't help but feel a surge of excitement. The anticipation of witnessing the caldera's otherworldly beauty is almost overwhelming. I plan to start the day with breakfast at Kjarr Restaurant & Bar, fueling up for the day's adventures.
Tomorrow promises to be even more awe-inspiring as I delve deeper into the heart of Askja Caldera. I'm particularly excited about hiking the Askja trail and finally seeing Lake Askja with my own eyes. I've heard stories of its surreal beauty, and I can't wait to experience it firsthand. And perhaps, if the weather cooperates, I'll even take a dip in the geothermal waters of Víti crater – a truly unique and unforgettable experience.
Before drifting off to sleep, I double-checked my gear, ensuring I have everything I need for tomorrow's hike. I made a mental note to find a portable water filter, as I had forgotten to pack one. I also charged my camera batteries and cleared some space on my memory cards, eager to capture the stunning landscapes that await.
Reflecting on my urban beekeeping back in Hamburg, I realize how different this world is. Yet, both share a fundamental connection to nature. Just as I nurture the delicate ecosystem of my rooftop hives, I'm here to witness and respect the powerful forces that have shaped this volcanic landscape. It's a humbling reminder of the interconnectedness of all things.
As the midnight sun casts a soft glow across the horizon, I feel a sense of peace and anticipation. Askja Caldera, I'm ready for you. Tomorrow, I will delve deeper into your mysteries and discover the raw, untamed beauty that lies within. I am looking forward to Kaffi Lára El Grillo Bar tomorrow night after a long day of hiking.
Good night from Iceland!
