Chasing Views and Flavors in Freycinet
Today was all about embracing the wild beauty of Freycinet National Park and indulging in some delightful Tasmanian treats. It’s amazing how quickly you can fall in love with a place, and Freycinet has certainly captured our hearts. I'm especially grateful for these moments with David and Sophie, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Ice Creamery & Co. in Coles Bay. Despite the name suggesting otherwise, it's not *just* an ice cream parlor. It's a local gem that serves up delicious breakfast fare with a side of stunning scenery. I opted for a classic coffee, while David enjoyed a pot of tea, and Sophie couldn't resist a milkshake. The view of the Hazards mountain range rising above the bay was the perfect backdrop as we planned our day.

Fueled and ready, our first stop was the Coles Bay Lookout. The short drive was scenic in itself, winding through lush vegetation with glimpses of the turquoise waters. Arriving at the lookout, we were greeted with a panoramic vista that took our breath away. The entire bay stretched out before us, with the iconic Hazards providing a dramatic frame. Sophie was particularly excited, pointing out the different boats bobbing on the water and trying to spot any dolphins. I took a moment to capture the scene, knowing that no photo could truly do justice to the real thing.

Next on our itinerary was Bluestone Bay, a spot I'd been particularly eager to visit. Known for its unique shoreline covered in pale blue and pink boulders, it promised a landscape unlike any other. The drive there was a bit of an adventure, requiring a 4WD for the last stretch. Thankfully, our rental car was up to the task, though I did find myself silently wishing I hadn't forgotten the insect repellent back at the lodge as we bumped along the track. David expertly navigated the road, and Sophie squealed with delight at every bump and turn.

Reaching Bluestone Bay felt like stepping onto another planet. The smooth, colorful rocks were scattered across the beach, creating a surreal and beautiful scene. Sophie immediately started hopping from one rock to another, her laughter echoing across the bay. David and I explored the shoreline, marveling at the natural artistry on display. The bay offered beautiful views of the ocean and Freycinet National Park. The best time to visit is during the summer when the weather is warm and sunny.
The beauty of Freycinet lies not just in its grand vistas, but in the quiet moments of discovery found along its shores.
After our exploration of Bluestone Bay, lunchtime beckoned, and we headed to Lobster Shack Tasmania. While technically located in Bicheno, it was well worth the short drive for a taste of their famous seafood. The vibe was casual, and the food was simple but delicious. I opted for the lobster roll, a generous serving of sweet lobster meat with a hint of lemon. David chose the grilled salmon, and Sophie, of course, went for the fish and chips. The views from the deck overlooking the boat harbour were stunning, adding to the overall experience. We learned that the Lobster Shack opened in 2017 to give visitors the opportunity to enjoy fresh, local seafood.

With our bellies full, we decided to indulge in a little afternoon treat at Malting Lagoon Brewing. While David sampled a couple of their craft beers – he was particularly impressed with the Belgian Golden Ale – Sophie and I shared a refreshing juice. The brewery had a relaxed, friendly atmosphere, and we enjoyed chatting with some of the locals. It’s these kinds of experiences that truly make a trip memorable, connecting with the people and the place on a personal level.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way back to Freycinet Lodge, reflecting on all that we had seen and done. The sky was painted with hues of orange and pink as the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a magical glow over the landscape. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day.

Tomorrow, we're planning to visit the Freycinet Marine Farm and Bicheno Blowhole. I'm particularly excited about the Marine Farm, as I've heard their oysters are not to be missed. Plus, a little shopping at ISLANDER art home fashion is on the cards. It's hard to believe we're already on Day 5 of our adventure – time really does fly when you're having fun! But I am committed to making the most of every moment, soaking in the beauty of Tasmania and creating lasting memories with my family. I am also trying to be mindful of the events taking place in Coles Bay. I read that the Freycinet Challenge, a multi-sport event, occurs annually around this time. It's amazing to see the community come together for such an exciting competition.
Back at the lodge, as Sophie drifts off to sleep, David and I sit on our private deck, listening to the sounds of the bush. Wallabies graze peacefully nearby, seemingly undisturbed by our presence. It’s moments like these that remind me why we travel – to escape the everyday, to connect with nature, and to create memories that will last a lifetime. I am so grateful for this opportunity to share this experience with my family. As I sit here, I can't help but feel a sense of contentment and gratitude for this incredible journey. I am looking forward to more adventures tomorrow!
P.S. I must remember to buy more SD cards tomorrow. I almost ran out of space on my camera today!
